Now that I'm nearing my Enfeebling Merits cap, I was wondering what RDM specific merits I should endeavour on. My first thoughts were to do Convert and Ice (as tier 1), since I don't usually have any problems landing Gravity or Slow, however my Binds do tend to suck.

Also, for group two, would it be better to stick one in all of them or go with two in Bio, Para and Slow? I'm still very undecided on the course of action for this part of my merits, and this is the main reason I'm asking here.

I'm not a fan of HNMs etc, hence why I left out Phalanx 2, if anything I enjoy kicking back and soloing stuff on my RDM, however I do play it for Dynamis and stuff like ENMs. My gear is by no means leet, however it's reasonable, notable pieces missing would be Duelist's Chapeau and a Dalmatica, however I don't see the two coming my way in a long time.

Thanks for any replies.

what've read up on a long time ago

4/4 Wind and Ice acc

but due to the new merit 2 group may want to place 1 or 2 in earth(supposedly one doesnt make much noticeable difference)

Reach 1:1 convert ratio, kinda situational but only reason to go past it with gear and stuff is for devotion I guess

Bio III with rdm capped drk magic equals the DoT of a capped blm with drk magic skill.

seems remotely useless to me, others have recommended it for soloing

Dia III 30 secs a merit going to put 2 into that, but a greater difference since it's 15% def down effect

Paralyze, Slow, and Blind have the same effects as their tier I counterparts with only one merit. you need at least 2 merits into one to notice any big difference.

Para and Slow are really great I hear, blind as well but not as great as the former 2. I plan to test Blind II and see if it's worth it, I'm skipping Phalanx II since it's just extra def, which probrably wont help much.

All merited enfeebs will outdo a ninja's enfeeb as well

you have near merited cap on enfeebling for rdms people before update went what 6 in enfeeb and 2 into nuking?

info is a bit of a mix and old and new stuff i'm looking into, but I hope it's right

Congrats on the enfeebling merits. \(^_^)/

Regarding Tier I, I have fully merited Convert Recast Timer, which helps loads when we do Kirin or other longer battles like that, in Northland's Dynamis areas, and when I duo-merit with my irl husband.

IMO, Ice and Wind are the two most important for RDM. Ice for paralyze and bind; wind for gravity and silence.

Tier II is a tough decision. Wouldn't you like to merit all of it? Don't waste your merits on Paralyze II, though. Every RDM I know who has merited that says it is worthless because the accuracy is balls.

I think that Bio and/or Dia are worthless unless you're going to fully merit them. The 30 seconds you get initially is not going to help much; it would just be a huge MP drain to keep it up that way.

Phalanx II is good for me in Dynamis or other end game type stuff, especially when I'm in the tank party.

Really, what to merit boils down to is what you spend a lot of time doing in game. Merit whatever will make your gaming experience easier.

There was a thread a month or two ago dealing with RDM merits. Here is a link to that thread.

I agree with 4/4/2 Wind/Ice/Earth, but most RDMs I know went 5/5 Wind/Ice before the second category was released and never looked back. They're comfortable landing Slow(II) without any accuracy increase besides perhaps an Elemental Staff. I really like to stack as much MND as possible on Slow II, riding the accuracy tiers, due to the different calculations of self v. mob stat that the new spells use. I'll get to this in a moment.

As for the second category, there's a few ways to go about this, and it is dictated by your play style. I know you really like to solo mobs, and so two each in Bio/Slow/Para may be the way to go.

Consider that by any account, Slow (and Elegy, and Haste) are incredibly powerful in terms of reducing damage dealt to whoever is tanking, and Paralyze takes off a full attack round only when it takes effect. Slow(II) is always in effect.

There have been a number of tests done to figure out how the second tier of RDM enfeebles change effect caps, and the influence of MND and INT. It seems that not only do they raise the possible %effect (for Slow, attack speed decrease and for Paralyze, rounds effect processes) but also allow you to get similar results in terms of %effect as the first-tier spells with a lower self v. mob MND result. (Though this is more important for HNM, which you said you don't worry about.)

I went for:
Earth Magic Accuracy +6
Ice Magic Accuracy +12
Wind Magic Accuracy +12
Slow II level 3 (consider that this provides about +6 m.acc)
Paralyze II level 2 (providing about +4 m.acc)
Phalanx II level 1

I think that Bio and/or Dia are worthless unless you're going to fully merit them. The 30 seconds you get initially is not going to help much; it would just be a huge MP drain to keep it up that way.

I don't solo enough to make Bio III worthwhile, but if I did it would be a hard decision to trade off. That last merit level increases the spell by half again as much duration, whereas the third level of SlowII/ParaII is not a clear 33% increase. ApplePie reports that Bio III is great for the massive attack-down-effect even over and above the DoT. For soloing, that's a must. I might advise you to fully merit Bio III.

Paralyze, Slow, and Blind have the same effects as their tier I counterparts with only one merit. you need at least 2 merits into one to notice any big difference.

This is not correct. Even the first level of II enfeebles are far better than the original spells, as you can see here with Slow v. Slow II:

It should be clear that getting Slow II and Paralyze II to at least one level merited is very important.

Tier II is a tough decision. Wouldn't you like to merit all of it? Don't waste your merits on Paralyze II, though. Every RDM I know who has merited that says it is worthless because the accuracy is balls.

I've had Paralyze II land and then not have any effect, and I've had it hit for five of ten rounds on Suzaku. Better to at least have the first level of tier-II, in my opinion and experience, because you know that it has better innate accuracy and possible effect, and a better self v. mob MND calculation.

convert 5/5 wind 5/5
Bio III 2/3
Para II 1/3
Phalnax 3/3
Enfeebling 8/8
Elemental 8/8
I highly recommend leaving out some of the elemental merits for convert. It makes a significant difference having an 8:20 convert timer especially in parties or even when things get tough in sea, sky, etc. I have wind completely merited and even with int gear I have a difficult time sticking gravity on foes such as Kirin, Faith, etc. and having it last. Even if you're not doing HNM's seeing PLDs take 0 damage on IT mobs or seeing a significant difference when they are facing Gods is fun to watch when you have phalnax merited completely. I'm happy with everything I've done with my merits.

You broke the board! I had to quote you in a reply to read it all. LOL

BTW, you are the first person I've heard say that Paralyze II was worth a damn. Did you have your Ice Accuracy merited before you did Paralyze II? I'm curious as to why yours is successful where many others are not.

LOL Who have you been talking to? Paralyze II was the single best investment. In fact it lands on Gods regularly. And Procs far more often then regular Paralyze. So who ever told you that needs to do a little more research before bashing. I agree with Bio III being worthless, Dia III however is very useful. primarily in Merit parties since mobs usually are only alive for 45 sec anyways. and yes, it does help quite a bit lol. Only 2/3 on Slow II and its very effective, Far better then Slow I. I should also probably note I have a Duelist's Chapeau, which made a huge diffrence. Enfeebling is not capped, nor will I ever. it is split between Elemental and Enfeebling. 8/8 went to Blue Magic, mainly because Magus Jubbah is only current piece that adds skills. Tier one I am focusing on Wind and Ice Acc I do have 1 Earth Acc as wel. I am not bothering with Convert. Honestly if I am running outta mp before Convert is up, I am obviously using too much MP, especially being a Taru it is such a rare occasion it be a waste for me. Galka / Elvanns i can see this being useful however.

Wind and ice. Convert Timer is nice, but i've never been in a spot where I needed to wait on convert. I have 961mp /blm and 1004 /smn so that helps to have enough mp starting out with.

Tested para2, and para1 has always worked better with lower mp cost.

casted para2(lvl2) - mob is paralyzed maybe 1-2 times during fight.
casted para1 - mob is paralyzed 5+ times before it wears off or dies.
Even ice spikes did better >.>.

Slow2 is awesome and the best t2 merit spell for rdm. Phala2 is nice for dynamis. bio3 is nice if you solo. The other spells are meh.

I can remember hearing this from at least 3 different RDMs, all of whom had the spell merited. (IDK what level, but they had it.) Also, a few ppl said the same thing in that thread I quoted in my first post.

I'm trying to figure out what you all are doing that makes it work when it wouldn't work for others.

idk I have 3/3 in Paralyze II and I like it better then Tier I Paralyze. I never seem to have an issue with it proc. on a mob. There is the rare occasion where it shows on them and maybe only proc. once but like I said rare. I also have 3/5 Ice Accuracy merited though too so not sure if this is why I don't have many problems with it.

I do not have maxed enfeebling and like Nifal probably never will (only have 4 in it and will most likely stay here) I have a lot of the enfeeblinig gear to compensate for the lack of 4 other merits. Duelist's Chapeau, AF+1 Tabard, Altruistic Cape, Torque (of course) Nashira Serawheels. I don't always wear the above together though normally opting for more MND and INT with the Mahatma Slops.

I am Elvaan and have never considered meriting Convert. To me it seems like wasted merits when Ice Accuracy and Wind Accuracy are more beneficial. I do not have the MP pool like a Taru but still fair well with gear in MP to not have to worry about when my convert timer is up. Normally a few resting ticks with Errant Body and Duelist Belt is enough to keep me satisfied if I am absolutely running lower then normal on MP.

I still need to finish Merits in the 1st Category though but intend to do:
5 Wind Accuracy
4 Ice accuracy
1 Earth (just because I added it before I decided on 5-5 in Ice and Wind and never changed it)

2nd Category I have:
3/3 Paralyze II
2 Slow II
1 in Phalanx II just to help a bit when in tank party.

Blab, you've probably seen them already, but there's a few good threads on BG in the newbie section on rdm merits.

For all those people that don't like Paralyze 2, what gear are you casting in and what level merits? I still see plenty of rdms only casting para and slow in full enfeebling skill gear, not in mnd gear, so that may be why they're not seeing paralyze go off often. If you're putting one merit into Paralyze 2 and only casting in AF body or something, don't be surprised when it sucks.

I did 5 wind, 3 convert, 2 ice for tier 1. My reasoning was that if you miss silence or gravity, there's quite a good chance that mob is going to come bite you in the ass. I knocked an even minute off Convert because getting 1k MP back that much sooner is always a good thing. The last two went into ice for blizzard 3, bind, and (to a lesser extent) paralyze. If you do a lot of solo/small man stuff more ice accuracy would be better, I think. Gravity resistance can be built up, but bind supposedly doesn't.

Tier 2, I did 3 slow, 3 phalanx. Phalanx is awesome for Salvage, and good for Dynamis, regular Limbus zones, anything you pld/war tank. Slow 2 is just awesomesauce, 'nuff said. The other three spells I've never tried and don't have much experience with. Paralyze 2 supposedly really shines against some NM's (especially when you're /drk and do absorb-mnd), Blind is lol, Bio 3 is kind of a let down since a blm can DoT just as well. I've had a couple melee friends bug me to get Dia 3 for merit parties, but IMO that's really not worth dropping slow or phalanx merits. Whatever you do for tier 2, I'd probably go all out and cap that spell, only one upgrade into slow/para/phalanx is a waste of merits to me. It won't be nearly as effective as it could be and you're better off letting someone else with level 3 cast that spell instead.

(Hopefully all that made sense, kind of half-asleep right now)

Paralyze II is better, and more accurate, then Paralyze I.

Personally, I think it depends on what you do. If you do Salvage, then I'd highly reccomend meriting Phalanx II + Slow II. Paralyze II helps a lot on the first 2 floors, considering mobs hit for roughly 30 a hit, thus making them hit for 0-10.

Slow II is quite honestly the best of our merit spells. Paralyze II, however, is good as well. But due to the randomness that is Paralyze, Slow II is better. I have noticed Paralyze II being better then Slow though, so I'd still recommend meriting it. Like Calais said, it is usefull for bosses. It really shines on MNK mobs and fast hitting mobs, such as Dekka and the other imp NM in Salvage. Once you've seen it proc 10 times in a row and every 2-5 attack rounds on a mob that hits with 180 delay, you'll learn to love it :p

As for tier 1 merits, I never bothered with them. I think they're pretty useless compared to tier 2 merits, and merits for other jobs.

Paralyze II is gay until you dump more merits into it. Paralyze and lots of +MND gear means tons of accuracy.

Personally, I'm doing this:

8 Enfeebling (8 Elemental for Black Mage)
4 Wind
4 Ice
2 Earth
All Group 2.

I'm a sucker for having every spell, which is why I'm getting every spell in Group 2. The only ones I'm missing are Bio III and Blind II. Phalanx II is great with capped Enhancing and +skill gear (Warlock's Tights, Enhancing Torque, Duelist's Gloves), and for hard-hitting HNMs like Kirin, Fafhogg, Grand Wyrms, etc, it's a lifesaver for a tank.

Slow II has a great slowed effect, but accuracy is hit-and-miss sometimes. Dia III is nice for merit parties (sometimes), or mobs that you know you can time it's effect, like Fafhogg. My suggestion would be to just fill out merits that suit your play style.

You broke the board! I had to quote you in a reply to read it all. LOL

BTW, you are the first person I've heard say that Paralyze II was worth a damn. Did you have your Ice Accuracy merited before you did Paralyze II? I'm curious as to why yours is successful where many others are not.

I'll be the second. I found both Para II and Slow II to be a lot more accurate than Para and Slow, although I have a fair bit of accuracy gear to go along with them. I still slightly prefer Slow II because of it's consistent effect on high level mobs, and because it has fixed duration, but Para II is pretty strong. (I had 1 merit in Ice and 1 in Earth when I first got the spells).

That graph gives a good indication of the effects of Slow II at various levels of meriting but it isn't completely accurate (eg, Slow II with 2 merits actually caps at 36% not 33%)

Honestly, choose merits for what you plan to do with RDM.
A HNM RDM is likely to want Slow II, Dia III, Para II (and maybe Blind II)
A Soloing RDM will find Wind accuracy (Silence/Gravity) Ice Accuracy (Bind, Blizzard III) and Bio III (our highest DoT spell) to be pretty important.
An event RDM may want to put more effort into Phalanx II.

None of the merits radically change our role. Choose merits that compliment what you find yourself doing most of your time. One thing to remember is that some Spells are only practical with multiple metrits. Dia III and Bio III, for example only last 30 sec with 1 merit making them impractical for DoT kiting or HNMing unless you put multiples in (although for merits, 30sec may well be enough...)

My point is w/e gear im in para1 and ice spikes proc more often than para2 (Low lvl mobs to gods/hnm). If I cast para1 naked and it procs more often than para2 in full w/e gear, i'll stick with para1.

Also van having all the spells is cool, but the spells are pretty weak at lvl1.

Ice spikes is a lot stronger than Para 1 or 2.

The actual strength of Paralyse is hard to measure, due to it's variability, particularly on high level mobs. It may seem sometimes that Para 1 is stronger, but that's not the case.

Paralyse II is not only stronger than Para I, but importantly is more accurate as well, and there are mobs I had a lot of trouble getting Para on that Para II hits a lot more often (mobs that typically have 20-80% accuracy rates).

I do still like Slow II better because of the fixed duration and the fixed effect, but I've been really impressed with Para II since I got it, particularly on HNMs and in Dynamis-Xarca.

I know all of what your saying, I am only saying for me it was a waste of merit points. I don't have a prob with mag acc so the higher mp cost and lower proc (for me) I stick to para1.

Also van having all the spells is cool, but the spells are pretty weak at lvl1.
Yea I know, but that's not going to stop me from getting all the Group 2's on Black Mage also, even though I'll probably never use Quake II. It's just a personal quirk. I have all the bar-spells for Red Mage, but I can't tell you the last time I used Barvirus or Barpetrify.

Another thing to keep in mind that every Red Mage plays the job differently. Not every Red Mage has a full set of HQ staves, or a Duelist's Chapeau, or even an Enfeebling Torque. I know personally I didn't have a full set of staves until 70, AFTER I beat Maat. But I did have an Enfeebling Torque since it was given to me by my then linkshell since I was their *cough*premierredmage*cough*.

On Paralyze/Paralyze II: There has been times where I'd land Paralyze II on Fafhogg, but it would never proc. At that time I also had no Ice Accuracy merits though. I haven't fought Fafhogg again since I added the two that I have at the moment, so I'd have to fight Fafhogg again to see if there's a difference.

Sorry Linh, I'm sure one of those rdms was me, but I didnt mean that the spell sucked. When I had paralyze II, I only had 2 merits in it, and at that level I felt like its accuracy was marginally better than paralyze I, at a much higher mp cost, with a very erratic and sometime worse proc rate. I'm sure a 3rd merit in para II would make it a lot better. I took my merits out of para II to max phalanx II, which I get quite a bit of use out of.

Also have slow II fully meritted as well as 3 ice/4 wind/3 earth acc. Like Courtney said, slow II is a garaunteed effect %, which is pretty damn useful on anything that is hard to kill.

But, as far as tier 2 spells, ideally you would consult with other rdms in your linkshell in order to cover different spells, otherwise just merit what you'd get the most use out of. I probably would have finished off para 2 instead of switching to phalanx if another rdm in our dynamis shell had had phalanx II at the time.
