California teen gives birth in shower, walks to hospital

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A 17-year-old girl gave birth secretly at home, then walked four blocks to a hospital with the baby still attached by its umbilical cord.

"I was just a little nervous" when the labor began, Xochitl Parra said Friday from St. Mary Medical Center as she cradled her 8-pound, 3-ounce son, Alejandro.

The boy was normal and "eating like a champ," said Dr. Jose Perez, director of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The teenager said she was alone and taking a shower around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday to get ready for school. Then the contractions took over.

"I felt his head coming, so I sit down and pushed so he could come out," she said.

Parra did not call 911 because the home phone was disconnected, and she did not want to wake the neighbors because it was so early. Instead, she wrapped the baby, got dressed and went to the hospital on foot.

"I started walking and jogging to the hospital," she said.

The teen came into the hospital lobby and asked for help, Perez said.

"She still had the placenta and the baby was still attached, so of course everyone said, 'Don't move!'" he said.

Perez praised the girl for taking quick action.

"They could have bled to death; thank God that didn't happen," the doctor said. "She was very clever. She knew what to do. She wrapped the baby up and walked over here."

Parra, a sophomore at Long Beach Poly High, said she had kept her pregnancy a secret because she was afraid her mother would "kick me out of the house." Her mother has now accepted the situation and is going to help the teen care for the baby so she can continue attending school, Parra said.

Perez called the outcome "heartwarming."

"We hear so much negative with teenagers throwing their babies in the Dumpsters," he said. "This baby is fine, and hopefully there will be a happy ending with the extended family."

Why does this story not suprise me?

More importantly, what doctor says "Eating like a champ"?

If my doc ever said that to me, I'd be forced to switch care immediately.

I think the more important issues is that a sophomore in high school was 9 months pregnant, wtf is that. If youre gonna have sex, at least wear a condom.

Exactly how do you carry a pregnancy to birth and manage to keep it a secret from your parents? Are they fucking blind?

Big girl to begin with? A woman that worked in a store near my house didn't know she was pregnant once until she was 5 months into it lol

I agree. She could have saved herself all that trouble by not getting pregnant =/

I don't get this exactly...isn't there that once a month visit from aunt Flow that kind of gives it away?

Sometimes a woman's cycle doesn't always happen once a month, because ovulation does not take place in the approximate day its supposed to in the cycle. This is usually seen in girls that are under a lot of stress, are putting their body under physical stress or in the first two years of their first period because their body is still regulating hormones . It happens to women athletes, and also occurs in women who suffer from eating disorders. Other times its genetic =/ like me. If I'm not on the pill, my cycle is totally out of whack.

Sophmore is 14-15 y/o? Girl's a ho; but now the whole world knows she at least puts out. Easier for her to get dates. She did the wrong thing as now her and the child are at risk to infection. She shoulda just got the neighbors to drive her or use their phone to call 911. Or asked them to call 911 and deliver the baby there. Either way; she had much to risk. Of course, if she made the right decisions then she would have remained abstinant.

She is 17. I was confused at first about a 17 year old sophomore. I was a freshman in college at 17.

But you are correct at how she put herself at a huge risk. It things like this that make you wonder what runs through some peoples' minds.

I just figured if she was a sophmore in high school and 17, I bet you she'd made a lot of poor decisions in her life other than the "Some guy who won't be there for me if I get pregnant can put that dick in me" decision.

OH! I get you now lol

lol Yea. I asked a question and made no relative statement to show which direction I was going with it. my bad >.>

btw, sign up for qcdn fitness LS forum thingy.

I did, but waiting on acceptance. I think Arc didn't like my reason for wanting to join lol

Everyone is saying how it's so amazing she walked to the hospital etc etc. Ultimately it was stupid. She was extremely lucky everything went well. It wasn't a courageous thing, she was hiding it from her family, and instead of facing the mistakes she made and living up to it she took the cowardly way to hide everything.
In my opinion she just went from making stupid, selfish mistakes... to just plain stupid and selfish in general.
