So I have finally completed the game 20 min ago and all i can say is, wtf was up with all the bad reviews? It had its flaws sure but it certainly deserved some higher scores.
I love how in the reviews they said the story made no sense or was lacking...i loved the story. And thats because it takes knowledge of norse mythology to understand, i recognized every name, place and character mentioned and knew the back story, thus making the story much clearer.
I guess they aimed their sights on the more knowing market and left those who know nothing of that sort of thing in the dark without going into depth in the story line about most of those back stories.
Ill start with what i hated i guess:
- The Cutscene they play when you die of the Valkyrie coming down to take you to Valhalla. You cant skip it, and it takes like 45 seconds for the scene to finish. You have to view it every single time you die. and when you get surrounded by the goblins and have people shooting you and missiles coming at you all at once in some areas...you die often.
-Sliding doesnt always lock on and your left standing there in the middle of a room swinging your sword around wildly instead of sliding to the enemy, not often, but enough to be noticed.
-Ballistics seemed like an after thought, No cool moves thrown in for them its just aim and shoot and occasionally shoot in 2 different directions. No cool flips while shooting or power shots...nada. Lasers sucked too.
-Game seemed short, While the 4 areas there are take some time to get through, especially the last area, it still seemed short.
-No real reason to play multiplayer unless you want that single achievement, or farming loot and kills, theres actually 2 achievements but one of them is easily gotten in single player using the A.I.
what i liked-
-Total customization- You could put whatever stats, based off what runes you have, into any piece of gear you want. You can change the colors as many times as you want as well and get yourself feeling powerful and look cool while your at it.
-Sword play- Once you learn how to get those 2 in 1's to work, and your finishers you can ham it up with some awesome combos, especially mid air combat thrown into the mix. Coulda been some more combinations, but i still enjoyed it.
-The story- Was very cool and the end twist was cool too, cliffhanger ending for the sequel and all, but i liked how it panned out. They coulda used a little more character developement on people like HEL and the rest of the Aesir, but sticking with backing the main character isnt a bad thing either
-The spider, Battle cries and other power moves- I loved whenever i got into a bad way and was completely surrounded, i could drop my spider turret, step back and let my guns do the talking for a bit, or drop an RB explosion. Or if i was feeling like slaughtering them for trying so hard use a battle cry and go to comboville on their asses!
-Charm Quests- 1000 ballistic kills? i worked on that for like 2 1/2 areas just to get that damn charm, and it was so worth it. Its also another great way to clear up space from useless runes that dont cater to your characters needs, like i only used swords and pistols on my champion, so i didnt need rifle and hammer/staff runes.
-The different classes- its cool having different classes that play differently in SP and MP, and can be used for some team tactics in MP. Champion seemed a little stiff in the sword play area compared to classes like the berserker tho. My only wish is that they each had different combos instead of just slightly different animations based on their weapons.
i could go on forever with what i liked about the game. The things i didnt like were stomachable , well cept maybe that death cutscene. maybe theyll patch it to be skippable.
All in all it was a fun game, a good game. But not a game for everyone, especially if you dont know your mythology. I do think some things coulda been fleshed out more and had much more potential than what we were given. And i hope they embrace that in the sequel. IMO it was well worth the money and ill be making many more runs through this game in the days to come to get 1000GS
