Skaw said:This is one of the hardest things to do, because you have to rewrite every Avatar ability to incorporate skill levels, test them to see if they work, then retune them again and again to where skill level doesn't send results in to astronomical levels, or below what they'd find acceptable. Give them time.

Skaw: Huh, works for me.
Me: Holy sheeit.
Winklewil: That can't be right.....

(On Lightsday)
Uncapped: Searing Light does about 140ish damage.
Capped: Searing Light does the full 210 damage.
Almost all typical War/Nin weapon combos saw no change to TP/hit, and the few that did saw a slight increase in TP/hit. They gave a dramatic boost to TP starting at around 480 delay, aka encouraging 2H weapons. How exactly was war/nin gimped by the TP change?Winklewil said:You'll notice that the very first step they took in trying to "encourage warriors to sub other jobs" was to ever-so-slightly nerf the TP effectiveness of duel wielding for them.
Winklewil said:I wouldn't be so eager, if I were you. I really can't believe that I'm one of the only people to see the potential (and even likely) dark side of this change, but ... by far, the most likely method they'll use to implement this would be to have the level of effectiveness most summoners get right now with their avatars to be the "peak" that one could attain at maxed-out skill level, and actually begin to work backwards from that to account for an under-levelled skill.
Do NOT count on an actual improvement. You don't necessarily want this.

I don't know why everyone falls for it every time. If they tell you they want to "encourage" people to do things more one way than the other, it almost definitely doesn't mean the less popular thing to do will get a buff, unless they flat out say it will. Rather, they're going to weaken the more popular thing.
/sigh

SE gave Magic/combat skills to all jobs for more than just show :/Rufus_Shinra said:Well, they gave summoners summoning magic skill for a reason. I doubt it was just for show.

They released their point of view about job progression at the fan fest thing, and their take on SMN was that they summon > BP > release, and that they were working on something to encourage them to do more with their avatars. They also threw in a bit about making summoning magic do something in a seperate comment I believe.Wataza said:I missed the part where SE was trying to "encourage" Summoners to use their Summoning Magic....
Never said that at all. They're trying to "encourage" them to give a flying fart about their summoning skill, not summons in general ... in addition to "encouraging" them to leave their avatars out instead of just pacting and dismissing.Wataza said:I missed the part where SE was trying to "encourage" Summoners to use their Summoning Magic....
Winklewil said:Still, I've noticed nobody challenged my "Main Point"™ assertion that there's a very strong likelihood that making the summoning skill "matter" could just as well mean something that is more akin to a nerf than a boost.
Once again, I can only advise against being too eager. When it comes to MMO developers, I've seen nasty surprises spring forth from (what people interpreted as) enticing promises one too many times
