So, a couple of days ago MS dropped the ban hammer on modified firmware consoles again, taking out hundreds to thousands of people with modified firmwares and banning their consoles completley from xbox live.
This happened once before back during the halo 3 beta test, one in which i myself was banned. I have lived with having a modified box for offline play and an online box non modified. But mere days after the most recent ban, Hackers have slapped microsoft in the face.
By finding a way to UNBAN their consoles. Infact, it was one sole hacker from france.
The methods this is done with will cause major problems if MS tries to drop another ban hammer in the future.
You see, the hacker used the currently heavily worked on Hypervisor exploit (read up on it, its the key to homebrew on 360) and he replaced the keyvault of his banned 360 with the keyvault of an unbanned 360, therefore making his now unbanned.
If MS were to drop a banhammer on people doing this, It would ban two consoles at once....and chances are the unbanned keyvault is an innocent non modded box with an innocent owner. Chances of a keygen for these keyvaults is certainly possible.

While this method, along with the hypervisor exploit is not currently very simple, or anywheres close to simple to achieve to the average user yet, it will be, oh it will be.

Someone at microsoft just let out a loud, thanksgiving, "FUCK!"

This is honestly why no one likes hackers. If you want to be an idiot and use a modded box and get banned, just take the responsibility for the dumb thing you did. If my box gets banned because some jackass from france or somewhere else decided to get my code because he didn't want to take responsibility for his stupid shit, i'm going to be ungodly pissed.

Things like this is how people wind up either dead or in jail, for a very long time, for stupid shit. It's only a matter of time before one of the two happen.

doubtful since this exploit is identical to the EEPROM exploit on xbox 1, unless you know what it is or know where to look to see whats going on, youll never know.

Modding the 360 is like using a game genie on a NES, so were you against that too Makelith?

Since the beginning of video games people have been trying to mod their systems to mess around in games to make them more fun, or challenging. Shit, im sure youve seen the 'that 70's show' where they mod their pong game for smaller paddles right? SAME FUCKING THING, except, more advanced, which happens as time goes on.

People aren't hacking to cheat in games. They are doing it to play burned games. That is nothing like GameGenie. That is where your analogy fails.

Why would they track bans by keyvault and not some algorithm that enumerates some long-ass key from the MAC or S/N, or a pimp combo of both? The MAC might be changeable but I thought the S/N of these things was written to some single-write flash.

Same concept though. Why does it matter if the system is modded? Its a piece of hardware capable of much more than it is being allowed, so people exploit its weakness and open it up a bit more. Simple as that.

I guess the fact that im a computer freak and love modding and messing around with my computer seperates me from alot of people. I simply dont see the problem.

im the same, i love tinkering with things and making them more powerful, or do something out of the norm, people see it and say "how the fuck did u do that?" and that gets me giddy. Ive been like that my whole life, when i was a young kid i used to take apart my electronic toys and see how they worked, i lost alot of toys, but as time went on...i actually figured out how things worked and made em better, like my old speak and spell that used to sing rappers delight XD twas my first modding accomplishment at age 10.
dont get me wrong, im not some nerd guy with electronic components laying all around building time machines and what not (tho i have thought about building one.... XD)
i do way too much and have way too many talents in too many things, music, writing, computers, electronics. artwork.
i just cant help the calling of messing with electronics and software. Hell i just sold me soft modded ps2 today, i dont do these things to get by on the free for games, i still buy what i like, for me its a matter of being able to play a game as much as i want to see if its worth my money. and when i buy the game, ill still used the burned copy because i dont wanna ruin my original.
People like to say hackers are out with malicious intent all the time to make people feel bad, well there are hackers like that, but never in the communites i belong to. we do things for the fun and better good of it all. Hell, Xbox-scene is the biggest xbox modding community EVER. and they ban on the spot if they find someone pirating games, if you even so much as hint you are pirating you are gone, good example of this is just look at the recent front page news about the bannings and go to the forum and skip to the last post, it was locked and people were banned because of pirating talk and most of the bans being pirates.

There is a difference between liking electronics and modifying them. To take a commercial piece of electronic equipment and change it to do what you want is fine and dandy, but when it is used like a modded 360 to play games you haven't paid for, there is a huge difference. You say you are openning up the piece of hardware, but it was restricted for a reason. Exploiting a weakness is the exact thing people like you are getting banned for and I say good riddance. Buy games like the rest of us.

While the rest of us take the risk on the game. Like I said before, spend you money like the rest of us.

Yeah pirating is always an issue which i am not sure of my stance on it, so ill keep my nose out of this discussion

Its nothing like this at all, and its completely stupid to equate the two.

No, it is not the same thing. Modding your game of online pong doesn't get a completely innocent person banned from playing online pong.

Same concept though. Why does it matter if the system is modded?

I don't care that you mod your system. Go ahead and mod to your hearts content, but when you start interfering with my game play, because you can't keep your hands off of that automatic battle rifle in halo, i'm gonna be pissed. Its why no one like modders, plain and simple.

I simply dont see the problem.

When you are banned from xbox live for having a modded xbox, when you did no modding what so ever, because some douche from France couldn't take responsibility, i'm sure you still won't see the problem right?

would love to, but some people have a better time at getting money than others, with two kids, house payments and bills, and such a high work shortage in my city i cant even get a job at mcdonalds, its not much of an option for me to just risk my money on something i wish i had not paid for. besides, my medical condition right now doesnt let me know if ill be here tomorrow or not, and wasting money isnt something i can do guilt free and leave my family behind with extra high priced bills because i bought things i didnt need. Me buying games anymore is so limited its rare, i just bought Cod 4 so i can hang out with some out of town friends online a little longer since who knows if ill see them again before they get out of the army. before that the last game i bought was shadowrun.

So if you are unable to buy games, then it's ok to do something illegal. You are no different than the people who resort to robbery because there are "no jobs".

Let me know when you get banned because of this, because the odds of getting picked are horrendous.

Stop worrying about this shit and live life or something. Its not the end of the world in the rare rare chance that you get banned, and chances are M$ is going to figure out a better way to do it.

Completely not the point. By doing this, *someone* innocent will be banned. Its the same chance for everyone in the world, but the point of it is that it will happen to someone completely innocent.

I live life plenty, and i don't need to mod my xbox to do it durrhurrherr. Go out and live your life or something instead of modding your xbox and getting someone innocent banned (ooo see what i did there?).

Until MS does figure out something, anyone who does what the french guy did is in the same boat with him. The lowest scum of the gaming community.

with what time i got left, i think i could rob a bank honestly. But either way, there will never be a time i care about what people think about what i do, because it doesnt matter most of the time if what your doing is good or bad, theres always someone who is jealous and doesnt like it because they cant do it anyway. and every game i have liked that ive bought doesnt make it robbery, and every game i didnt like that i didnt buy, i got rid of the disc.

Normally I'd be opposed to pirating games, but then again, considering Microsoft's history, it's pretty humorous them taking a stand against software piracy. Hell, the original Windows was just a reverse-engineered rip off of the Mac OS. I guess it's alright for them to pirate software and sell it under their name, but it's wrong for everyone else to pirate software for personal use.

lol You think I am calling you out because I can't do it myself? Quite the contrary. I do have the ability to mod my 360 but I don't because I actually respect copyright laws and intellectual property rights. It doesn't matter if you went and bought the game weeks later, or threw the disc out because you didn't like it. It's still illegal and you are still fucking over the people who make these games for a living. Believe all you want that it's only one disc so it doesn't make a difference, but either way it's still shitty how much you think you are better than the average thief.
