Considering that QCDN has had server tags and has been generally welcoming to all server residents for at least two years, I'd hope that we continued the trend instead of just being server-specific.

What role will the site be playing? Right now QCDN is made primarily for people on the quetz server. Changing the name to not include some kind of server name implies that all servers will be welcome. Is this the direction you intend to take the site in?

I would like the new site to be server orientated, but also with a chance to evolve if given. The thing that made QCDN great was the community around Quetz and if we did move away from one single community I think it would be a bad idea. If we took it away then we'd be going up against sites like alla/bg/ki and it's highly likely we wouldn't make it out on top. Though we're having a name that deviates from a server, we can still subname it a "forum dedicated to the Sephiroth server".

Well yeah they're welcome to stop in and have a chat, but when it comes to forums like event scheduling, auctionhouse, linkshell recruiting, dynamis scheduling, and the flameboard, content is server specific. We'd have to create sub-forums (for each server) much like what we have in the current job discussion forum (for jobs) to accommodate users from all servers if they wanted to be posting in forums like the ones mentioned.

I guess what I'm trying to say is the URL depends (or should depend) largely on how that sort of thing is going to be handled. If all are welcome, then the URLs like EDN.org work fine, but if we're going to keep some forums to Quetz only, then some more thought needs to be put in to it.

I just don't want to see any Quetz residents get alienated should they decide not to join the same "home server" as this site takes.

Who says we have to have an Auctionhouse or Scheduling forum? Likewise, who says it has to be forum-based? There could easily be a single Scheduling forum, and have the server names as tags for new threads, with a disallowance on any thread creation without an associated tag. Same goes for Linkshell recruiting.

I agree, which I guess is why I had thought the URL would remain server specific to some extent.

I agree with this statement and we'll still have the extra forums for the most part which allows for XIV discussions and off topic ones as well. I think we'll still have the server banners as well to have users choose from which would bring that individuality too. But for the events/dynamis?/other things I think it should be server specific.

That's um...a really good idea. :o

Then I think you misinterpret what I said - if we, QCDN FFXIV development team, decides to go with a server-specific site for the new site, we're in effect telling all of QCDN to either join that server or face alienation of some fashion.

Well nobody says that, but they're pretty handy. I'd hate to see them go. I had considered the server tag thing, but I can see that becoming a big problem if the site gets popular, imagine people from 16 servers posting events instead of one. It'll become hard to find an event posting you care about unless we include a way to filter out other servers (ex: click this link, show only postings for Asura) ... that sounds kinda nice actually.

I see, and agree.

Honestly, I think we need to concentrate less on making the FFXIV site into an effective clone of QCDN, and more on how to effectively manage a swath of new users from varying servers, as well as managing users from the QCDN site who played FFXI.

Will there be an immediate need for an Auctionhouse or endgame scheduling at release? I should certainly hope not. Those things will come in due time, as details emerge.

Get the core going, then worry about the subforums and other areas.

Certainly not right away, but planning ahead is usually a good idea. It would suck to get to the point where they're needed and then be like ooooh well I guess we can't do that now. Not without more money anyway. But I think if you combine our ideas (server tags + filter for server tags on thread list) sub-forum creation won't be necessary. We'll just have a ton of traffic :D

Update: I think I just countered my own point. Oh well, it sounds like we agree for the most part, and I just didn't realize it.

There is a way to do this actually. There's some HTML code out there that you can put in a notice tag (forum specific) that will allow you to search for results only based on one prefix (ie Quetz, Midgar, Anal Sex) which would make this option perfect.

what if some members of QCDN aren't going to play FFXIV at all >.>

Yeah because people search for anal sex on qcdn in the first place~

But I'd agree with Tristam on the point that we should prepare to see people joining here from various servers. Actually I don't see why we wouldn't welcome anyone who plays ff11/14 in the first place anyway.

I don't mind various people from other servers, but I would still like for it to be server specific because that's the thing that attracted me to QCDN anyway, it being the only server I know of with it's own specific forum. I don't really want us to become a BG/Alla/KI.

Having people cross servers would be awesome, but seeing other websites that try to do the same, I don't think we'd have to go nuts on that. Not right away anyway. I rarely see "Quetzalcoatl" Server pages on other FFXI sites used frequently. That's because we have QCDN, as I'm sure most servers have their own resident equivalent to QCDN or personal linkshell forums. Still offer it, of course. but more like a lobby meeting area at first. If it really takes off more can always be added as it happens.

You're right on that though. If we have people coming from other servers, it should be a natural thing, not something we tried to do like other websites.

To tell the truth, I have mix feelings on whether we should go full scale or stay server based. In one way, we open up to everyone and have people coming all over the place here. Big party, fun time, ease to get informations and events going. On the other hand, if we stay server based, we're not going to have to deal with the bullshit of 50k people. We got enough of one bluegartr already anyway.

I feel like JP on this one, I got attracted to QCDN because it feels like home with my family and my friends. Bluegartr feels like that weird party where you don't seem to fit most of the time. I don't know how to formulate that seriously but I feel like it would be awesome to expand or user base while we keep that "family" feeling this forum got. Yeah I know, I'm no good with words :(.
