Those Were The Days!!!

I definitely did the "of course I can dodge attacks" dance with mobs when I first started. One of my favorite stories wasn't about so much about me, however, but about a random new person and my NPC.

The week that NPCs (Adventuring Fellows) were released, I was leveling mine in the Dunes. I was hanging out near the Selbina entrance to avoid messing with parties in the area, and had many people stop and ask about where the quest was for their own NPC.

One guy, however, apparently didn't realize just who ol' Raka was.

"Hi. Want to team up?"

I didn't respond, because I didn't know he was aiming that in my direction.

"Excuse me, I said would you like to team up and kill monsters together?"

At this point, I responded, "Nah, sorry, I'm just out here playing with my NPC", to which he says, "I wasn't talking to you, I was talking to her."

I laughed, and thought he was just playing around. He said, "So, do you?" and again I say, "haha, nah, thanks though."

He then told me that I needed to leave him alone or he'd have to call a GM, called my NPC a bitch, and left. I really wish I remembered who that was.

Her name is in green you doofus!!!

I think I threw away at least 5 stacks of beastmen seals altogether. Its not that I didn't know how to use them but rather I had no luck with bcnms. That and they were clogging up my gobby-bag too much.

I did the run-around-the-mob to try to avoid their hits, trained yags to the zone because I didn't understand the concept of aggro. I just thought somehow I pissed them off with my presence >.>

So uh . . . how many seals did you guys throw away?

(I'd rather not think about how many I tossed . . .)

Oh man, dont make me think about that. I threw away sooooooo many it makes me sad as to how much money I'd have if I hadn't done that =/

I'm pretty sure I did the "run around the mob" dance too. But one story I do remember is after I hit around level 12, I was happy to come back to Goblin Fishers at the south end of Ronfaure and just run around them (unclaimed) and type mocking /emotes because they were now "too weak." I decided to /sit in front of it and...it proceeds to pound my face in. That's when I learned sitting gets aggro too lol.

One thing I've always wanted to do was to find a brand new player and tell them, "Hey if you go RNG/RDM and use enspells, you get elemental arrows." Sadly, I never had the heart to fuck with anyone like that.

lol Raesvelg and Gangsta - great stories :P

I distinctly remember thinking "I gotta toss these stacks of weird seal things so I can get more crystals"

. . .

atleast im not the only one who did that

Wild onions warded off goblins because they gave you stank breath and revival tree roots could raise people. Wow, Cure IV for double my HP, I heard there's Cure FIVE, that must heal for 1000 HP!!!

What are you doing in the middle of West Ronfaure?
>>"Just hunting a monster."
Which?
>>"A Notorious monster called Jaggedy Eared Jack."
WTF IS THAT

The Spook! I can remember camping against Dragonx and Diary on a regular basis. Good times.

Going to Behemoth's Dominion for my first time and actually being lucky enough to see King Behemoth. I was only level 45 or so.

Being level 3 and dead for the first time in East Sarutabaruta... /sigh I waited 47 min til someone raised me. He explained to me about losing exp and how it didn't matter at such a low level, etc. The most intense 47 minutes of my life, what happened when the timer reached 00:00?!? I didn't know and didn't want to find out!!! LOL

When I first got the game in I believe March 2004 I bought the game at a good friend's (in game character's name is Ardin if you know him) insistence

We didn't know what servers were at the time, so we assumed that we could just make characters and meet up somewhere. He landed here on Quetz, I landed on Odin.

We decided since we both started in Bastok that we would meet up in front of the Markets AH. We both showed up, but we couldn't see each other (I wonder why..) and I ended up getting pretty mad and dropping the game entirely for a few days. He found out about world passes and servers and whatnot a bit after that and ended up getting gil to buy one from a JP guy, and I made Tymon.

Lot of nostalgia in the early days of Valkurm Dunes, Qufim, Kazham, etc

One of the cooler ones would be when I was around level 25 or so and was doing Bastok missions, and I needed to get the Delkfutt's key to get to the top of the tower. Some of the higher level friends in my LS at the time (I don't remember the name, but those friends were a RDM named Deon and Sgtslaughter) got us up there, with a lot of deaths in between, but they weren't high enough to solo the NM that dropped the key (I forgot his name :()

There were those RMT up there that farmed the other NM that would spawn every few minutes, it was a galka and a taru, I forgot their names but they went on to be pretty notorious HNM campers in the coming months/years. They actually asked us if we needed help and killed it for us. I didn't know much about them at the time, but I thought it was pretty nice.

Moving on to 2005 and 2006, I hung out with Gilga, Tyrath, Neosquall, Cami, Biggy, Deucrobont, some other guys a lot. Gilga needed to get a Loxley bow at one point, so we all spent a lot of time hanging out in Quicksand Caves to get him his bow. I was 75 PLD/NIN by this time, and I was the only guy that could solo Cactuars without worrying about dying, so I ended up being the bitch that had to stay around. We used to conference call (we didn't know about ventrilo or teamspeak) so it wasn't that boring. I ended up finding a nice route around the caves that led to me making like 15mil in cactus stems before we finally got the bow to drop. I think I killed the Save the Queen NM 3 times, the Shaman's Cloak NM 4 or 5 times, the Cactuar NM twice and the Loxley Bow NM at least 20 times before it finally dropped. Even so, some of my favorite time spent in the game.

We also worked really hard to get Biggy a Thief's Knife. We would camp with him whenever we weren't in QSC, and him and I were together and we finally got the knife to drop on the 101th kill. Ironically, he had to quit the game less than a week after. The knife is still on his account, but it's inactive.

Man, I could go on forever. I might just do that, too, but not in one post.

Large and Angle, wasn't it?

When I first started I couldnt figure out how to sort my inventory.... so everything would stay as singles until i sold or dropped them.

I never had problems with gil though, when i first started it was xmas, so i would sell event fireworks to pay the bills, then the event ended and I was SOL till i discovered mining and eventually smithing.... I had lvl 70 smithing before my warrior was 40, but that didnt help the noob problems, I was rocking full bastokan scale and dual wielding bastokan swords.... I stayed swd/swd into the 50's (in full I.M. by then) until someone explained to me about skill ratings... Kept telling me I was a B in swd, i just thought he was trying to insult my skill by giving me letter grades lol

I have a few of these...

Ahh my first time in Jeuno... Talked to the NPC, had my MH moved, took the airship back to Bastok, zoned into my old MH and found there to be no mog. I thought he stole my things :\

Couldn't figure out how I went broke when I thought AH fees were an in-game term for "downloading" new data on the AH.

Taking WAR to 30 with a polearm because I wanted to be a super dragoon. durr durr.

My early days as a WHM, I'd let tarus in my party die because I thought the noise they made when they died was the cutest thing I ever heard.

First time getting my airship to Kazham, running around town looking for the map vendor, then turning right back around back to Jueno to the map NPC then back to the airship to the jungle.

Hoarding animal glue because I thought the name of the item was goofy... I had like 8 full stacks at one point when they were selling well but refused to sell my beloved glue of animals.

Tossing Beastmen seals.

Discovering MMO vocab such as:

Mule - is not a pack animal but an alt character
Tank - is not a huge armored vehicle but someone who takes the ouchies from monsters
Link - Not a character from Zelda but in fact what happens when your ranger runs into that little cave in Valkrum Dunes and ends up bringing 5 lizards back :D
Camp - it sucks irl and sucks in game when waiting for 3 hours on internet dragons

Camping Ulli for 9 hours

Passing out pity party invites back in the day... you know what jobs you are/were ;)

I played back when SCs and MBs mattered

I leveled off tigers and cocks in Kufal Tunnel (sp?)

Speaking of that place.... getting chomped each and everytime I ran throught that hell hole by Gurrive (sp)

Laughing at subligar on male characters.

Took me a year to get my first job to 75, pre-ToAG days.

Discovering MMO vocab

YES! I so take it for granted now. But I vaguely remember when I first learned it. "Why won't these people speak English? Wtf is a mule?"

Oh I miss pre XP nerf... when 75 almost meant something.... and who doesn't love a good cock fight.. got my astral aspid or w/e it was down there from the pelican after an exp pt in which it raped us cuz we never saw it before >.>

Glad I wasn't the only person who leveled War to 30 using Polearm only. My Gaxe and axe skills were shit. God I even used Raiden Thrust just because it looked cool, that was back when numbers never mattered to me lol...

Anyone else remember leveling on the Coeurls in Labrinth of Onzozo, and the Raptors/Rocs in Valley of Sorrows in the 50-60 range? Those things were so damn evasive, but then again it may just have been the fact that Drg sucked ass back then. Back when breaking 500 dmg with Penta Thrust was considered good :<

You name it, I probably tried xping off it at one point or another. Many was the quest to find some new camp that nobody else knew about.

Back in the days when there was actual crowding for xp/merit camps.

I also remember being in some party in Quicksand caves. I had just recently gotten Penta Thrust on Drg, and considered it a huge accomplishment by my standards at the time. It was the weapon skill of weapon skills at the 50 level range so of course naturally it would be the only WS I'd want to use. Wellllll long story short the Blm in the party wanted me to open a SC with a Warrior so they could MB off it, and I didn't want to because he/she wanted me to use some shit WS like Raiden Thrust or Vorpal or something to open it. I think the Blm ended up leaving after that I don't really remember.

Let's see.. some obscure old popular camps

Clippers, Pugils, Gigas in Qufim.. Oh fuck a wight better zone in

Goblins and Gigas in Delkfutt's tower

Goblins and Yhoator Mandragoras, used to be 100 people there at any time

Goblins in Gustav Tunnel.. Crawlers and flies in CN

Cockatrice in Labyrinth of Onzozo.. Later, Toramas and Goblins. One of the most popular camps in the game, always overcrowded

Crabs, later Ovinnik and Cockatrice in Kuftal. Also hugely overcrowded

More crabs, goblins, pugils in Terriggan, Raptors and greater birds in Valley of Sorrows. Overcrowded at times, mostly JP time

Probably my favorite exp camp in the whole game, weapons in Ru'Avitau. Not as much camped, but amazing exp off birds in Ru'Aun

Later on in the game, Bibiki Bay was crazy overcrowded too. This lasted until around when level sync came into play, because there was still a gap in camps even after ToAU came out

Hobgoblin Angler camps were always overcrowded. Catoblepas, too

Man, I don't think any of those are very popular at all anymore. They used to be so huge. And fun to exp in, too.
