Warhammer Online

Here you can sorta see what I was talking about with the siege of a battle keep going on.

Firing from the walls:

The dwarf to the right of the screenshot is dumping flaming oil on the enemy as they attempt to batter down our gates.

Ground level, pushing them away from our gates:

Enemy is retreating back to their war camp (which is relatively close to this particular keep) to regroup.

Leaving my war camp and entering the woods could be dangerous...and the game warns me that I am now a target in the ongoing realm vs realm struggle:

Scenario pvp. Here, you are teleported to a particular realm map (depending on which tier of which lands you are hunting in at the time of entry. This is me in my skirmish stance, kiting and firing on the run to save my squishy ass from getting beat on:

This is a tier 2 empire scenario, for example, in which you need to grab a flag on top of the middle platform and carry it to 3 locations around the map. By doing so, your realm scores points. There's obviously a ton of pvp encounters along the way and the first to 500, or highest score after 15 minutes wins.

You earn regular rank exp (levels), renown exp (pvp levels), and money from these scenarios. You can also win loot in these scenarios, dropped from player kills randomly. Players cannot have their personal items taken from them, but class specific loot and potions can drop randomly from pvp'd players in these arenas.

I received a level 25 shadow warrior's breastplate this evening when I managed to take out a sorceror 1 vs 1. I'm not yet sure if a 1v1 kill (the game tracks all kinds of stats each match, i'll post a screeny of the menu later) is what triggers when/what loot drops or if it can fall anywhere, but everyone on your team can need/greed/pass the items that drop.

Anaeran thank you so much for putting these up!

Np. I know what it's like to be eagerly anticipating a game launch haha

I'll try to get some more shots up here today. I'll play some of the other classes too- for both realms- so everyone can get a look at what they may want to play.

Also, open beta applicants check your email. Preview weekend is this weekend and some open beta folks received invites. This is likely the start of the stress testing phase of beta, so I'm thinking you will be able to roll on our closed servers if you got the invites.

All NA CE and 50k SE pre orders got into Preview weekend, GOA have fucked off to GC Leipzig so we'll not here anything here for a while. Even though the German CM said 2 days ago that they'd have a press release yesterday with "2 concrete dates". Hopefully they are beta centre opening and client download for us, and we'll get them next week.

Give Chosen and Magus a whirl please ;). I'm still undecided which one I want to play.

I downloaded the open beta, and I'm on for the preview weekend, but is there a reason I can't get past the patch screen? I'm assuming it's because they haven't bothered to allow me access to the patch servers yet.

I'm assuming the same thing too. I've downloaded the open beta for the preview weekend and can't get past the patch screen either.

Probably won't let you patch until closer to the weekend unveiling.

edit: servers are also down atm for maint, though i doubt that is the reason you can't patch yet.

I had heard that Melee DPS were useless as of right now. Hopefully it gets fixed before launch because I wanted to be a Witch Hunter (looks) lol.

I got into preview weekend. I am pretty excited. I am glad I did because I need to see how well my comp runs warhammer, and if I need any upgrades.

I am just hoping for not to much lag during RvR, that would suck!!!

some friends and myself are rolling destruction, anyone else want to roll with us PM me or post here.

Only e-mail I've received is about the changes to the BTA. I have a CE pre-order, with codes and still haven't been able to get any information about preview weekend or when open beta starts.

Did you input the beta code that came with your CE on the betacenter webpage?

New cinematic is spiffy.

I have to wonder tho'... given the number of times they've shown the Dwarf Slayer (original cinematic, tapestry in the new one), I'm surprised they didn't use that for the Dwarf DPS class. I wouldn't be overly surprised to see it enter the game as a new class at some point in the future.

There were a lot of other classes that didn't make the cut that I understood why (Dark Elf Assassin, Empire Engineer/Greatsword/Flagellant, High Elf Dragon Knight, Orc Weirdboy, etc), but the Dwarf Slayer just seemed like such an obvious choice.

Since I'm bored waiting to go out to dinner, don't feel like doing Campaign, and Reya is playing her crazy card game, hmm... What would be my predictions for future faction job classes... This is me geeking out horribly btw, since I've played these games longer than some of the current players have been alive.

Wood Elves: Waywatcher as ranged DPS obviously. Wardancer for melee DPS seems likely. Other than that though... Nothing all that incredibly conducive to the tank role, and the support role would just be a reworked version of the High Elf Mage class.

Undead: Undead would be a tricky faction to make, since there are at least three sub-factions within that grouping. Vampire Counts, Khemri, and Nagash. Necromancer would be the obvious support class, for VC and Nagash anyway, as would Wights/Grave Guard for tanking. You'd probably want to avoid the whole issue with Vampires, since they're ridiculously powerful in Warhammer anyway. Melee DPS is a bit trickier, I suppose you could go with some kind of Wraith for that. Khemri classes are just messy, since that entire army is basically just low-level animated dead and a few big constructs lead by mummies.

Other Chaos Factions: Tzeentch is fun and all, but Khorne is so much more savage, after all. Probably just re-iterate the existing Chaos classes, though Khorne would have to find a new Support and Ranged classes. Or just do away with them entirely, it is Khorne after all.

Bretonnia: Pretty standard, Knight Errant or Grail Knight for tank, Sorceress for support, more Knights for melee DPS. Kind of a boring faction for me, since their whole schtick revolves around mounted combat in the first place. Again, no good ranged class leaps to mind.

Lizardmen: Now this would be vaguely interesting to see. Skinks Priests for support, mebbe Chameleon Skinks for ranged, Saurus for tanking/melee DPS roles. A Kroxigor might be interesting, but I'm not sure how big they want to make player characters, and things of that nature would be tricky to balance.

Ogre Kingdoms: See Kroxigor. Aside from that... Pretty straightforward. Ironguts for tanking, Butchers for support, Hunters for DPS, and Leadbelchers for ranged most likely. The Ogre mechanics would probably be among the most interesting to write for support and ranged though.

Skaven: Ah, Skaven. If these guys don't get added to the game (assuming it's successful, of course) at some point, I'll be very sad. Stormvermin for tanking, Engineer or Gray Seer for support, Poison Wind Globadiers or some variant might be interesting for ranged, and... hmm... I suppose Assassins or some variant for melee DPS.

Chaos Dwarfs: I have no idea. These guys get left out of whole editions of the game sometimes, so it's hard to actually care what happens to them. I doubt we'll ever see them as a playable faction anyway.

Odds & Ends: I wouldn't be surprised if some of the aforementioned factions, and other lesser factions, don't get a full range of jobs if/when they get added anyway. I can see each one just adding one or two jobs to the mix, just to shake things up and make people level new classes. Ditto for expanding the existing factions; The Empire has access to 7 other lores of magic (8 if you count Kislev) after all, their own Engineers (who are much more... ambitious than their Dwarf counterparts) and so on. In fact, that would probably be the best way to handle the other Chaos factions really. Just add a Khorne Berserker or something along those lines, a Slaanesh whatever, and a Nurgle plague-thingy. It wouldn't be too bad to make the classes added a bit on the variable side either, able to handle a variety of roles depending on the specific build.

Maybe they will use the Dwarf Slayer instead of Hammerer? Thing is, they have 25 years of IP to work with, and they have to make some pretty hard choices on what they can logically include that won't break gameplay, they have to work very carefully with balancing WAR as they will have over 24 classes in the end, even more with Expansions hopefully.

Aye, I forsee a long, long list of classes assuming the game is successful. I've been involved in Warhammer (and pretty much every other game from GW) for about 17 years now, and the game has a hell of a lot of background to offer. I'm sure the tough part for the dev team was knowing when to stop, really.

Of course, if you really want to see me geek out over something, you'll have to wait until the beta starts for the hypothetical 40K MMO. I fear for the future of that title, since sci-fi MMOs haven't historically done all that well, but if they can manage to pull it off, it'll give new meaning to the phrase "epic in scope".

A 40k MMO shouldn't be done IMO, its done well sticking to Real Time Stratagies with Dawn of War, and if you want to push it, you could use the warhammer 40k IP to make a squad based tactical first person shooter.

Should or shouldn't is largely irrelevant, seeing as how it's currently in development, lol. Though who knows what will happen in the next year or so...

It's just going to be somewhat worrisome to see how they handle the primary failing of sci-fi RPGs, namely that ranged attacks are the primary method of combat. The MMO/FPS games just irritate the piss outta me. If I wanted to play a FPS, there are almost always better options, and frankly, I don't like first person shooters. I prefer my games to incorporate more strategy than twitch response and direction sense.

40K at least has the virtue that the game includes a wide variety of close-combat options and a heavy melee element to it. The trick is going to be balancing it out so that primarily ranged classes don't just rape everything they come across. I can't imagine how they intend to actually accomplish that, though. Short of putting the entire game into a heavily enclosed environment (like a hive city) so that there aren't any long sight lines, and giving some pretty beastly move advantages to the melee classes.

I like Tyranids :3

250+ point carnifexs make me giggle

on a side note...

Raes and I are watching the south park episode where they make the biggest poops... and he is laughing so hard he is tearing up.... wtf is with guys and poop?! ><;

What I dont understand is why the Empire doesn't have a mirrior class to the Chosen from Chaos. Priest, Ironbreaker, nor Witchhunter can take him down. Hell a Chosen can tank 3 MDPS classes :/

Kinda unbalanced on that perspective. Bright Wizard while really powerful, still fall pretty quickly. DoK are super tough too.
