So, FFVIII?

So, i'm going on to play FFVIII, but my question to the QCDNers was, how much did you like it? I mean, you hear alot of stuff about FFVII, the older ones, FFIX and stuff, but I really havn't heard much about FFVIII.

What did you think about it, I was just looking at the junction system and it looks really different then what I am used to.
 
once u get into the main story and get past the beginning it should be much more fun.

(i liked it if my opinion counts)
 
I loved it. The story got weird, but the gameplay and boss battles were solid. Plus it holds my vote for most realistic looking human characters from the PS1 era.

The biggest gripe people had about it was the magic system, though.

Junction was cool, and allowed a lot of customization of characters. Some where cheap and absolute(100 Deaths + Squall,) but you could break away from cookie cutter strategies and play however you like.
 
My favorite final fantasy ^^ loved the junction system. Characters were pretty kewl, even if weird. Lionheart is just the best limit ever :D
 
The junction system is fun, but can get tedious at times. Especially since the more powerful magic in the game, you really can't use in battles because using it can mean lowering your stats by using the magic that is junctioned.

Battle system is fun though, there is no MP, so you can summon GF's (basically your summons) any time you want, and the limit breaks are cool. Also, if you really are hardcore abou it, you can get squall (or your entire party) to level 100 before leaving the first disc. This game has a lot of secrets and the storyline is great, I've beaten it twice so far, and I still love it.

Definitely play it if you have the chance ^_^b

I loved FFVIII as well, not my fav in the series, but I loved it nonetheless, the junction system was great, as well as the GFs, and Lionheart did kick ass, anyways thread takeover!: I want FFXII ;; : Back to FFVIII talk
 
VIII is my favorite of the PS1 Final Fantasy games. I always hear people crowing about how great VII is, but it left me feeling pretty cold in comparison. The junction system is pretty awesome once you get the hang of it.

It also has some of Nobou Uematsu's best music in the series.
 
I'm with Halifirien. I really disliked FF7. The story was just felt.. generic. Like it wasn't made by Square.
 
FFVII is my favorite. VIII was good too, I really liked it music >_> xD

I must say though, the final boss was a bitch. But now she's easy, as long as my junctioned magic that I need doesn't go kaboom!
 
the only factor that redeemed VIII in my eyes was the fact that you could totaly abuse and break the game system. Junction erased the need for leveling, and mostly made it a BAD idea to lvl. The fact that no monsers or bosses had a minimum level really sucked, because why would i bother leveling, if all it does is make somthing harder? And of couse, theres the Card game. the game that let you get almost every single item and ability before even taking the Seed test, or fighting Ifrit.

Story was interesting for maybe two discs, then it just fell into the trash can.

I enjoyed the junction system, but it was way too easy to exploit, and the whole enemies level up with you thing didn't thrill me too much. I will admit it did have some great music though, I love Legendary Beast and the song that plays when you fight Squall's rival, Seifer was his name I believe? \

One thing though, I really disliked Squall as a main character, I hated the whole attitude and he just didn't seem like a character I cared much for. Infact, the whole team felt somewhat mediocre, but thats my opinion.

Bit of advice, play that card minigame with EVERYONE, you'll want all those cards, and Diabolos is a kickass summon :lol:

Anyway, it was a good RPG, not the best Final Fantasy IMO, but it was a solid game, near the end I think they dropped the ball though, but the gameplay is worth it, and hey, it's got Quetzalcoatl as the FIRST summon, so it gets some bonus points there. :lol:
 
Beating Diablos as Laguna, Kiros, and Ward was my favorite moment in the game. :P Certainly put an interesting twist on the fight, not having any of the main characters good limit breaks to use. I <3 Desperado though, had nothing on most of Squalls breaks, but just looked awesome.

I was like "Wah, Magic Lamp? I didn't realize it was a usable item, wonder what.... it... does...*techno battle music*"

FFVIII was great! (in case my name doesn't give it away its my fav ff :P)

FFVII was pretty good. the story was kinda generic at times but i found sepiroths badass factor made up for it :P.

I personally really liked squall, as he seemed like a real person...i mean cloud was pretty much "yeah i dont have a clue about my past but i will go ahead and kick your ass anyway!" Zidane was just plain annoying "yup i'm an honest thief!" and tidus was just a whiney bitch.

i never liked diablos much to be honest..the fact that you couldn't use him on anything other than normal enemies sucked (although his abilities such as darkside more than made up for it).

My main peev with FFVIII was when you swithced to kronos, ward and laguna and i mesed up the junction exhance and they all died because they were lvl 5 and could only do really weak "Attack"'s lol.

But yeah...FFVIII > All!

Thats the downfall of 7. Sooooooooo boring.

characters: sucked
Story: mostly sucked.. interesting paradox.. but stupid Rinoa :\
Music: not bad
Graphics: fine
Battles: Useless
Junction: interesting but made the game too easy
Magic: Useless
World: interesting

Overall: Pretty bad

Pfft, the main characters are never the coolest ones.

FF VII: Sepheroth, Barret, Tifa
FF VIII: No one, they all annoyed the crap out of me ("Whatever...")
FF IX: Vivi, Steiner
FF X: Auron, Rikku
FF X-2: Rikku, Gippal, Brother
 
Sepheroth was cool but Rufus > Sepheroth :D

and I think Cloud was pretty cool. FFVIII.. well hmm I really can't think of one character that didn't suck. Seifer is the closest.. but even then :\ FF9.. Zidane was funny XD I nice change of pace from the other FF heroes with their rather depressing status. Steiner was the best, no doubt about it. Auron in FFX was awesome and I liked Yuna. Rikku was just a stupid whore :\ even more a whore in FFX-2. FFX-2 really didn't have any good characters either.. FFVI.. I actually think I liked every character like how I liekd every character in FFVII.
 
FFVII: Sepiroth, Red, vincent and aeris (just for the whole "oh look i was wearing the most powerful white magic as a hair accessory all along hahaha!")
FFVIII: Squall, Seifer, Zell, Quitis, Laguna and Rinoa
FFXI: Vivi, Beatrix, Armaront (or however you spell it) and Kuja (steiner annoyed me)
FFX: Yuna, Auron, Lulu. Rikku was annoying as hell.
FFX-2: Yuna i guess...to be honest FFX-2 was just a disgrace...

but stupid Rinoa :\
