Its not the reputation system that is a problem, its some of the members of this forum. And its those members of the forum, that administrators and moderators need to do something about.
I agree with many, many sentiments expressed in this thread, but this one more than any others. If a member of my linkshell were to grief my other linkshell members, I would remove that individual from the shell. Rules should not be created or modified to accomodate problem children.
The way I see it, the whole reason we're discussing this is because the site moderation staff is looking for the best way to protect members. I don't think that removing the rep system is the ideal solution; there are plenty of other avenues those aforementioned problem children can utilize to grief members. The best solution IMO is to use a progressive discipline process ultimately leading to the removal of repeat offenders. This is a process we already have in place - lets make more use of it.
I understand it is completely impossible for mods to see everything that goes on. You guys (and gals) deserve to have lives outside of QCDN. It is our responsibility as users to call your attention to problem posts, PMs, VMs, and rate ups/downs. If you don't know its a problem, how can you be expected to fix it? We have a reporting system already in place - lets make more use of it.
