what is this person thinking?

Where is the skill?

You told me about this skill to SC, what about an SC is so skillful?

You have to wait 4 seconds after the first person weapon skills before you weapons skill. It's tough Meeze... Real tough.

Its not timing the SC's, its executing the entire thing, SC with MB with correct affinity and correct spells...

I think peoples definition of skill is being slightly skewed... Like what someone said earlier, there are NMs/HNM's that are NORMALLY taken down with alliances or parties that can also be taken down by parties or a couple people... This isnt mainly because their gear is better, but mainly because they know what theyre doing, which is skill.

You mean the hard part is saying "Mistral Axe > Shark Bite MB Thundaga" is the hard part? Cause basically thats all you need, each melee's WS and the spell the BLM is going to use. Then you do it over and over again until the party ends. Again, where is the skill?

And I have taken down "alliance" NMs with small groups of people, I hit utsusemi when it was down, my WHM hit flash when I was putting up Ichi etc, basic shit that everyone should know....although from personal experiece, people don't know to do some things, I just call that retarded, not unskilled.

To beat a Dead Horse Again!

Not to beat a dead horse but I think I will. I do not see how anyone can say that this game does not require skill (Yes Antor I have read your – any monkey can do this arguments). To me however, the jobs you play determine the SKILL required.

The reasons some parties (level dependent) average from 4k~20k an hour and others average from 1k~5k is because they have both great or bad gear and great or bad SKILL.

MP efficient Mages have to have the skill required to know what/when to cast. They need to know when to heal during fights to maximize MP without killing someone.

Pulling Brds need to get there timing down perfectly so that they can keep all songs up at all times and still have mobs waiting to be killed by the PT. This does not take rocket science but it takes a decent amount of skill.

Ninja/Paladin Shadowing Casting/Curing also takes a decent amount of skill for both of those jobs. Just read the 50-million Flameboard threads that talk about shitty Ninjas. For the most part they are not being flamed for bad gear.

I understand your mentality of RL > Virtual World thought of skills but I still see it as a flawed argument. Just because this is 10100’s doesn’t mean that it requires any less skills. If you want to improve your ability’s whether in the Real World or in FFXI, it takes concentration, dedication, desire, drive, commitment and a few other things – same for both worlds.

I personally do not talk with anybody while I PT because I am either playing Ninja, Thief or Bard. Granted these jobs do not require a God-like skill equal to a RL Indy Car driver, American Football Player, Neural Surgeon but they still take up most of my concentration because I am either counting shadows, switching gear sets depending on the acc of the mob, watching hate and trying to control it, casting songs, pulling mobs and a plethora of other things in this game that if I do not concentrate on makes me an “uh OK” player instead of what I strive to be “Great Player”. I am not saying that I am a great player just that I am improving my skills – YES my SKILLS – so that I can become one.

Antor I do not know you and I do not have a problem with you – I am just curious what jobs you have past lvl 40 or 50. If you are basing all your thoughts on skill (post level 50) for FFXI on warrior then I would try out other jobs and see the difference. Also watching people effortlessly play job does not mean it requires no effort/skill.

again, I didnt say any of it was hard... You are 'putting words in my mouth,' as it were.

Look at the definition of 'skill.'

Skill is your performance based off of your experience. So nearly every part of FFXI requires skill.

Yeah, they are simple things, but its like clock work. If one person makes a mistake, even a small mistake, it could screw everything up. Not screwing up is that persons skill at what they do. Its not retarded, its just knowing more about what they do...

Take someone who majors in physics and calculus, and then someone who doesnt quite understand how either of those, yet... That isnt retarded.

No, Im not saying FFXI is like physics or calculus, but I know if I said "take someone who knows their ABC's, and someone who doesnt know them yet..." Well... Draw your own conclusions on that one.

I've tanked Ultima without dying, I've also died many times.

I've sat there petrified for 45 secs while I got beat. Did I think that the WHM was unskilled? No, I thought they were a fucking idiot. I repeatedly said "stoned" "petrified", "stona" etc, but I never got it. It was the worst Ultima I was ever in, but I didn't call it lack of skill.

There are very few things I consider skillful in this game, and I play probably the most technical job in the game.

Now, I have a pretty inflated ego, but it has more to do with gear I own than to the way I hit ctrl 1.

LOL, FF is like a PHD in communications:

"Say 'hi'."
"hi"

OK, you here is your PHD.

I would just say "Skill" has a somewhat relatable, but overall different definition between many people

No, it's really not. It's something an eight year old could do without trouble. Shit, when SCs actually were the standard, the vast majority of the time it was Distortion and the blm MBs ice. It's not rocket science. 2005 was not some magical mystery time and 2007 is not tainted with the touch of the cannon. Everyone makes more exp now, be happy.

SC = SkillChain, duh?

Skill applies to everything, from tying your shoes to rebuilding a complex do-hickey. It's something you get better at by doing. If it requires no skill then you'll do it just as well the first time you try as the hundredth.

I'm a little confused...

Are you saying you are just as good a player now as the first day you played FFXI? Because I remember yelling at my screen when my toon wouldn't move :/

yeah, people can say all day that the game requires no skill, but if they rewind straight to their newbie days, theres a 100% chance that they will not play as effectively as they do now, in any situation.

ROFL! I yelled at my screen, too! I hadn't thought about that in a long time...

I didn't know how to sort items at all, so things were dropping and I was thinking 'WTF my shit is broken..' So I asked a passing dragoon and he was kind enough to notify me that crystals fed Wyverns. So he taught me to sort my inventory and in return I traded all of my Fire, Earth and Water crystals to him in thanks and so he could feed his lil' blue iguana. Yeah, I'd like to say I'm a little more advanced than back then...

Because Vana'diel has a shortage of earth crystals :)

LMFAO! My personal favorite newb moment was when I purchased a quiver of arrows at the auction house, bought a stack of arrows to put in the quiver, and then dropped the quiver because I couldn't figure out how to equip it. <_<;;

No one in normal parties is stupid enough to hold their TP to SC anymore... even with a BLM. It'll always result in less exp/hr. Sure, it is beneficial to SC if you have 95% TP, someone uses a WS, and you hit again thus getting 100% TP and use your strongest WS to create a SC, sicne that speeds it up. But those are "accidental".

SC's are useless for anything but certain events, such as Jailer of Love. And even then you can do without.

Apparently a Weaponskill takes skill to execute ;P
