RMT Countermeasures

I think the better solution would be to delete the POL-ID completely for verified buyer/sellers. Not only are all the chars gone, but they'd need to buy a new copy of the game as well.

well, one of the problems with a lawsuit is... that the gilslling sites idn't doing anything illegal. They don't really SELL the gil, they give it to you for free. But they charge for the service. As in, they charge you for the delivery. Not really the gil itself, and thus it's not illegal.

This may be true, but I do find it odd that how much "free gil" u get by how much u pay. It's ignorant how the "legal system" ignores that fact.

It's far more likely that SE deleted the characters that actually HELD all of the gil, which are the characters that no one other than gil buyers(who got the gil from them) and gil sellers(who send the gil to them) are aware of the names. The gil sellers that everyone knows are just the grunts, they get the gil and pass it to other people to distribute to gil buyers. By hitting the people who actually held all of the gil and sent it out to the buyers, SE made a much bigger impact on the gil selling market than just deleting the gil earners.

The last time they deleted the gil sellers who camped hnm's the next batch of gil sellers was camping hnm's within a week, so taking out the earners obviously doesn't really hurt companies like IGE. This move was a swift kick in the balls to gil sellers, and it's results were almost instantaneous as has been shown in the few threads about how gil prices have gone up significantly.

This is exactly right.

In example, when the police are trying to seriously cut drug use in an area, they don't jail all the little weed addicts, or even the minions selling on the corner. They go after the supplier for the area.

Last time they banned the street-corner gilsellers, nothing happened. They were back in a month. If they go after the money holders, the middle men, they can cut the link between the farmer and the player. No link, no RMT. Of course these accounts were all just lvl 1 alts, so I wouldnt count on them being gone for good. They just have to buy another copy of the game. They did lose a ton of money by having all of their product destroyed of course, but thats a risk of the business I guess.

GG Squeenix timing this with the X-box launch though. Makes them look great.

Like someone said, if they indeed generated large amount of money by a sofware hack, this thing will only remove this part of the gilsellers, and it's probably the part we have never seen (you don't need to farm anything to do this).

Less or more expensive gil to sell will indeed slowly lower demand and lower prices. But the money that's been ilegally introduced into the system cannot be removed. They merely stopped the flux, they didn't empty the bucket, that's why prices will NEVER go back to "normal". I bet SH for instance, will go back to 11M or so and stop there.

Technically, stored gil on RMT mules isn't in circulation. It's not being used. It's virtually not around. So no, it will prices will not change as a result of this.

Yes they will, because prices are based on speculation. People think prices are bound to fall as a result of this, so they will sell a lot of thier unused high value items. This floods the market, dropping prices. Of course it's only temporary.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I got the IGE email that there are out of gil on Feb 6th during the day, and on Feb 7th I reveived another email from the affiliate manager saying that currency is back in stock and all is good.

I am not saying SE didn't do stuff, I guess I am saying that it hampered the RMT business for a whole day ...., at the most.

Only Sculli can get away with that comment.. LoL

how do I get on that mailing list!?!?!?
j/k

I was hoping that it would affect them more...

Yeah I agree, the current deflation is mostly psychological. Or maybe the people are getting a bit smarter and they wait a tad before buying at an inflated price nowadays. One can only hope.

For the prices anything can happens:

People will have less gils so they will think more before buying things crazy prices

People will have less gils so they will need to sell their things at higher prices

In theory it would take a little while for that 10 billion gil (or whatever) to settle out into "true" deflation.

As to what the long term effect is going to be, we'll just have to wait and see.

it's simple. As the sold gil is still in circulation, but new cant be bought as easily, prices will fall by a little bit over the course of a month, but then the gil sellers will have worked up some gil and start selling again, which will, once again, make prices raise slightly.

So basically, nothing will happen unless SE does it on a weekly or monthly basis.

Yes and no. 10 billion of the gil they would theoretically be acquiring is *gone*, and assuming SE continues to monitor exploits, it will take quite a long time to get that much gil back into the system. Right now, the effect of that gil being missing is negligible, but we ought to notice some effect in a month or two.

It takes more effort to push the up button more so more gil gets sent. So obviously they are chargin you for them having to put out more effort and push up a couple times more! DUH!

Yes and no, 10 mil is *gone*, so far it's true. *BUT* you also forget that gil wasn't in circulation, and was just sitting on mules. And thus, the same ammount of gil as before is in circulation.

At the best bulk rate at IGE.com, 300 Billion gil translates to about 47 thousand dollars in lost profit. That's a kick in teh nuts for any business short of Microshaft levels.

I'd say it was in circulation. By that logic, money I have on me that I have yet to spend is out of circulation and thus there is actually no money in circulation at any given second. I would say that the potental that gil possesed is no longer there though, and thats kinda neat. I always wondered what would happen if a chunk that large dissapeared so suddenly.

Exactly. The money was on mules, yes, but the mules were simply holding it before sale/use, and you can be confident that those mules cycled through quite a bit of gil.

10 BILLION btw. o_O
