Valkyria Chronicles

I'm definitely pick up this title next year. This game's art direction is amazing. It looks like it was made with watercolours, and it totally works =D

I haven't looked up all the details to be 100% right on this but I'm fairly certain it actually is all watercolored. The name of the engine used in creating this game is Canvas.

I was able to make some progress into the game over the Thanksgiving holiday and I am really impressed with it. I am to the scenario in which:

Spoiler:
I am trying to stop the vehicle, with the kidnapped Princess inside.

I don't know if I played too much over a 1-2 day period and got a little burned out but I haven't been able to motivate myself to come back to it. I'm sure, finally getting around to playing Dead Space has a little bit to do with it as well. :p

Overall, I really enjoy Valkyria Chronicles. I was hopeful that the skirmishes would be more than just running through the old scenarios. The upgrade system is nice and minimizes the potential grinding. I'll certainly have to give it a second playthrough seeing how I missed some of the named enemies and therefore some of the special weapons.

I think I'm going to get this game and dig the time out of my schedule to play it.

Strategy war game... fine, that's nothing new, it is mainly the amazing art that's drawing me in.

You'll be suprised. While it's not 100% new in -concept-, it's very, very, different.

I finally got around to trying the demo last night. I thought the gameplay was great, but the art seemed girly. It looked great, it just felt like I was playing "My Little Army" with tanks instead of ponies.

Meh I am on chapter 10 currently but I think I need to start grinding some. I have every class at level 7 and my Scout class is level 8. Things certainly at times seem very challenging and I use a majority of my turns during scenarios. Would you guys recommend doing skirmish 4 until I have made the majority of my classes Elite?

Oh, and use your orders. They make a huge difference.

I had all of my classes around level 13 durin' that time frame. I liked to keep my level a little above the chapter number and found doin' so kept the game at a great balance. Find a skirmish you can A rank, quickly and easily, and just do that for money and EXP. Everytime I had an upgrade available I made sure to get it. The easiest skirmish to A rank, imo, is the second one you get, where the tank can bust through the wall near your first base, not the base where your tank spawns. I can use one Shocktrooper with the Defense order and get there in one turn and cap the flag. Takes about 3 min. and you get tons of EXP and Money. Just search YouTube for A rank strategies and you'll find it, it's a very popular one to grind.

Well I can A rank skirmish 4 in one round and earn ~26k exp per run. One of my main problems with the game is that I feel like I need to kill the majority of enemies instead of just Scout dashing to the finish. Storywise it usually takes me a majority of the turns because I try to search out the named enemies on the maps and they can be tough. I remember some named sniper that I had to kill with grenades because he'd dodge all my other attacks.

Do not read the spoiler if you care at all about the story.

Spoiler:
Oh my god. They killed Isara... That really bums me out. It made recapturing Bruhl a much bigger event. I'm kind of sad.

In story mode I killed most all enemies, just seemed the best way for my enjoyment. In skirmishes I just do whatever I want. IF I need to XP I'll do that but if I'm playin' for just the sake of playin', I kill everyone.

Ended up getting this game and it's growing on me. I'm on chapter 6 now, and I haven't done any skirmishes yet. Doing fine so far but I'm sure as I continue to advance that I'll need to do them for extra exp/gold.

Me and my buddy cracked this open last night and tried it out on his PS3. I have to say, I absolutely love it. We would have played until dawn if he didn't have to get up early. I don't think I've played a better game ever where you control battle troops. I don't think I'd really describe this a TRPG, at least in play style, it's not well definable onto any specific genre... but it's got elements of RPGs, tactical warfare games, 3rd person shooters and battlefield gams all melded together somehow perfectly. To me it's even a genre creating game, cause there's not been anything like it. It's great when something "new" comes out and it's really good, not just unique.

Hope they expand on it with a sequel - because multiplayer elements would make it one of my favorite games - even if just offline co-op.

Japan already has some DLC so no doubt we'll see more missions and what not.

I agree, the only thing keepin' this game from bein' the best game out, probably ever, is no versus multiplayer, that would blow my mind. I'd probably turn into one of those zombie Korean dudes who dies from to much Starcraft.

Sadly there's not much hope for a sequel; the game's done abysmally in sales.

Really? When I tried to buy it a few weeks or so ago I couldn't fine a copy anywhere. Did they not send out that many copies?

The sales number I heard was ~30,000 copies sold...
