Thompson and Obama on GTA (and etc.)

In defense of kids now-a-days...

Yes, most of us here are older now and have been playing violent video games for quite a few years. We turned out fine, right? Here's the difference I think. We also played outside a lot too. I know I played multiple sports and was outside EVERY day (except like, rain. sometimes) Now I almost NEVER see kids outside. I mean, what the fuck is wrong with these parents? I played videogames in the morning (I'd get up at 5:30-6:00, play videogames and listen to sportscenter every morning) and evening from like 7-8 or 7-9. Saturday mornings and sunday mornings would be games all morning until 11, then outside I went. That's obviously not the way it is anymore. It's not the games making the kids violent. It's the lack of a social relationship being developed so that these kids understand the importance of interaction with other people. Hard to be violent to someone when you have the higher understanding of the value of life. I don't think you get that from videogames. You get that from playing with other kids IRL, not in a game. Not online. In person.

Of course, this is my own personal belief. I don't expect this to align with everyone's, but I know a lot of people who would agree that the lack of social interaction in person in regards to children makes a big difference into the development of their personalities throughout life.

when i was picking up my copy of the game i noticed there was a kid there in line maybe 11 or 12 years old with his grandmother there
This is part of the problem too. It's not always the parents that are buying the games for their kids although the parents should be aware of what people are buying for their kids. Being that a lot of parents are both working full time jobs now, the kids could easily sneak something in if they convince a grandmother or other relative who knows nothing about the game to buy them one. It does come down to parents paying attention to what their child is playing and watching. There were tons of movies my mom wouldn't let me watch until I was old enough.

lol, that'd have been just awesome if i'd ever asked either of my grandparents to buy me a game titled "grand theft auto". i could just imagine the ass-beating i'd have gotten from my mom and dad (in that order).

My Granny probably wouldn't have but Meme would have done it and not even paid attention to the name most probably. She would ask us to pick something out or got our Mom to pick out stuff for us. My Uncle George and Aunt Kathy probably would have bought it. lol

That's why I'd love it if parents took an interest and learned they could disable M-rated games on their kid's console.

"goo-gobs" The new money amount.

I don't get why anyone is criticizing his use of a made-up word to describe a large amount of money. It's no different than saying "an assload" or "a crapton" or "a hell of a lot". From here on in, I'm going to completely rail on anyone who doesn't use exact amounts of anything when he or she is being descriptive, since this is apparently now the set standard.

OT: The problem, as I and many others have said, is a loss of responsibility and accountability, or more precisely a refusal to accept accountability (namely, "no, my precious Johnny would never hurt anyone, especially his teachers!").

The best thing anyone can hope for is to lead by example. Being the responsible adult in one's own child's life instead of attempting to be the child's best friend and not telling others how to raise theirs (the "who the fuck are you to tell me what to do?" stance), as opposed to showing and doing as one preaches, are keys to help rectify the problems that are now in place with the upbringing of children in the world.

I like how I read an article about how a 2nd grader i think hit his teacher in the face three times or something along those lines, and his grandma actually said it was the teachers fault. No it wasn't that her grandson was a littler fucker but that the teacher wasnt doing her job right and so it was basically her fault and okay that her gson hit the teacher in the face. It had nothing to do with video games or anything, but it just goes to show how stupid some parents/legal guardians are.

Edit: Heres the article:

Spoiler:
FORT MYERS: An eight-year old boy is about to get a first hand lesson in criminal justice. The second grader was arrested for allegedly punching his teacher in the face. NBC2's Patrick Flanary had a chance to speak to the young boy.

An argument over crayons in the classroom ended inside a patrol car for second grader Deshawn Williams. His wrists were in handcuffs and his teacher was badly bruised.

"He gets very upset and he loves to hit," said Deshawn's grandmother Dorothy Williams.

Dorothy says Deshawn often throws tantrums and gets physical, but never with adults.

At four feet tall and weighing only 70 pounds Deshawn may not appear threatening, yet he admits his tantrum went too far.

"I threw the chair over there and then she wants to press charges on me," said Deshawn.

Deshawn's teacher told Fort Myers police he hit several students, threw several chairs and when she tried to intervene, the boy threw several punches at her.

But Deshawn says he only hit her two times and says he did not hit her in the face. But police say the teacher did in fact have bruises on her face.

"If he was overpowering her that much, I feel like she shouldn't be in that line of work," said Dorothy.

We called Principal Dan Perry of the Royal Palm Exceptional School, but he refused to comment on his student's arrest.

Dorothy praises the school for Deshawn's education, but challenges the teacher's discipline methods.

"If she can't deal with him, put him in someone else's classroom. If it's a male, whatever, and let them restrain him," said Dorothy.

NBC2: What's the appropriate way for a teacher to restrain your son? By touching him?
Dorothy: Yes. If that's what she's got to do, she's got to do that.

Thursday, a judge will determine when Deshawn returns to school.

NBC2: What are you going to say to your teacher?
Deshawn: I'm going to say I'm sorry.

But first, he'll have to return to court on a felony charge of aggravated battery on his teacher.

I guess its more that she wasn't able to 'restrain' the kid so its her fault. And yet i can guarantee you if the kid had hit the teacher and the teacher had dont anything even slightly physical to restrain him, this same bitch would probably be calling harassment on the teacher. Passing blame is all it is, and parents need to take responsibility for how they raise their children. Also on a side note, no teacher should ever be put in a situation where they should have to 'restrain' a student, students should know to respect their teachers and be respectful in the school place. Just straight up shitty parenting.

Yeah, and the fact is that this is not a new concept. My paternal grandfather was an alcoholic piece of shit who could do no wrong in the eyes of his mother. Great-Granny-Green was very much all about the boys of the family. She went so far as to hate my mother, for reasons unknown. Yet: she thought the world of Granddad Green, my Dad (who incidentally is a great man), and <me>.

The teacher wasn't doing their job. The teacher should have taught that there are repricautions for your actions. And also taught the little bastard how to take a beat down.

I'd of ghetto stomped that fuckwad until he thought he was Superman. And no, not from the comic. I'm talking about Christopher Reeves.

Please note that I am not, and have no interest in ever becoming, a teacher.

Lol sorry if I'm derailing this, but honestly, I don't want my presidential elects talking like Bill Cosby. We're just getting done with 2 terms of jibba-jabba and I'd like the next one to be full of coherent sentences filled with real, sensible words.

You're asking for a bit much out of the shithead "elite" that run for president now-a-days. I think it's time for you to come back to reality.

Reality bites, that's why there are MMORPGs :)

yup, and you're gonna deal with shitheads here too lol

Another thing...

MADD is suing Take Two for featuring drunk driving in GTA4... Yes, we all know, drunk driving has been in MANY previous games... The most prominent in my mind is Redneck Rampage, lol. Hilarious game.

Redneck rampage was a kickass game.
