Valkyria Chronicles

Hits tomorrow for the U.S. Been waitin' to long for this, but we all know how SEGA likes to treat everyone not in Japan.

At least they are giving us the DLC despite the game selling rather badly over Christmas.

The game sold more copies than Disgaea 3 (while at $60), nothin' bad about that.

Listen to yourself man... The game sold more then another game that sold horrible.

/facepalm, you missed somethin' or failed to grasp a very easy concept.

You had no point for me to miss. VC sold more then Disgea 3 was your response to VC getting DLC. That makes some sense? Sorry Strid man i dont get you here. Are you using Disgea 3 as some sort of mediocre sales bar?

You didn't miss a point, you missed a whole fuckin' post, no other explanation. I'm not tryin' to compare sales to Halo and Gears, I'm talkin' in target market terms (you don't compare sales with major titles to Niche games, that's just stupid). Anyway, I wasn't even justifyin' why VC got DLC. We were goin' to see DLC whether the game sold a million copies or a few thousand as DLC came out relatively quick after the release in Japan.

Looks like more waitin' for those of us in the U.S. on the DLC :/ Next week now.

The Valkyria Chronicles DLC has been released. Hard Mode, Edy's Mission and Selvaria's Mission, £3.19 each on the UK Playstation Store.

Also, Sales of VC in NA and in Japan have risen at an amazing rate. In Japan, VC was beating out Biohazard 5 (RE5), and in NA, Valkyria Chronicles was in the top 5 charts, just behind Guitar Hero. Needless to say, Sega are greatly pleased.

The sales boost is not any where near what you are thinking. The price was dropped to $30.. And those numbers where VC placed in top 5 are from Amazon.com only. The game has not broken the top 20 in sales for one week yet;; I dont know if i would be pleased as you say Sega is because my game started to sell when it was cut %50 in price. (But you would know Sega is pleased right?)

Its nothing negative... At least the game is selling slow for them now instead of at a dead stop. The way you worded it though one would think it was a real boost..

I will be picking up the content later tonight though!

Allow me to direct you to Sega's own words from their blog.

Valkyria sales are often spoken of in the same sentence as “unfortunate” and “should have been better” - so when news arrives that would actually put the words “Valkyria Chronicles” and “chart topping” together, I figured you guys might want to hear about it.

According to this Gamasutra report (Link below), last week Valkyria Chronicles made quite a comeback, both in Japan and here in North America. Looks like all that evangelical work from the hardcore fans, coupled with the DLC and recent buzz about the game, is boosting Valkyria back up where it should be.

In North America, Valkyria Chronicles jumped last week to top 5 among PS3 game sales, back on the list at #5, and behind only titles like Guitar Hero and Killzone 2. Considering the game came out last November, it’s an excellent sign that DLC, continued support from SEGA, and amazing support from all the Valkyria fans truly can have a great effect on game sales. Props to all you evangelists who are telling your friends and fellow PS3 owners to pick it up - you have made a difference!

The biggest success story, however, is in Japan - at a cheaper budget price for their re-heat of the title, it makes me extremely happy to announce that according to the Gamasutra info, Valkyria Chronicles was the highest selling game on amazon - period - in Japan last week, beating out the likes of Resident Evil 5 (Biohazard in Japan) and other blockbusters, and nestling in nicely on the same top 5 list as Yakuza 3, which ranked fifth. (Nice work to our counterparts in Japan!)

It’s good to finally see some great news for a game that truly deserves it. Here’s to hoping the game continues to see increased sales and support across the globe - thanks again to all of you in the community who help spread the word!

PlayStation 3
North America: 1. Killzone 2 (SCEA), 2. Resident Evil 5 (Capcom), 3. MLB 09: The Show (SCEA), 4. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Bundle (Activision), 5. Valkyria Chronicles (Sega).

Japan: 1. Senjou no Valkyria -- PlayStation 3 the Best (Sega), 2. BioHazard 5 (Capcom), 3. Demon's Souls (SCEI), 4. Musou Orochi Z (Koei), 5. Ryu ga Gotoku 3 (Sega).

So yeah, Sega are pleased and It was an amazing rise in sales. Yes the data was from amazon, but it's the only place I can actually find the sales data from. I doubt April's NPD or whatever will reveal anything.

Please Gerry. How could the company be pleased their game only sells decently at a 50% discount. Would you be happy your product only sold on the clearance rack? VC doesnt deserve abysmal sales but its what its getting.

The game was in 25th place in Japan overall sales wise the same week these Amazon numbers are taken. So it shows you amazon numbers mean nothing. 25th place in Japan but first on their Amazon sales... I understand its all you could find. How about dont share it till its a relevant number.

I would like to see a sales increase but all we will see really is a 50% sale price drive the remaining copies out of your store... Then there are no more.

EDIT: Meh you know what. Thinking it over i dont care about its sales.. I got my copy.

Gotta remember, Sega is talking about #5 of PS3 games, not games overall.

I'm thinking from Sega's perspective, sales indicate their willingness to greenlight a sequel. The sequel would be sure to sell more considering the quality of the original. It will make a bigger splash.

You're still lookin' at it the wrong way. I wont repeat myself again though. I will say this, you don't spawn an anime, manga, and sequel talks over "abysmal sales".

I wonder if SEGA was replaced with Atlus or NIS if it would help...

Strid, what you quoted from me and my last few posts have had nothing to do with a sequel. I dont even understand what you just posted again. Are you saying the sales for VC are good? I am trying to correct what Gerry posted. He just posted VC was in top 5 sales and behind "Big name games".

In reality it was just Amazons numbers, which are irrelevant..

VC really is sitting at the 25 spot in sales in Japan, and thats from the same time period of Amazons numbers.

As Fire just mentioned, which i had missed, its only comparing to Amazons PS3 sales not games overall..

And the "Big name games" named here are all at the down side of their sales.

With those 3 its clear the way Gerry worded it was more wishfull thinking then anything else.

Now as for a sequel.. I would like to see one also Strid. Please inform me why abysmal sales which lead to a game being discontinued then dropping to 50% off and finally moving units but not at any impressive pace merrits a sequel. Explain that to me without loving VC and just going off what i said.

I am all for a sequel and if Sega is willing to make it, great. Maybe people will pay attention to the second installment.

I think people's overall point is that it's sales are not so bad considering what its expectations might have been.

It's very original in gameplay design, it's got a very unique art style. As frustrating as that is, it's bad for sales as a first iteration. It's a new IP that needed to take a hit to get itself out there and known. This is a JRPG, made by SEGA. They aren't Square, they aren't even Namco, they have no RPG fanbase, especially in the US.

This game had beautiful artwork and was definitely a cut above, from a production standpoint, your average JRPG. It wasn't however, Killzone 2. It didn't have that kind of resources put into it, and it didn't need to be a million seller. It also didn't have the huge advertising budget, which is for some of the big games, bigger than the budgets of these smaller games entirely

That is to say, calling it a failure sales wise is.... compared to what? It's at about 370k right now. This is a new IP, and it's something of a new subclass of an already niche rpg.

Yet they're making DLC, anime and collectibles line.. feels to me like they're trying to build a brand here from the ground up. I'm not saying VC2 would be a million seller, but I bet that it would get enough buzz that it'd be a solid 600k seller, especially since it'd be out after FF13 which would get some JRPG fans PS3s. I also bet VC2 can get made cheaper than 1 by reusing the same engine and requiring minimal tech updates, just more content.

Compare it to Disgaea 3 for example... believe it or not, D3 had the advantage going in. They were a known IP, and in this niche world, they had the advantage of having a fanbase. VC had to build one. I mean, yeah, Disgaea 3 had a smaller budget, production wise. But they had actual coverage too from the gaming media before and when it came out. VC had some mentions after the fact by with whistful sighs, "that was a great game we ignored to make our 12th redundant article on Lara Croft's boobs." Yet Disgaea 3 had sales somewhere in the low 200k-300k range. Which means they got sales from fans with the system, they didn't grow the IP. So VC actually accomplished something, though I'm sure D3 was more profitable after all costs are factored.
