Why is the PS3 a fail?

I dont quite see digital downloading "replaceing" physical media. Even with storage devices being cheep, you would still need a bitchload to cover all the movies that most people own. I have over 700 DVDs which at todays standard of 1.5GB a movie is over 1000GB of dataspace i'd need.

While i believe it'll come forward in the same way Itunes did with music downloading, it'll never replace physical media.
Actually, digitial storage is already replacing physical media in some places. For movies, all you need is a MAX; it'd work just the same for games, just the need for it isn't there yet. It's expensive now since it's a new technology, but then that really shouldn't stop you.

As Tag already said in one of the other threads, they're using up a lot of space because they're not bothering with any kind of compression or efficiency. That's unfortunately a bad habit to get in to, and it'll hurt them later if they don't learn resource management.

Oh no, Don't agree with Tagrineth, he's fulled by negative energy that makes him cough up rubbish. Compression is still a priority when making games. It helps with load times and what not. Take Gear of War for instance, as mentioned in that post Firestreak showed us, the game is beautiful, but it could have been so much more better. If that was able to be stored on an HD DVD, they would not have to make cuts, and believe me, if you read up on the making of GoW, they have to cut out some levels and other things to make the game fit on a DVD9. Short game at that.

PC games made for a Blu Ray Rom is what PC gamers really want. Trust me.

Developers Being efficient on Blu-Ray disc is magic, and the day we see a game released on a dual layer Blu-Ray (game exceeding 25 gigs) we'll know we're in for a special treat.

Yeah, eventually space would become a problem(so would storage space if you bought that many actual discs), but 120 gigs is a pretty small hard drive today; hell they could even sell "attachments" of external hard drives to throw on.

Oh, and HDL 0.8b rocks.

HDL + Winhiip (' ')v

Gears of War is fucking 6.5GB, they have about 2GB of breathing room still if they'd wanted to put that much more content in the game. Most of the limitations of what the put in Gears of War is related more to the 360's RAM and the amount of time they had to develop and polish the game.

It's part 1 of a trilogy.

And yes, Compression is still important, unless you're Hideo fucking Kojima who's desperate to have useless uncompressed audio clogging up the disc!

The problem isn't that they "aren't bothering" with compression (lolz), it's that they aren't trying quite as hard as they would if they had a smaller medium. I'm fairly sure Resistance could've been fit comfortably on 2 DVDs if they'd tried.

Gears of War has low compression textures. That less efficient attribute to the finished project is what makes most of the game in general. Read the developers comment, and then explain why they cut out some levels.

-Their sacrifice lead to loosing 2 gigs
-The game was made in an increadably short period of time
-It was also a low budget game (10M to develop) Even with a larger budget making Gears of War 2 to be much better is not an easy task. They will have to leave out more ideas.

The game is mini compared to Resistance, which is 14 GiGs all compressed on a single layer Blu Ray. There is enough space on a Resistance Disc to fit Gears or War and still have 5 Gigs left over. Lets not even get into dual layer Blu Ray.

-What ? Did MGS fail to deliver hours upon hours or audio ?
-Was MGS too short ?

Did Hideo himself not say it is possible to port MGS4 to the XboX 360 which sparked those roumors and speculation that MGS4 may just be a multiplatform release, which would mean MGS4 would end up on DVD9 ? The Answer is yes he did say that it is possible.

Resistance is compressed, damnit go read and show me a PS3 game that is not compressed before you make you're silly assumptions. If you were in the feild you'd get bish slapped and fired for even suggesting a PS3 game go as a dual DVD set. DVD !

And no, Resistance in it's compressed form as it is, will not fit on 2 DVDs. DVD9's sure, but screw that.

I don't buy that unless they're the shitty movies that no one wants anyways, they're used, or just on a massive sale to actually get high-def DVD's to actually sell. Looking here they're all $25 or higher, most are 30+.

Naw check this out...

http://www2.warnerbros.com/main/shopper/shopper.html?frompage=wb_homepage

This is WB webpage.

Go down to the "DVD shop" at the bar at the bottom.

Where it says "Title" click it and then go to format, blu-ray. Then click on the "go" button.

Click on any of the many 20 dollar blu-ray titles for sale.(a lot of good ones in there like lethal weapon 1 and 2, full metal jacket, superman 1 and 2).

Enter coupon code: WBNews

Then... hit the back button on your browser, and an automated customer service pops up. They give you another few bucks off...

Your Price $14.36

Now you can say... that's just some temporary deal... but.... at any given time, one or more of these deals is going on. Like here's buy.com...

http://www.buy.com/retail/specialty_store_6b.asp?loc=64274

Many of them are 10 dollars off: We've got Terminator 1 for 15 bucks right there at the front page.

Right when those deals started, Amazon's deal had just ended, where they were giving you half off on everything from 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures and Magnolia Pictures... so yeah, I've been populating my collection with Blu-rays as they pass in 15 dollar sales...

The deals are easy to find too, I just check blu-ray news sites.

So it sounds like my third reason was right, they're just trying to actually get them to move so they can start building up a market share. It might be beating out HD-DVD, but it's not doing "well."

Anttaru, I use HDL Dump because winhiip had some problems for me, it would keep fragmenting my drive when I installed/uninstalled the games.

It's a snowball affect... more market share, bigger share, bigger userbase, less competition. All the HD DVD only titles like Batman Begins coming over to Blu-ray. Movies like Lord of the Rings filling up the Blu-ray with tons of features HD DVD doesn't have... that shit's on the way out.

Actually, I meant in terms of competing with DVD. High-def DVD's are going to remain a small minority for a long time, they'll stay in the high-end market until HDtv's actually start capturing a real chunk of the market. The sales are to help push people to buy them so the format doesn't fail like UMD.

UMD, I knew you so well *sniffs*

:P

By the way Tagrineth... yanno those guys who made Gears of War... look what they have to say about disc space.

Unreal Tournament was 6GB compressed. Next Generation games are going to be 20GB plus, and how we're going to fit them on DVD9's I don't know, they'll probably be a few of them. On the PS3, we're going to be using the majority of the space on those Blu-ray disks. So, online isn't really the best option in some instances.

Bum di dum di dumbidum dum.

Shouldn't be much of an issue. Oblivion is only 6gig or so and that is a very big game. And that is with current compression so even as they increase in size they'll also get compressed further.

Also Ps2 games originally were about 3.5-4.5gig and went up to 6.5 max and Dvd9 can hold roughly 10 gig so provided a similar trend forms they should be fine for this gen.

Besides it is becoming common for them to release games then let you dl like 1gig patches and shit so even if they went over 10gig then they could release patches to suppliment. Also the option of just having a second disc isn't that out of the question.

I once got shown a link where some people who actually know stuff about compression went through all the arguements and concluded DVD9 is fine, but i have no idea where it was so i'm not able to link it myself.

Xbox 360 has a rule from day one, the core game cannot require use of the hard-drive, the only exceptions allowed are MMORPGs. You can add additional maps as bonus content but all core games must be in the discs.

True but the bonus content of G.R.A.W was like the 2nd half of the game. And was like a gig if i recall correctly

Bum di dum di dumbidum dum.

hehe.. I still find it funny people doubt that Blu-Ray disc space will be useful and needed even :P I doubt they couldn't put the games on multiple DVD9 discs but it seems people think Blu-Ray is completely useless when it isn't *shrugs*

Right and that shows that so early in the generation, Microsoft already isn't making good on their promises. The hard-drive is not supposed to be needed, that's why they sell at the 300 dollar price point. But now they slowly make the game unplayable and instead leverage your hard drive disc space to make up for DVD's weakness.

Then the $300 sku is gone because you quickly realize you need the 100 dollar hard drive anyway. But then that fills up so fast because every game throws extra content onto your hard drive because the DVD isn't big enough, so you end up spending 180 dollars for a new harddrive... now you're where the PS3 is in price only the PS3 has that next gen drive and wireless internet and you don't... The PS3 has a standard hard drive which means the developers can count on it for core content not just add-ons. The PS3 has a built in HD drive so every game can use the media....

Bitch slapped? HI ANTTARU, re-read what I said, I didn't say it's uncompressed, I said it isn't as compressed as it could potentially be.

You know about as well as I do how compressed Resistance is (ie neither of us has a remote fucking clue, when you get right down to it), but I'd bet real money that Resistance could be compressed into a smaller size. At a bare minimum I'm sure that 15GB could be shaved down to 12GB, possibly 10GB. I doubt it could be realistically fit onto a single DVD9 but two would be entirely within reason.

And again, PS3fanboysir, I wasn't suggesting it should be released on DVD9s, just that it could if need be. Don't read into it more than what I said, because all I said was it'd be feasible. Cry moar that Blu-ray isn't a necessity.

Also, Fire, note that I never said blu-ray's storage increase is useless, just that it isn't necessary and DVD9 does still have some life left.

lol.. a fanboy calling another a fanboy :P
