Multi-Plat Top 20 Games Of The Decade

Gotta keep in mind that this list was the top 20 most important games, not necessarily the best games.

Just to point this out again. Exactly what I was thinking.

well can someone tell me why WindWaker is on it? I dun really see how it was important, tbh. I can agree with Halo, CoD4, and a lot of the games on the list being important to the decade.. but Windwaker? And even Uncharted 2? Hmmm..

Hurp durp, I can't read.

I'm not sure why Windwaker was on there. The only thing I've got is that it showed not everything in a new generation of games (new then, anyway) has to be superrealisticzomg graphics.

I haven't started Uncharted 2 yet, so I'll get back to you.

It was the 3d cel-shaded graphics, and because it caused such a schism in Legend of Zelda fans at the time.

ah I guess that's true. Ah well, Uncharted 2 though isn't really important though right? It was a damn good game, but did it really do anything important? I guess maybe showing how movie-like a game can be yet also interactive? hmm

Yeah, didn't even think of that. I knew cel-shading existed before WW came out, but I can't think of a fully-immersive 3D environment before it. Not to mention the huge sparks of debate it created with people being extremely against it. Apparently there was no room for cartoony-looking games in the future back in 2003. Which is funny, because no one complained about Viewtiful Joe, which also released in 2003.

Cinematic gaming? I dunno about giving that award to Uncharted, considering the Metal Gear Solid series. And I'm not even singling out the 45-minute cutscene in 3, or however long it was.

They gave a spot for MGS series in there, I forget the number atm but it was MGS2

I think you nailed the number one wtf game on the list. Uncharted 2? What the...

That's because it was *expected* in a cartoony game like Viewtiful Joe (not to mention it was largely a side-scroller, with some 3d elements).

In the Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, LoZ fans were given a tech demo of the Gamecube's GPU in the form of Link fighting an epically-strong Ganondorf, not "Toon Young Link and Aryll fighting Ganondorf the Fat Man".

Keep in mind that I found The Wind Waker a close third behind Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, in terms of sheer fun and replay value (in modern game terms - Link to the Past is still unrivaled by all).

Hm..I'm glad that Half Life 2 made it to the list, but I think it should have been put a little higher..just my opinion though.

As for Morrowind, I played that game a couple of times, and I'd always get killed by some wizard at a bridge who would shoot crap at me and kill me..so I gave up after a while lol.

I did try Oblivion though when my brother had it, and I thought it was just awesome that the world was so big that you could explore and do pretty much whatever you wanted.

I think it's still a mix of just good games and important games. I think Uncharted 2 deserves a spot, but I don't really see the importance in it either. I remember them saying something like the voice acting was really good compared to most games, maybe that? lol

You play it yet?

Yeah and i would never understand why it could be considered important in the last 10 years. Its a great game for sure. What exactly is important about it?

This face is what's important.

I think it's important in that it's the first game I've played that's legitimately comparable with a movie in terms of presentation. It's better to just watch it being played than a lot of bad movies and TV out there. The script is good, the performances are excellent and the presentation is hollywood quality. Obviously, the CG is not on the level of a Pixar movie in terms of the technology, it's being played live not prerendered, but all the artwork is of the same quality.

This is something that's been worked on for a while, and claimed many times before. In a year or two, it will be topped, and it won't be considered important in retrospect. Right now it's important because it's the best at what it does.

This thing might not be considered important by a lot of gamers. To me it's important because I don't really segment entertainment. I like movies, book, games, music, etc. So throw any of that at me in any package and I'm going to enjoy it if it's done well. It's kind of like how Rock Band is good or bad based on how good the music selection is, only Rock Band uses already popular songs so it's already successful in that respect before they even begin.

A lot of people first claimed that games were movie quality in terms of story when FF7 came along. I'd argue that I disagree with that. FF7 was great for its time but it's got a LOT of shit in the story from the script, to plot points, to stupid characters. If FF7 was converted into 20 hour television show, with the gameplay replaced with cutscenes, nobody would watch it.

If Uncharted 2 was converted in a similar way, and it was pre rendered for higher quality, it would be something I'd want to watch, in fact more than those National Treasure movies or the new Indiana Jones. Even if it wasn't prerendered and of the quality it is now, it's good enough to show and be considered decent.

It doesn't mean the gameplay is anything out of the ordinary. It's really good but it's not "important." I'd compare it to like a Halo 3 in terms of gameplay. Absolutely excellent but nothing groundbreaking at all, not even over Halo 2/Uncharted 1.

In terms of the presentation I feel like I'm playing a new level of games. When I beat it I felt similar to when I beat Zelda for N64, some tangible new level that is just a little ahead of its time to be coming again any time soon.

I'm sure every game designer has studied Uncharted 2 in depth and is working on trying to infuse some of that magic into their own storytelling, but I don't think it will be common place until next generation when hopefully the technology is such that the effort can be put into story telling as the graphics and physics will be easier.

You can also say that in terms of presenting writing into video games, Lost Odyssey was important in that in infused its story with these written segments which were really very good. Not good for video games, good for writing which is really my point, to run with the big dogs. The only thing is that while Uncharted 2 is going in a direction that will eventually be all games, Lost Odyssey was something of a one time thing. So it is important in that it will remain unique, but Uncharted 2 advances the medium by raising the standard to the same level for story as any movie or television show.

Of course, it's not an amazing story by movie standards. It's not comparable to watching the Matrix or Pulp Fiction. It's not something I will go to a non-gamer and say "you must watch me play this!" It opened the door though, and it's up to future games to rise to that level.

Not to mention it was one of, if not the only game that made a Gamecube even relevant, imo anyway.

Off-topic: Do you have to play Uncharted to get whats goin on in Uncharted 2?

I think the list was alright, I have no objections to the games on their, simply because they are an opinion, not necessarily fact. I have my own list, and nothing anybody says or does will change my mind about it. :)

I'm with you on this.

What exactly did Uncharted 2 do differently, SP wise, from Gears 2 or hell, even Gears 1? Fire has good points, but they are all opinional. If I prefer Gears I could pose the same argument, but with a fact that my preference came first, therefor should be the one on the list.

Hell, very few games on that list are important, very few. If Uncharted 2 is important for anything it is givin' Gears fans a better fuckin' multiplayer game, you know, where bullets go where they're suppose to for the most part.

I think the list is pretty silly anyways.. But UC2 on the list makes it go from silly to bad. Makes no sense to me and i was reading through your post carefully Fire. I just dont see how any of it matters. The game was JUST released.
