thanks? no, thanks. - reputation ftw

The "Thank You" button has been removed, the reputation system has been reinstated.

Short summary of reasons that led to this decision:
- too many "thanks" were visually disrupting the thread
- there was no way to leave a comment on why someone was thanked
- there was no way to leave a disapproving rating
- the ability to quickly leave positive feedback without to make a post may in essence lead to more negative posts as those who disapprove will post while those who approve already approved with their "thank you"

Naturally, now a rating frenzy will ensure, but eventually things will even out. I am committed to keep the rep system going. In the next vBulletin version which will be released soonish no page reload will be required to leave a rating and comment, which will make things easier yet.

Currently you need to leave a comment if you wish to rate someone. That comment is public, so keep that in mind.

I will change it around so that no comments for positive ratings will be required, but I need to figure out where in the code this needs to be changed (no GUI option for that). Will do that over the weekend.

The current "ranks" are as follows:
User is infamous around these parts -999999
User can only hope to improve -50
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past -10
User is an unknown quantity at this point 0
User is on a distinguished road 10
User will become famous soon enough 50
User has a spectacular aura about 150
User is a jewel in the rough 250
User is just really nice 350
User is a glorious beacon of light 450
User is a name known to all 550
User is a splendid one to behold 650
User has much to be proud of 1000
User has a brilliant future 1500
User has a reputation beyond repute 2000

Feel free to suggest better rank titles, and perhaps a different spread of points.

I didn't reset the reputation points members previously acquired, so some may already have a few more (or less) points than others.

Eh, already found a glitch, the uninstall of the "Thank You" hack didn't remove the : from the profile (displayed under the postcount). Will fix that tonight sometime.

Out of curiousity, is the rating system's sole purpose to show other users how good/bad a certain person's reputation on the board is?

You could try using the fame rankings from FFXI to give it a more FFXI feel when viewing someones reputation, with alterations of course, but hopefully you get what i mean^^; e.g.

[Name], eh? Hmm... That name is vaguely familiar... But I'm afraid few in this town have heard of you. Just keep working at it. You'll make a name for yourself eventually.
Level 2:
Oh, so you're [Name]...Yes, I heard some travelers in a tavern talk about you. It seems you've a fair reputation.
Level 3:
[Name]! You have become well known in these parts! I hear much of your accomplishments. Keep up the good work, and greatness lies in your future.
Level 4:
Hello, [Name]! I hear your name mentioned quite often these days. You've done well, my friend. Keep at it.
Level 5:
Hello, [Name]! A good deal of people here in Jeuno know about you! And they all say you're quite the do-gooder! Thank you for serving our fair city. Keep up the good work!
Level 6:
Why, it's [Name]! Your growing reputation precedes you. We hope your already substantial contributions to our humble city will continue to grow with time.
Level 7:
Why, hello, [Name]. I say, literally everyone in Jeuno knows your name. It is my pleasure to inform you how impressed we are with your service to Jeuno. We hope to see more of your commendable generosity in the future!
Level 8:
Lord/Lady [Name]! To all citizens here, your name is synonymous with courage and sacrifice. Not a day goes by without hearing of your saintlike service to Jeuno. I speak for all of Jeuno when I express my sincerest appreciation for your generosity. Indeed, bards shall sing of your virtues for ages to come!
Level 9:
You have emerged as a hero to the people of Jeuno. Just the sound of your name strikes courage into their hearts. As a representative of its citizens, I humbly ask you to continue your efforts for the good of the duchy.

Something like this perhaps? (compare with Level 9 fame)

I was looking forward to this change...it will help get rid of PC+1's.

I like it. It will make topics look a lot more streamlined without all the "thanks" underneath the posts and the negative option will come in handy.

I like this idea.
but how do we see someones reputation? i dont see anything under our names but a blank ":" section where the thanks used to be.
nothing in their profile or anywhere else. is this still to be implemented or turned on?
and i assume this has been in place for awhile, i checked my user cp and i have reputation points from back in december.

and will there be rules implemented such as someone trolling a certain users posts just because they dont like them and constantly giving them bad reputation points thus making them look like a bad person in the end if that troll overshadows the positive points?

I guess the same can be said for maybe having a friend just give u tons of positive points all the time.

the bad points rule can also be something along the lines of someone just doing it because u disagreed with them. Say someone makes a post saying "Burnt bread is awesome" and you disagree with them.
So you make a post that can be about anything, lets say "I had a baby!" and the person gives you goes in your thread just to give u bad reputation points only because you disagreed with them on a legit level, now they disagree with you on something beyond pointless just as "Revenge"
if you get what i am saying.

Will there be rules implemented that avoid such things?

Hover your mouse over that little green dot under the : and you'll see the various messages.

At another message board I used to frequent (now shutdown ; ) the rep system was nearly identical to this one, except they called it karma.
I don't know if QCDN's system has rules implemented into it, I can explain what kinds I've seen though. Only 10 positive or negative points could be given out each day/24 hours (each 1 of the 10 points will have a 24hr timer when used) to unique users. However you could still give positive/negative points to the same person at a rate of 1 point per day.
There was nothing people or the system could do about revenge...but it really didn't seem to have much of an affect on someones karma. The positive usually outweighs the negative, with most people.
Somepeople were known for trolling however, seemingly purposly being assholes to gain a negative rep. True trolls setup multiple IP's and their alter-ego's can't be traced back to their originals - real geeks or something...Just trying to gain more negative points, turning their green blocks into black ones. And then again, some people were just real pricks or spoke their mind.

So from my experience, this gives users of a message board the chance to be more personal with eachother if they're agreeing/congratulating/disagreeing or what have you.

The main difference from the reputation system I experienced...Is it was on the message board only. The reputation on this message board can be linked to FFXI which brings on a whole other level.

Can we filter users below a certain raiting?
Because otherwise this just become an E-Peen thing. At least with the thanks function you could see who agreed with a post.

im in agreement with mara here. Why so set on rating system? a agree disagree buton whould do much more justice.

The "Thanks" button was part of a vBulletin modification someone else coded and I just downloaded from vBulletin.org. No one made a "I disagree" button modification, and I don't know enough about the coding part to create it myself.

Filtering below a certain rating isn't part of the vBulletin reputation system. Personally I wouldn't implement that even if it were, because if anything, that would lead to people ganging up on someone just to keep him or her high or low. While this is of course still possible to a degree with the current system, it is not as much of an issue when posts do not get "removed" from the default view due to rating.

I will write more about the settings used here later on today, after I think about whether disclosing how exactly the ratings accumulate would do more good than harm, or the other way around. :)

good job.
i always though the "thank you" thing was dumb.

I didn't mind the Thank you button too much, but this sounds pretty sweet :)

I enjoyed the reputation when it was implemented in the past, and my attitude toward it hasnt changed yet.

Only one suggestion from me. I'd really like there to be more than one 'pip' to reflect the Reputation status so that I dont have to hold my pointer over the one pip just to see where their reputation stands. With each pip designating a new status of reputation, it makes it so much easier to be able recognize 'said' member's rep. visually, which is always nice.

I miss the thank you button. I thought it was cute. I didn't use it much-- but the minute it was gone I couldn't help but want to use it.
