First of all i know i am doing a little bit of this...

026.gif

but this... lately is bullshit 12/16 of the visible threads on the flameboard locked for little to no reason.

And unless you guys allow more of this to go on....

We may end up with more of this

It seems as if you guys feel that you have to lock the threads when the flame is "over" but if the flame were in fact over wouldnt people just stop posting and the flame would die of ... old age?

flame2.jpg

Look at this page from how flames used to die in the past... 1 thread locked and because it was a necro of over a year. (not to mention that beyond that the thread was technically a personal threat)

Why cant the moderators just keep their damn hands off the buttons and let the board live... that is really all i want for Christmas.

Because people didn't use to crap all over the threads and would just let it die, instead of continuing on with PC+1's the entire time, multiple derails, personal attacks, RL threats, etc.
Before things degenerated further, and people got themselves into trouble, that it would be in everyone's best interest (site included) if the thread was locked. In other words, because the mods decided it should be locked.
Plus, if the flame has run its course, and would die anyway, what problem do you have if it's locked or not?

And flames were more intelligent in the past than they are now.. do you remember.. cowlba, pandetech, peregrine or any of the people who used to post on here before they were banned for various reasons.

I dont get to check the flameboard everyday and 3 times recently threads have been locked before i even get to read them let alone decide if i had anything of value to add to the conversation.

PC +1 is not a recent invention

lol? What flameboard did you visit in the past?

Fully agree with Deja. Sometimes its better to jsut leave things alone.

Flameboard guidelines are anti-PC+1 now, so they get deleted. If a thread becomes little more than PC+1, we'll just lock the thread. If the issue gets resolved, we'll lock the thread. If a thread is necroed we'll lock the thread.

Sometimes it is better to leave things alone, but if other users can't leave it alone, i'll be stepping in and locking the thread.

Bullshit. People have always crapped on threads and will continue to. That includes the site's "good people"...Everyone. Everyone has crapped on a thread before, and everyone will at some point in the future. That fact is why a little less moderation would be nice. Maybe it would seem the solution should be to overmoderate and "clean up" the site, but then near nothing's allowed, mods have to be way too involved just to keep up and appear consistant, people whine over loopholes and nobody is ultimately happy. Not to mention this place grows boring as fuck!
Mods generally do a good job of things around here, but have needed to chill a bit for sure. Since it's been brought up, put me down as a proponent of less modding.

Do you agree that all of these locks were justified?

Boy, when you DO have time to check the FB you really go out of your way to make projects for yourself. I don't have to explain shit anymore, but thanks for bringing me up again. Looks like you're the only one that cares enough to really bring this up. Christmas is over this year so put it on the list for next year.

So it seems to me you are more upset over the short amount of time most threads are actively going. If a thread is resolved, what's the point in it continuing? If a thread turns in to nothing but PC+1, what's the point in it continuing?

To answer your question though, probably not. I read far too many threads a day to keep track of individual ones from weeks/months ago.

The fact that the threads are only open for a limited time is only part of the problem for me i was just pointing out how exceedingly short most of the threads are currently being left open. What happened to threads only being locked for a few reasons.

1. Necro (normally over 2 months)
2. OP and person he flamed agree that the thread is resolved and it gets locked when both of them ask for it to be.
3. Sockpuppet...

Those used to be the only ways to get a thread locked. If people didnt want PC+1 they would stop posting them or if one person in particular PC+1s too often u can restrict their flameboard access or (omg personal responsibility) people can add them on thier own to their ignore list. That is how i dealt with all of the people that i listed earlier and how i currently deal with people who post ignorant crap constantly.

Why do you feel that it is your job to manage the flameboard when it is supposed to be the one forum that "anything goes"...

Short answer: The staff didn't like the path the flameboard was taking and liked some of the constructive criticism we received. So we talked over a lot of things and decided the best course of action to get things back on track was the amend the FB guidelines.

Essentially what we have done is just added another reason that we lock threads, being PC+1.

how about this... go through and unlock every thread except for the necro and lets see if the flames were ready to die / resolved or not

Honestly I somewhat agree with Dejavu's POV here, even though I really don't frequent the FB at all. Its just supplementary reading material here and there for me. However, the FB moderation that is happening now, almost makes it pointless to even have a FB at all.

How about not, and from now on we'll have a little less moderation as far as locking goes.

I think what Dejavu is saying he doesn't want more Sculli.

who gives a fuck? what dose anyone stand to gain from a FB topic? you think any defendant is going to come in and say "oh im sorry, i wont do it again /sulk" If someone or some group has a problem with another person, confront them in person. dont be a bitch about it and try and gather public support.

i think people forget that the admins and mods run/own this site and can do whatever they want with it, if you dont like it piss off.. find another forum. I remember once such time with the qcdn spin-off site, but that wont happen again cuz there wont be as many users to cry moar too. No one owns anything or holds any merit in this site unless they have a light/dark blue username.

I don't think anyone wants that. Especially the people on staff right now.

I don't think anyone really did.

I also think people that are still making sculli connections are 100% retarded seeing as no one is getting or has been getting coddled. I guess since people can't or never were able to see behind the scenes they just assume their asses away.

Just because PC+1s get deleted and threads on the FB get locked while you can still remember what the thread is about doesn't mean anyone wants things peaches and cream. Forget all the extra decorations the site received as a bi-product of a gay administrator, and you'll see not much as changed. For as often as people get in trouble for flamebaiting, there's also a lot of baiting that is overlooked. If the mods really wanted to be "sculli" oh trust me, the impression could get a LOT better.

But hey, since there's nothing to bitch about, lets just do all this. (again.)

While I must admit that I agree, some of these were killed much too quickly, I understand closing something that has become a PC+1 dump. When that happens, I agree that the mods shouldn't have to exert themselves to constantly trimming out those posts.

Think of PC+1s as Society's way of saying "we're done with this thread". I'm sure that's the Mod's point of view, and I agree. It's not worth the effort to delete 2-3 posts every 4-6 hours.

If I could offer what I think a good solution is: if PC+1 aren't an issue (given a reasonable numerical value.. maybe up to 5 within 4hr span), then never lock a flame unless it violates some other rule (such as necroing a post with... idk... a two week span between any two posts). The idea for the PC+1 comes from the local Driving laws regaring points on your license, which is 12 points in a year, or 18 points in 2 years to lose your license.

I also like the idea of perhaps "citing" PC+1ers and temp revoking Flameboard access for chronic PC+1ers. Eventually you'll get rid of all the "PC+1 Tools", to expand on Miros's unusual use of Tim the Toolman.

Otherwise, Deja, I can only say this: restart flames locked before their due. Just be smart about how you do it, such as flaming the point of view you didn't like as a separate flame. We can double or triple the amount of flames if everyone did that.

That is what I always think when I see someone complain about the modmins or the site in general.

I can see how you can get the impression that some flames are closed too early, however I don't think they are. When someone "wins" the thread, pretty much all that follows are PC +1's. I also think that if a flame hasn't been posted on for about 2-3 weeks, it shouldn't be posted on anymore because it has obviously died out.
