While I agree, Pere, that using the word "retard" as an insult is kind of innaccurate, you can't just take it in the literal sense of the word. So many of the words we use in every day language shouldn't even be used in that situation. As has been stated, "Gay" is a common one, especially on the internet, where everything is gay. Another example: "sucks," "This game sucks." The game doesn't literally suck (obviously), it's just the general connotation of the word suck has grown to become "is bad" for lack of a better definition.

It's just whether or not you take it at face value or just use the general connotation. In today's society, more often than not "retarded" just means stupid. Just depends whether you're assuming the person to be speaking in literal terms or in figurative terms.

You don't have the right to define someone else's label that they claim as their own. Gay is theirs, not yours to make insults with it as you see fit. Retarded is, likewise, theirs. You CAN use them and tell yourself that it's ok. But in reality, you're only fooling yourself.

General connotation is really general mass ignorance and low-denominator. As someone said, it reflects on you and the peer group who accepts you when you say these insults are "common." Shows that you don't hang around the best types of people. In reality, your population that you interact with is skewed, and low-end skewed. But that's another topic.

Heh. I'll ignore the fact that this sounds like a personal jab to me, I could be reading it wrong. True, connotation could be defined as ignorance, but the simple fact is, that connotation exists. Were every word to mean only it's definition, we'd speak very differently.

Also, when did the mentally handicapped "claim" the word retarded as their own? I fail to see the point when the gays "claimed" the word gay as their own personal label, I was always under the impression that these labels were applied, rather than "claimed."

Your impression is wrong, then. Both are self-labels. Deaf is a self-label. Even if the labels are applied by you, you choose to use them as insults and call that commonly accepted. It's commonly accepted by lowball rednecks. If you want a complex insult, go with that. It is both an insult and a self-stamped label, much like ****** has become. And even in that circumstance, where you didn't outright highjack a social label to use as an insult, you as the user don't get to define whether you meant it in a benign way or malicious way.

But for the most part, on this wasteland, you don't get the luxury of the complex social insults. You'd rather degrade gay people and the handicapped.

Probably because they don't stand a good chance of replying?

I'll agree that people wantonly using the word isn't right, and I understand how some people could be personally offended due to their experiences with actually retarded people in real life. Based on this definition, however, retarded can be synonymous as stupid, which is how people use it. Yeah, it might not be politically correct or nice, but neither is calling someone an asshole or a fucking moron.

I think something that needs to be mentioned is the fact that there isn't a retarded person alive that is going to get mad at you for calling them a retard. Gay people will get upset if you call them a fag in a derogatory manner (sometimes). Black people will get mad if you call them niggars (if you aren't black). Retards (sic) won't get mad if you call them retarded because most of them can't comprehend what it means.

If you call someone retarded and they get mad, it's because you are wrong.
