I was wondering about subjobs. I was, at one point, given a list of subjobs to have but I want to ask here if they're really viable options for the job.

I have /WHM, /BLM and /NIN already at 37 (two are 75 so it would kind of be hard to not have them as a subjob), and I'm working on /DRK presently, but I was more wondering about /BLU and /SCH.

Are those two jobs useful as subs? I don't really think at this point I want to get into trying to tank as a RDM, but I'd like to be useful outside of just merit parties and Dynamis.

Thanks for any information you can send my way! ^^

/blu is a good subjob if you are up near the monsters to spam stun moves. /drk is also use as a stun gun. I have also seen /smn used for the monsters that warp around.

/PUP!!! <_<;

For most situations, /WHM and /BLM. /DRK is situational, but pretty important. Even though you have /NIN, I don't think you'd use it often with how you've said you wanna play (I have it and don't use it outside of campaign because I'm pretty happy with just being a support role RDM).

As far as /SCH goes, I don't have it yet so I can't give you any practical applications for it other than what I've seen Foosk do, and I'm sure you've already talked to him about it.

Most of the time, I'm /WHM for linkshell events. Sometimes /DRK and sometimes /BLM. It largely depends on what you want to do with your RDM and what other jobs are attending said event.

One of the great things about RDM is you can be useful no matter what, even if you had no sub.

I mainly use /WHM. Alot of thing you do will be you being /WHM.

In sky, if it's gods or Kirin I'm /DRK (we use CS Stun for Suzy). If it's farming, I use /BLM for escape.

Of course when I'm soloing, I use /NIN. It's not a must SJ to have if you are just going to be a support RDM.

I do not have /BLU yet, but I heard it's good for tanking, stunning, and soloing.

/SMN has its uses, like Keryan said if the mob warps around it can be useful.

Don't have /SCH yet either, but I can see it's uses.

So pretty much I'm saying, WHM BLM DRK are must-haves. SMN BLU and SCH are nice to have, but not needed.

Oh and don't forgot /PUP is a must-have too!

/brd not bad sub either for mana burns. sch not so much since it don't stack with refresh. Blu just presently lvl this myself but yet to had a chance to use it heard it is nice if soloing mnks. /drk the way to go. When you not erasing people or sleeping 10 mobs or so.

<_<; Why not? LOL

Agreed. Going a step further, I'd go WHM > BLM > DRK > SCH > NIN > BLU > SMN, and, as I understand what you're trying to do with your RDM, you can probably just stop at /DRK or /SCH.

NO, no, I have talked to him about it. A lot. At great length. I just wanted other opinions just because.... well idk, just because.

Cause you are a weirdo.

But yeah, I agree with the order Linh put.

going disagree a bit here ans say list should go like this
whm>blm>drk>nin>sch>brd>blu>pld>smn

Reason rank sch so low is it gives no advance over whm or blm except casting spells faster and since we are already the master of the fast cast not that much of a advancement and mp cost down not big problem for rdm either. It does however give you access to regen 2 at 75 which whm does not.

/SCH grants B rank Dark and Elemental skills, which is pretty nice in my opinion (B rank Divine too, but no Rdm cares about that unless they're OC and just has to see everything blue). I go /DRK to some ZNMs if they don't resist stun/just to weapon bash for the hell of it, and to some gods if it's called on. Personally I'd rate /BRD below /SCH /NIN and even /BLU, I solo more often than I've seen a manaburn. Heck, you could probably /BLU on birds if you wanted, Healing breeze and Wild Carrot are pretty mp efficient compared to Curagas/Cure III. Not like you desperately need Divine Veil/-na spells there anyway.

True not many mana burns these days. Also very nice sub to get point a to b with muzuka. Use it when go mine in mount z a lot. raptor+wlegs+sprinterboots=fast kitty

If Morwen really wanted to manaburn, I'm sure she'd go on BLM and be more effective than RDM/BRD or RDM/anything for that matter. I don't think that SCH, BRD, BLU, PLD, or SMN are must have subs at all; they're very situational at best.

The reason I don't consider SCH a must have sub is because it isn't MP efficient for RDM, IMO, at least not to the degree it is for, like, WHM main. Sublimation doesn't stack with refresh and you cast a mixture of light and dark spells, so you don't get a huge benefit from light or dark arts (casting time, recast time, and MP cost).

Stratagems and -10% cost (depending on which Art you use) aren't MP efficient?

My rdm isn't 75, although i'm considering leveling it soon, but SCH seems like an excellent sub for alot of events. Refresh is still more effective than sublimation but that's only 1 aspect of /sch. The light/dark arts casting time and mp reduction are both useful, one of the main reasons i hear against mage/SCH is the lack of SS/Blink, but RDM gets both naturally.

/Sch isn't as mp efficient for RDM as it is for WHM, but it is still pretty mp efficient depending on what you need to do. You could take the mp cost increase for some black magic spells like Gravity/Blind/Dispel while in light arts and switch to black arts for nukes. Granted doing this you probably wouldn't want to nuke more than once a minute but nuking that fast burns through your mp anyway. The major drawback to /SCH from /Whm is the loss of Erase, Divine Seal (I typically burn this during convert so you could substitute a stratagem to get around that) Curagas and Viruna If I recall correctly. I'd probably use /Sch more when I finish it.

If on RDM I was just casting white magic or just casting black magic, then yes, it would be spectacularly awesome. However, I cast white and black magic regularly. You have a 1 minute recast timer for Light and Dark Arts, and you get gimped casting white magic with Dark Arts up and vice versa. I can't switch back and forth nearly as much as I'd need to for it to be super effective.

I am not speaking from experience here as I don't have it at 37 yet, and I plan to test it out, but I don't see using /SCH more than /WHM, /BLM, or even /DRK. For /BLM, I generally use that in situations where I need sleepga, which I wouldn't have /SCH. For /WHM, I use erase, barspells, curagas, and -na's. /SCH, I wouldn't have barspells, curagas, erase or viruna. /DRK for stun, which /SCH doesn't have. I mean, if I needed to do a lot of nuking, /SCH would be great, however, I have 75BLM, and BLM > RDM/anything for nuking.

I also don't think much of SCH as a sub for RDM. You lose sleepga, so dynamis, limbus, are out for using that sub, and the only thing you really gain is Regen II. Sublimation and Refresh don't mix, and Arts are going to save 250ish mp every 10 minutes if you heal and nuke with them. Less if you don't. Not terribly great at the maximum possible return. You'd almost be better off /BLM for the same Conserve MP trait, but an extra Clear Mind for if/when you rest.
You don't really get any of the cool Scholar stuff, and like we've all said, no terrible benefit to Sublimation as a RDM main.

As far as necessary subs go, I'd list in the following order:
WHM, BLM, DRK, NIN

DRK I consider necessary for Stungun. There's a few things where it greatly helps the event, and there's no other one job that can produce the same effects.

NIN for kiting several mobs, or something that's gravity/bind immune/resistant. It's also the de facto soloing sub, and you could cap melee skills with it.

BLU would be nice for soloing 3+ mobs, or mobs that would otherwise strip shadows really fast. Would have to really keep an eye on MP consumption though IMO. The super situational sub.

I honestly can't see a use for much else. /SMN if you're fighting something that warps around, you're gonna be wasting far more mp than you gain. I suppose it would be nice for mp, but you lose Divine Seal or Sleepga or Stun or Utsusemi. Not worth it to me.

Clear Mind doesn't stack. Also /Sch Strategems makes it more mp efficient over /Blm, it's the loss of E Seal and Sleepga (for Dynamis mostly) that hurts.
