Requiem for a Flameboard

Well...I don't know if anyone has posted this yet, forgive me if someone has but ---> <--- Please check it if you wanted the FB to stay. Quite new yet, and work still being done on it, but hopefully we'll see a large wave of ppl pour into it sometime soon.

[Edit:
Having been there myself, I can appreciate the initiative, and the enthusiasm to start up one's own project. However, while I wish you guys the best of luck, I won't allow advertising for a directly competing site on QCDN (which should not be a surprise).

Edit that, Ex - rules say talking about competing websites is a no-no.

On that note, should we only link to Somepage/Mysterytour, seeing that KI and Alla both have Quetzalcoatl-related boards, falling under the competition statute? Or do they only count if they're user-owned?

The problem is I, and many others we've seen in this thread, consider it personally insulting that you prefer to treat the QCDN community - a community of mostly adults - like children.

I don't think asking people to show courtesy and respect is treating anyone like children.

I do it all the time when I'm at work. Customers come in with their requests to include baked bean suppers in the newspaper or wanting to order reprints of photos we can't sell because they're taken by the Associated Press or they call to complain the carrier missed their house. Not once in my five years working at a daily, as entertaining as stress-relieving as it might be to do so, have I ever told one of them to take a long walk off a short dock or just plain ol' told them to kiss my ass. It's called being a professional; we all know how to put up that front, even if it feels fake.

I commented earlier that the FB was often too Jerry Springer for my tastes, and it's true. Springer is a fun show to watch... the first few times. Then you realize how degrading and cynical and depressing it really is, which is why I don't watch that show. I suppose there's a place for bum-fights and hair-pulling knockdown dragout fights and the people who revel in participating in them, but is that what you guys are aspiring to? Because it certainly sounds that way from the FB laments some of you are making.

When Sculli first posted about getting rid of the FB, I honestly thought it would be a mistake. A lot of content came from there, but after thinking about it awhile I realized I didn't really care what that content was. It was just fun to watch the sparring. Most of it was verbal assault which would do justice to an alcoholic tranny on Cops. And that's when I realized I wouldn't be sad to see it go.

If Sculli wants to raise the bar around here, I welcome the change. It'll take some adjustment, but I think most members of this community will get there. As has been mentioned, this thread has gone through multiple pages without falling into the old FB-style banter. Did it really kill you to write that way?

Asking....? I don't see anyone asking.... what I see is a bunch of people being forced.

Asking implies that people have a choice (& I don't consider 'accept it or leave' a choice, because you're forcing people who stick to their principles to leave)

Being forced to what? I'd like you to actually type what you're being forced to do so you can see how silly this is. To not flame? To not insult? The person you quoted called it being asked/forced "to show courtesy and respect." You dont' like being forced to do that? What is the SPIN way to say it if that's not how this is?

If you're too weak to do it on your own--if you can't control yourself, there's no place for you here. Sign up on the ripoff forum that looks like QCDN if you don't like not being able to call someone a retard or a nazi. No respectable forum allows it, because it is intolerable.

Okay ^^

Honestly I have feelings on both sides of the fence about teh FB but I do respect Sculli's idea and I think it's fine. I have an Idea though that maybe will act as a comprimise but it will take work on everyone's part. Also this idea may help alot of us post without feeling as if we are walking on eggshells.

Like the LS groups we have that require you ti sign up and be accepted to; maybe Sculli could creat a FB type group that could be like a new FB. This way it's not out in the open brining down the rest of the threads but still give us the guilty pleasure of a lil drama. Now it woul dneed several mods that woul dbe proactive and not allow this group forum to get out of hand. I did notice that over the last 6 months the FB got way way out of hand it's not just the mods fault it's everyones fault we as a community didnt police ourselves we can't expect the mods to do everyhting. So if Sculli made this group forum we woul dhave to keep it under control a littel better then the old FB. It is just an idea but maybe if both sides gave a little we could have something that resembled our old FB hence everyone wins in the end.

Being forced to toe the line. I have no problem show courtesy to someone (respect is a different thing ~ comes from someone earning it). What I object to is being told 'this is how you WILL act, or else your account status will be effected - or i'll just shut you up by deleting your post'

Kinda of like the North Koreans, told what they're allowed to talk about - with dissenters being eliminated.

Maybe so, but adults have the option to decide who deserves their courtesy and their respect. They don't have that decided for them. I tell my cousins to be nice to people because they don't know any better. I don't feel like anyone needs to/has the right to dictate who I respect and who I don't.

I do it all the time when I'm at work. Customers come in with their requests to include baked bean suppers in the newspaper or wanting to order reprints of photos we can't sell because they're taken by the Associated Press or they call to complain the carrier missed their house. Don't get me wrong, when you're working, it's in your best interests to be professional. I've never mistreated/disrespected a customer or fellow employee in over ten years of my working life.

But that doesn't mean I don't go home, fire up SA, and complain about them elsewhere.

I commented earlier that the FB was often too Jerry Springer for my tastes, and it's true. Springer is a fun show to watch... the first few times. No, because even with the noise and the fury that it provided, the FB was also home to some of the most thought-provoking and content-rich topics this board has ever seen. Look at last year's Thread of the Year competition. Five of the nine, and three of the four largest vote-getters, were all Flameboard topics. I learned a lot both posting and reading on that board, and there are plenty of others who would agree with that. Sometimes emotion breeds the worst of us, but it also bred the best of us.

(I'm also bitter that my April Fool's thread didn't win, but how can I stand up to the entertainment that was BoL Kirin?)

If Sculli wants to raise the bar around here, I welcome the change. It'll take some adjustment, but I think most members of this community will get there. As has been mentioned, this thread has gone through multiple pages without falling into the old FB-style banter. Did it really kill you to write that way?

It's no different then speaking to a buyer/customer on the phone, treating them like perfect ladies/gentlemen while on the line (despite their attitudes) and then hanging up, turning to your co-worker, and saying what a jerk they were to you on the phone. No different then when I'd make 500+ people in the theater want nothing more than to see me die in the end (which, let's face it, being a career heel means you take the fall plenty of times) and then walk backstage and go have a burger with the hero and his romantic foil.

I was insulted more times than I'd care to remember on the Flameboard, but they never bothered me. I was told to kill myself/have someone off me in that board. Told off a thousand times. Outside that board, maybe I'd get offended. But there, who cared? You slip on the gloves, you expect to get hit.

The Flameboard Cubs was never the GD Cubs, or the GT Cubs, or the AH Cubs, at least to the best of my memory. And really, none of them are the Cubs at work, or at the gym, or the arcade. But it was a part of me I enjoyed bringing out, and is it too much to say I'm sad to see it go?

Let me make it clear - I was initially on your side when you said the Flameboard was shutting down. Heck, if nothing else, it meant the board would feel less like work. But if QCDN is going to work and thrive post-Flameboard, show us how. Share your vision, instead of passing the buck to the same users who are both confused and hurt by your decision. Don't just sit there and tell us how this might work. Let us know it will, and get the ball rolling.
I will start a new thread in response to that when I get home tonight.

Ah, nice add-on there, after I had posted my reply.

And yes... wonderful implication there, that people who join the QCNN (which is what you're talking about) like calling people retards & Nazis. That almost smells like a flame.... O_o

Get used to that. It's going to be the rest of your life whether you live in a democracy or not. Law is admin, not you. You object to being told what to do? You really have no business on a community forum that's not yours if that's the case. It is not a right to post here. It doesn't even need to be SAID that you don't have a right to post here. Why it's even being argued that you should be able to say whatever you want and act however you want without it affecting your account...there IS no reason. If that's not what you think you should be able to do, please reword it because that is exactly what you said, in that quote.

If the FB had lasted two more days you'd find out what I think of it. But oh well. Not even I can touch that discussion with a 10 foot pole here and come out standing. Can do cheaing and cheaters aplenty, but not that.

No, it really is a choice. It may not be a choice you want to make, and you may resent having to make the decision because the outcomes aren't to your liking, but you are being asked by Sculli to decide your role at QCDN. Everyone who's glanced at this board over the past 2-3 days has decided or is in the process of deciding what they're going to do.

There's an old quote -- I wish I could find it -- along the lines of "If a man puts a gun to your head and tells you to kill your brother, he's not forcing you, he's tempting you."

Pere, what does it matter to you if people want to flame on anothe board? How is it "posing" if it offers somthing that this board has ceased to offer?

Primarily it matters because the names are similar enough to get ol' Scul some papers from that admin's ISP to have it shut down for mimicking QCDN, and I would not be quick to try to disagree with that without a little history in gaming forums. That's pretty much it right now. Hasty decisions meet quicker end, but the name. Not appropriate in the least bit.

This is what QCDN doesn't need. The people who know they can't stop calling each other pathetic, worthless, idiot beggar fanboy moron fools-of-turd's-corn-drippings. Sound familiar? Sounds old to me.

Hmm, good point, because even when the flameboard was around, there were limits. And quite honestly, I wouldn't want the flameboard back without moderation, or else it would get out of control.

I suppose I resent the Admin's (ie. law, dictatorship, whatever) ability to pick & choose what gets deleted without anyone's input but they're own... & without anyone being the wiser. All you see is [locked] and the content erased. We never actually know what was in there, we never actually know if it deserved to be deleted. Kind of like when gilsellers bought a bunch of forums & eliminated their negative press.

Should you have been kicked? Should it have been deleted? Who knows? Only Sculli. He's got complete autonomy & if you want to stick around then by God, you'd better do what he says. At least in a democracy the people who inhabit it have some form of feedback (votes). All we have is one person (and whatever close circle of friends/advisors he has surrounding him).

That would be cool, and mature...The world of competitive naming of Quetzy discussion forum servers is cut throat!!!
Serious business.

Meanwhile flames in a flame board, which are obviously "Jerry Springer" quality get knocked for being "Jerry Springer" in quality, and in the right place.

Charah come on now, that's forum posting everywhere. All you see, at best, is *this post was deleted for violation of terms* Site mods and admin are not going to leave violations up so you can know that they did indeed violate. It can't work like that. If you don't trust the mods and the admin--if you think they're deleting posts that aren't violations...I really don't see a solution to that mistrust, no matter what forum you're on.
