What anime are you watching/reading?

Just started watching Gurren Lagann. I've only watched up to the 4th episode and I'm surprised at how awesome it is already.

Though.. I'm bothered that there's no English voice acting. I bought it from Best Buy today and was a bit surprised that there was no English option on the audio ..options. It's not a huge problem because ..for the most part I can keep up with the dialog in Japanese. It just struck me as odd to be brought over and sold in the states and there not be English voice acting.

There are english dubs on TV. You could prolly download those episodes from somewhere.

Well it's not like I -need- to watch the show in English. It's just that I thought the dvds would have that option.. naturally. Every anime dvd I've ever bought has had an English or Japanese audio track, so it just strikes me as odd this one didn't.

Thankfully I'm used to watching anime in Japanese thanks to Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden. I enjoy English dubs and English subs, so I'll manage.

Ya, it's odd that they don't have that either. Since their is both Audios you'd assume they'd be on the DVDs.

I will also note that ...whoever fucking did the subtitles needs to be fired and go back to fucking school.

Second time (that I've noticed) where there's a word that's missing a letter. There's bound to be a lot more considering this is only dvd 1 of 6. -_- I swear, Bandai Entertainment or Aniplex.. who ever is responsible for this needs to get their shit straight. How the hell do you sell a dvd that you pretty much have to watch with subtitles and have fuck ups on the words?? I mean, damn, I know they're speaking fast but that's no excuse to just be lazy. I guess they don't look at their own merchandise before it hits store shelves to make sure there aren't simple screw ups like this.

"Thse little things won't kill you, you big baby!" says Yoko as she's fighting with Kamina in the cockpit of Lagann at the beginning of episode 5.

The other screw up was on a simple word too. I just don't see how such a simple error couldn't be fixed before the final product went to stores. Bah. *grumbles and goes back to watching the show*

That's my problem with most "official" subs. They often seem worse than the fansubs. Not to mention they loose any feel for the character and turn everything in to prim and proper english.

There are very good reasons why companies do that.

Official subtitles have to follow specific guidelines where every letter counts.
The subtitles may contain no more then 36 letters per line over 2 lines and the subtitles have to be in sight long enough for slow readers to read.
Placing them at a limit of no more then 140 words a minute.
Putting honorifics in there is wasting space they need for that 'proper english translation'.

Fansubbers aren't bound by those guidelines and can do whatever they want.
So most of them do just that.
Which results in subtitles that feel more 'complete', but aren't always readable for everyone.

As for the mistakes, unfortunately the editors do not want to pay the quality checkers, nor give them any credit.
So there's hardly anyone that wants to do that job.
I used to do that for a Dutch company a couple of years ago, but I quit because they didn't even want to put in my name in the ending credits for the 2 hours of work I needed per episode to fix those mistakes.
You can say that the translators should be paying more attention then, but tell me.
Do you see clear when you've worked on one episode for 6 hours?

That wasn't really what I was gettin' at. What bothers me most is that not many people speak "formal" English. I don't say, and can't re-call, the last time I heard someone say, "I do not know." Normally I say or hear, "I dunno" or "I don't know". Now, if I say it like that, Naruto definitly doesn't say, "I do not know". A bit simplistic but I think you can get my point. It would also slim down on word usage hence shortenin' line length.

Perhaps I can shed a light on why they do it in that proper way.
A lot of the anime they license is sold outside of the US.
Countries like mine where English is not a native language and a lot of people that understand english have trouble with the gramar.

Do not is in that case more understandable then don't.
Aside from the non-native english speakers, also people with Dyslexia have an easier time understanding 'do not' then they have 'don't'.

Anyway my conclusion to keep this thread from derailing even further:
The official translators and subbers are bound by countless rules, regulations and guidelines which the fansubbers do not have to follow.
My beef with most fansubbers however is that they translate from interpretation instead of translating word for word like the translators at the companies get paid to do, so the actual translation of a quite a bit is wrong.
We just don't see it because we do not speak nor understand enough of Japanese to actually know it is wrong.
However if we'd want to continue this discussion might I suggest making another thread or go PM/VM?

Metabots is fucking badass. i love that show.

I watched it when I was younger and totally forgot about it. I never got to see it all the way through. I'm damn excited.

Actully on the honorifcs note thats one of the reasons I hated watching gunslinger girl anime is that they used them in a anime thats set in Italy. The lack of honorifics is why I enjoyed noir so much.

Finished watching Gurren Lugann a few days ago and I just have to say holy crap it was awesome from start to finish. I completely love the fact that it has an ending that pretty much wraps up everything and gives you a sense of what happens later on.

Spoiler:
Still, when it happened so early in the series.. I did not expect Kamina to die. I thought for sure he was a main character throughout the whole series. LOL.. I was wrong.

Now I'm watching Ergo Proxy, seems like an interesting anime so far. Very dark themed, visually and plotwise so far. I've watched the first several episodes and the story is interesting.

He is a catalyst. A damn fine one at that.

Fantastic show. I watch it about once every month or two since I bought it a while back. I still don't "get" it completely but every time I watch it I figure somethin' else out. It's the only anime I like the dub equally to the sub. Liam O'brien is amazin' in this show. The only thing I don't like is both version paint a different story, on some bits, but it adds to the experience as well. The Japanese version is more cut and dry and makes the English version look like more or less an Ergo Proxy remix. I'll warn you, when you get to around episode 18 or 19 just clear your schedule and watch the rest in one go. There are more plot twist, explanations, it's just a totally new ballgame for the home stretch. That run gives me chills every time I watch it. I've searched long and hard for an anime as smart and great as Ergo Proxy but there isn't one that comes close so savor it.

Its been a long time since I watched Ergo Proxy, seeing as I downloaded the fansubs when it was airing in Japan, but that show was definitely good.

Currently I am watching, not a whole lot actually XD, Skip Beat! is pretty damn funny, but still a shoujo manga turned anime.

As far as reading goes, take your pick lol I keep up with a lot of fan scanlated manga from http://www.onemanga.com

Started D.Gray-Man a few days ago as something to put off studying for finals. Really enjoying it, only a few chapters away from being caught up.

I've got to say though, it's one of those most confusing mangas I've ever read when it comes to figuring out what the hell is going on during battle scenes.

Started watching Rosario+Vampire yesterday. A little cheesy, but who doesn't like blood sucking wenches with many many upskirt shots?

Read the manga a bit as well. It's equally as cheesy with nearly as much upskirt shots. A japanese boys' fetish.

Trust me when I say this, the anime for Rosario Vampire is SHIT!

It took out everything that made the manga so good and took a crap on it. Seriously, for one thing the anime only used probably less than 1/3 of the plot from the manga, and when the 2nd season came round, they COMBINED parts of the first manga with the second manga to make it a complete MESS!

You'd be better off reading the manga because it's got some actual depth to it aside from the fetishes. That said

Mizori-chan is so adorable~~~~~!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't mind her stalking me every day X3

In all honesty, I don't mind either of them. Not NEARLY as good as say.. Bleach.. Naruto.. Code Geass (etc..) But thats solely my opinion.

And yes. <3 Mizoriiii! Love it when you put her and her mother together. Funny shit.
