So, a couple of days ago MS dropped the ban hammer on modified firmware consoles again, taking out hundreds to thousands of people with modified firmwares and banning their consoles completley from xbox live.
This happened once before back during the halo 3 beta test, one in which i myself was banned. I have lived with having a modified box for offline play and an online box non modified. But mere days after the most recent ban, Hackers have slapped microsoft in the face.
By finding a way to UNBAN their consoles. Infact, it was one sole hacker from france.
The methods this is done with will cause major problems if MS tries to drop another ban hammer in the future.
You see, the hacker used the currently heavily worked on Hypervisor exploit (read up on it, its the key to homebrew on 360) and he replaced the keyvault of his banned 360 with the keyvault of an unbanned 360, therefore making his now unbanned.
If MS were to drop a banhammer on people doing this, It would ban two consoles at once....and chances are the unbanned keyvault is an innocent non modded box with an innocent owner. Chances of a keygen for these keyvaults is certainly possible.
While this method, along with the hypervisor exploit is not currently very simple, or anywheres close to simple to achieve to the average user yet, it will be, oh it will be.
Someone at microsoft just let out a loud, thanksgiving, "FUCK!"
