Will trophies/achievements persuade you to play on a console over the PC?

WoW has its own achievements. I don't see what's wrong with an extra award. My PS3 will likely be consumed by FFXIV for a long time, so I might as well raise my trophy count.

I see it pretty much the same way. I'm not going to chase them but it's always fun to get one especially when you weren't expecting it.

Yeah the achievements for ffxi were absolutely ridiculous. And almost impossible to get them all. I can get more points playing the intro to assassins creed II (no fighting, just cut scenes) than leveling a job to 75 in ffxi. Each 75 should be worth at least 200-300 points.

If it comes out on the 360 I'll use the 360 version for achievements, yes, but there is more to it than that. I prefer the 360 controller, experience, 37in. screen, and I prefer my couch to my computer chair. Trophies, I could care less about. If the game only hits PC and PS3 I'll buy the PS3 version for the couch time and T.V.

This is a really interesting response. It makes me wonder..do any of you have a crazy home theater setup that will drive your desire to play on console (or, at least, video, audio out to it from your PC)?

61" HDTV, 7.2 surround sound, and I will still play it on PC primarily through 2.0 speakers or 5.1 headset. I prefer playing with a keyboard (i know PS3 supports keyboard), I can't play on a keyboard/mouse as well while in the recliner, and I like to have some television going in the background while I play. I have the cables to run audio and video through the receiver and television that I use occasionally.

I think I will be playing on PS3, or XBOX 360 if it is available for it. Otherwise I'll have to buy a PS3, which I will do just for this game... lol

Anyways PS3 most likely because when I used to play FF11 on PC, I'd go crazy when I'd be in mid party when a virus scan starts which would be hours of lag and unpleasant playing experience during the scan. Don't have to do virus scans on PS3's :D

Oops forgot to include this quote, I agree. 20 points for getting a 75? So lame.

I don't like playing games on the PC, it's never been something that appealed to me. It's not the PC itself, but rather the controls. If I can plug in a controller, like I did with my xbox controller when I played ffxi briefly on PC, then I'm up for it, but I'd plump for a console due to being able to play on my 42" TV.

The achievement/trophy thing may seem irrelevant, but it's not. I can't speak for PS3 (though the general idea is the same), but achievements are a major part of my game-playing. If I like a game, I'll play it, but I'll always look at the achievement criteria and see what I can work towards - I guess it helps develop a sense of achievement, or for a better word, accomplishment. Especially nowadays, completing a game isn't just completing a game. You can complete it several times, not just on different difficulties, but choosing different paths, or completing the game the fastest way you can VS. taking your time and finding collectables etc.

Achievements are a major part of my gaming experience, but0 even if PC were to add some form of achievement idea, I'd still stick with console. I play on 360 just now, but only because it was cheaper than the PS3 when I got it and the games were better. When this Xbox breaks, which it will, I'll assess the games out at the time and in the foreseeable future and see which one tickles my fance. PC is very much in last place in terms of what I'd like to play games on... well ok, it's just above the Wii.

Going to play on Ps3, but not only for trophies and achievements and stuff, although those are nice, but the fact that my laptop is really small and not very fast, and I don't even know if this laptop is good enough to play FF14 yet, even though I just bought it last month.

I prefer playing console games over PC games anyway, although I sometimes play FFXI on my laptop and xbox 360. I enjoy using a controller much more and would rather sit in front of the TV and play for the better gaming experience.

I'll get it for both my PS3 and PC. Although I'd buy one copy first to see if it's worth getting it for the other console. Hell if it's hits 360 I'll probably grab a copy for that too. If I like 14 that is.

I was a 360 player all my time until I got a high end PC now I play on PC (that's only when I ever get on).

Problem is I'm a 360 man, so all my achievements are on that. Getting trophies (I guess this is what sony calls them?) would not mean much to me, because the only ones I would have would be from ffxiv. I hope at the last second they decide to release it on 360 as well, would save me a good amount of money, and I would care to work on achievements.

well if its anything like FFXI on the 360, it shouldnt matter what you play it on.
I played mostly on PS2 and then moved to PC for awhile and when 360 version came out, i bought it. Went to the NPC that gives out achievements, talked to em and unlocked a few that i had earned for all my time playing on the other systems. So if its cross platform playing like FFXI and they do the same thing, you dont have to restrict yourself to one system to earn achievements/trophies.
You could equally earn them on both ps3 and 360 if they do it the same way.

Yeah, I'm playing on PS3 cuz for now it seems its the only console its comin out on. If/when I get a high end PC i might buy it for that, or hopefully for the 360, but chances are I'll get it for all three just in case.

I don't think you will be able to flaunt your trophy collection. I don't think there's a way for someone to in-game open your PSN profile to see which trophies thye have, unless you ask them to add you to their friendlist first. But then again, they could do that even though you're playing on PC.

Either way, the only reason I will play on PS3 is because I want to play with good graphics in HD, something my computer can't handle very well. If and when I upgrade my computer, I will play it on PC instead.

ya i think im in the same boat.

my comp wont be able to even play the game I dont think, so ill probably play on ps3 unless I feel like building a new comp.

Trophies/achievements have never really been my thing, I play a game to enjoy it until I'm sick of it. If I manage to plat it or unlock most of the achievements by then, that's just icing on the cake. I would say I'll probably pick XIV up on the PS3 first simply because I want to use my HDMI cable more for my 42" sony bravia. I want to see how "good" the game is going to look! Now I know graphics isn't everything to a game, it's not going to make it the best game on earth... but it does help when it's a great game and visually pleasing. My computer is more than capable of being able to run XIV but I don't have it working with HDMI... little tricky and beyond my comfort zone to get that to work w/o possibly messing up the TV.

Given the chance I would test it on the PC though... just to see how capable it is and what might need an upgrade by the time I do get it for the PC (yes I plan to own it on both platforms at some point if I really enjoy it).

I'd love to play on my pc, but the MB, cooling, graphics card, and maybe PSU need to be upgraded on my PC. It'll definitely run XIV, but I'll have to run it on low setting to have a smooth experience. Although there is a lot of time to upgrade yet. I'm going to try to get my wife to attempt XIV as well, which would be mean she'll get the ps3 which is next to the desktop, therefore PS3 isn't an option assuming she's interested. Even if she isn't, I can't be hogging the TV/ps3 anyway, so I'll have to upgrade my PC.

However, in the event one of us uses the PS3, I have a question about controllers. How do you balance using the controller and keyboard on say XI for example? Do you plug in both and switch between picking up the two for playing/typing? Is that a big hassle? Can you only plug in a keyboard and do everything directly off that as if controlling the game on a pc? If so, do you lay the keyboard on your lap, or a table, or something else? And by the way, I should state I'd rather not use those controllers with the tiny keyboard built on top; they seem really unappealing.

If it can be done without a hassle, I'd enjoy being able to play with nice graphics without costly upgrades. I just have my doubts of comfort managing the keyboard and typing element on a couch.

And regarding trophies, I don't care. I got caught up pursuing achievements on the 360, and it negatively impacted my playing experience. Therefore, I now try to ignore them and enjoy the games for what they are. This is barring a few exceptions in which they add to the experience.

I use a Logitec wireless keyboard and mouse combo for my ps3 and you can switch between keyboard and using the controller (if that's what you prefer). I used keyboard/mouse and controller for LBP and I just switch over to keyboard when I wanted to convey a message to my fellow sack people. I haven't played FFXI on a console so I don't know how the controls might be for it and it's hard to speculate with XIV. You can look around for little laptop tray type deals that you can use for your keyboard and mouse if you choose to use those with ps3 and they're like 15-20 bucks and take a few min to assemble. It's kind of awkward and uncomfortable to use a keyboard in your lap for extended periods of time, at least for me it is.

Might not be so easy to pull off on the couch as I'm not sure what kind of laptop trays are out there and it might even cost you more than the one I purchased. The one I use works with most office chairs and I have one of those extremely comfortable mesh backing office chairs... Love being able to come home from work and just plop down in it... now if only it was a recliner! xD

I'm in your 360 hacking your achivements >.> but on a sour note i hear and was confirm that it will not be on 360 =/ Guess i'm buying a PS3 when and if i buy a ps3. . .Atleast that what i was told by a friend.

its true, not coming to the 360. They could not reach an agreement with MS, they said that xbox live was too closed of a community where as pc and ps3 were open. I assume that means MS wanted only gold members to have access to the game instead of being able to play on silver like FFXI. which would mean gold subscription plus FF sub. that or they didnt want to allow cross platform servers, or it could very well be they didnt want the use of playonline on 360 again. who knows, but its just not coming. so PC it is.

Trophies have absolutely nothing to do with my decision-making process for this.

If I do end up playing, the choice of platform will depend on how limited Squeenix is when it comes to providing adequate control for the game. If it ends up being a rehash of FFXI's nightmare, I'll likely go with the PC due to the utility of certain 3rd party applications for things as simple as maintaining timers on buffs applied, and circumventing horribly clumsy macro systems.

If Squeenix provides all the necessary tools one needs to play well without requiring something silly like smashing six macros to perform a simple weaponskill, then I'll give the PS3 version serious thought.

Will FFXIV's equipment/magic/battle systems be anything like FFXI? Who knows. If they are, hopefully they'll have learned from prior mistakes.

I'm not counting on it happening myself. Hell, I own a PS3 but will be playin' on the PC so it really doesn't matter in the first place. However, they keep saying it isn't goin' to be on it followed by vague suggestion that they are still negotiating. Just looks like when a cable companies subscription ends with a channel (i.e. Fox and TimeWarner recently) and they haggle each other until the last second to make something happen. MS would be stupid not to want a part in it, very stupid. I'd also like to know, if it actually isn't coming out, why they'd push back the PS3 release of the game which was suppose to launch with the PC version, to the best of my knowledge, and at the very least posted as a 2010 release.
