Windower 3.4 Released.

Did you copy the old 3.3 init.txt to 3.4? I can't really think of anything else.

One thing I found annoying about 3.4 is this little script in the init.txt file.

It's also the reason why I couldn't press F9 for Fraps to record Dark Rider popping on my exp party. I also like to move and chat, for some odd reason they made it so you could not move while typing with the numpad in chat.

Even the description is retarded, "when typing numbers into chat with the numpad," what the hell else am I going to type. B-+/., please! Using the forward slash key to run/walk, the hyphen key for the main menu, etc, will also not work with this script.

lol

Spoiler:
// *** ALLIANCE TARGET KEYS ***
// This lets you push Alt+F1-6 and Ctrl+F1-6 to to target Alliance members.
bind ^f1 input /ta <a10>
bind ^f2 input /ta <a11>
bind ^f3 input /ta <a12>
bind ^f4 input /ta <a13>
bind ^f5 input /ta <a14>
bind ^f6 input /ta <a15>
bind !f1 input /ta <a20>
bind !f2 input /ta <a21>
bind !f3 input /ta <a22>
bind !f4 input /ta <a23>
bind !f5 input /ta <a24>
bind !f6 input /ta <a25>

// *** Numpad Movement Keys ***
// These will make it so you do not move when typing numbers into chat with the numpad.
bind $numpad1 type 1
bind $numpad2 type 2
bind $numpad3 type 3
bind $numpad4 type 4
bind $numpad5 type 5
bind $numpad6 type 6
bind $numpad7 type 7
bind $numpad8 type 8
bind $numpad9 type 9

A blessing for some, annoying for me.

I also prefer my screenshots in chronological order. All in all, I kept my original setup by deleting the bind keys and ssorganizer. Unless you're experiencing plugins crashing, screenshot lag or disorganization, there's no real reason to upgrade to 3.4.
The guy that made that must be retarded... he ovbiously never heard of Num lock... pressing num lock makes it so that you do not move when typing numbers -.-

I have a quick question that I have a feeling could be answered easily.

Windower 3.4 runs w/o being windowed for me. When windowed mode is selected in the FFXI config, it will then pop up in the windowed mode, but it does have the distortion underneath, which I'd prefer not to have.

(I like to play 1280/960 while my computer screen is 1280/1024. This worked fine for me with the 3.3 version of the windower)

It's not that I don't mind the way it is now, it'd just be nice to be able to minimize the game. Anyone know how to fix this?

If your horozontal resolution in Windower is set to the Horozontal rezolution of your monitor, it will lock on your screen. Try lowering the settings to 1024/768 for 3:4 ratio, 1024:600 for 'widescreen'.

Personally I would just get a new monitor. If you're locked into a 1280/1024 monitor you really would benefit more, overall, from that, more than any processor, ram, video card, or any other system upgrade.

This: Dell 24" LCD is a really awesome monitor, and it's dirt fucking cheap. To give you an idea, it can have as much information on it close to 4x as much as your current screen.

Is it just me or are people a bit more pink with this new Windower?

I personally have not seen any tinting. There's no Windower colour correction functionality at this time. But if you want, you can use FFXI's gamma tilts, they're in the config menu, just add more Green/Blue to balance.

Why is this thread still here? This was discussed, at length, some time ago and the basically unanimous opinion was that the promotion of hacks, or links to them, was unacceptable. What happened to that?

Probably because your idea of Hacks is a little strict? Windower is as much a 'hack' as a video card driver is... Cheating is giving yourself an unfair advantage over other players, Windower does not do that; anythign you can do in windower, you can do in game; Windower just does it more efficently.

You do realize you do this every time and every time you look like a complete tool? If you were so concerned with cheating, then you shouldn't even be reading forums for tips and strategies... Get over yourself.

"Tickled pink," comes to mind. ^^ Funny.

Reeve posted the question "should discussion of hacking and botting be allowed at QCDN.org?" A unanimous response was given that said "No." I went ahead, read the topic you refer to and excised two posts that seem to reflect the issue the best.

-- wether the mods allow it or not, the community wouldn't let it happen. You might find 1 relevant post out of 20 in a thread about hacking. The rest would be nothing but ridicule and insults.

Trippy is right, QCDN would not allow discussion of how to use a fishbot, or claim bot. Any topic that had anything to do with it would probably be reported and destroyed by the moderators within 15 minutes of the OP. However, windower seems to fall under a different category in the minds of 95% of FFXI players.

Personally, I suppose I can agree TParty gives me an advantage over the PS2 player. On a macroscopic level it may even allow linkshells to gain small advantages. The only other plugin that I have tried is Bloodpace, which is definitely a weakness to the FFXI interface, but gives no advantage a timer or stop watch wouldn't give.

My preference is to not allow it. My reasoning for this is most bot writers will not discuss technical information in a public forum. Most of the posts we will see will be links to bot programs, how to fix/work guides, scripts for bots, etc. None of which is really going to provide value to the people not cheating.

This is where it starts running a little thick -- Windower Scripts. Whether we like it or not, the potential is there for automated actions. Whether it is macros, or the ability to target alliance members, what have you -- this is circumventing mechanics in my opinion. Am I guilty of using Windower Macros? Yes. I got tired of reformatting my computer to just have to rebuild all 8 macro sets.

As illegal as using Windower is, it is also technically against the ToS to copy the 'user' folder, so I am damned if I do, damned if I don't.

Why is this topic still here? I have to answer hard questions and easy ones, so I'll try my best to find common ground. The QCDN member base has not expressed sentiment that Windower is a cheat. Square Enix, as Garvin's signature shows, says very much otherwise.

I can lock the thread, but it won't change anyones opinion. I could delete the thread, but eventually another would be made in its place. We can ban talking about Windower, but that would be unpopular.

The problem is the varying definition of what constitutes cheating in FFXI. DAT swaps are against the ToS and I don't know if anyone has spoken out against those. (I don't mean switching Fafnir for a Rabbit, I mean changing outfits). Several people see Windower as "de facto" because of SE's very poor customer service for PC players. However, QCDN is capable of taking a hard line against this with SE's release of a functional Windower. Then of course, there are the outliers that swing all the way to the left, saying stopwatches are unfair, and then those too the right that say all is fair in love and war.

Thats why the topic is still here. We aren't sure as a community where the line is. It kind leaves a very extemporaneous solution up to the moderator of choice on how to handle this. Is it what SE says or is it what the user's say? SE doesn't use this board, we do.

I would recommend Board Support and Feedback topic specifically addressing Windower. I would challenge anyone that provides feedback to think carefully on what they think is cheating.

You're absolutely right. This forum has no opinion of, and no patience for, what the community at large considers to be hacks and bots (such as claimbots, fishbots, fleehacks, teleportation hacks, etc.), and any such posts advertising such things are deleted.

However, as you (or some other "Garvin" - it was a guest) yourself said in that very topic, some things are not to be lumped in with this. You have issues with Windower to the point of a minor crusade. This is well known. That does not, however, mean the community in general shares your perspective and opinions.

If you would like to form the opinion from this that we're a bunch of hypocritical bastards, you're more than entitled to it, although I would suggest that you take it to the flameboard if you plan to get heated. If you would like to solicit the opinions of the community to see what percentages of people agree or disagree with your evaluation of Windower, you can also do that. In another topic, not this one.

But unless and until such time as the QCDN community as a whole or sizable majority - not just one or even a few individuals - clearly demonstrates a belief that Windower = hack/bot... unless and until such a time comes, Windower and discussion thereof is completely fair game on this forum.

Just to clarify, that post was my old account. Reeve was unable to re-link the posts I'd made to the new account.

This is definitely a grey area, especially regarding what exactly constitutes "cheating". Square-Enix's decision (opinion doesn't seem to be the right word) has been given already. The opinion of the majority is also obvious. I've got plenty more to say regarding this, I'll save it for Support & Feedback in a bit though.

Actually, you can not program a bot with Windower macroes. Sure, you can make one that skill ups Enhancing Magic for 10 min by spamming bar-spells, but that means you can't stop it, and you need to let it run its course. You can't make automated scripts with it, which is what a bot it. You can only make a damn long macro.

As for targeting alliance members, that is actually a function SE have added for PS2 and compact keyboard, which is not possible to do on the normal keyboard for PC and, I believe, Xbox. Compact keyboard and PS2 give you the option to swap between alliance members up/down like you would your party with the click of a button. You can do the same with the help of Windower, but not otherwise, so that would be like saying playing on PS2 gives you an unfair advantage. Which it do in regards to this.

SE should embrace and encourage people to edit and mod their dats. It keeps people interested in the game longer, people could submit their modded dats to SE, hold contests for dat edits, SE can learn from their consumer base what things they'd like to see in characters, etc. It's really better business for them, since they don't need to allocate their resources to improve the game or even future games.

Also, the windower scripts are not bots. Just think of them as infinite macro lines, that's all they really are. And windower is not by any stretch a "hack."

The problem is that SE is notorious for wanting to keep a very tight grip on their products and not wanting any outside opinions or changes thereof. It's not just limited to FFXI.

My personal view on SE's anti-third party proclamation is rather akin to my personal view on US government laws about the consumption of alcohol before the age of 21. Namely, there are definitely situations where it's a bloody stupid idea - which is why the rule is in place. (In general, it's more important to think about the reasoning behind a rule than to get too caught up in the technicalities of the rule itself.)

And there are also definitely situations, that the rule maker may or may not be aware of depending on just how out of it they are, where there's no cause for concern. For example, a teenager drinking booze under the supervision of their family. So that booze isn't this forbidden fruit that they overindulge in at the first opportunity and proceed to wreck their car and/or get themselves injured or killed. Drinking earlier than 21 is *healthier* than that alternative, obviously: any fool can tell you that unless they're a tunnel-vision rule-spouter.

And the hard and fast rules are more for the government or company to cover their ass in the former case of problematic rule-breaking, than because the latter case is actually a problem. (Or, possibly, because of the whole "out of it" thing and they really are so out of touch with reality that they don't realize there exist non-problematic cases.) And because it invites a bunch of legal complications to start specifying exactly when it is and is not okay, so it's easier just to say it's not okay.

Yes, scripts ARE bots. You can replace the above with /dig, /item Sickle <t>, /ra <t> .... whatever you want basically

Great idea! i'll start using that macro while mining or fishing on my ps2 and see if the GM bans me for it!

You can do that with the in-game macros, Windower just lets you have more lines. Uzor even pointed that out.

It's still not a bot, by any definition of the term; it's just a longer macro. You're an idiot.

ITT: Silly people don't know the difference between bots, hacks, and scripts.

Would be nice if we all stopped debating useless semantics and discussed about the new windower 3.4....

um, obviously you guys are mixing up bots with macros.

A macro is a simple set of instructions all layed out in an order. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7...

Whereas a bot will check for certain values and rules, then make a decision, and perform a set cours eof actions, IE

lbl0
if 1+2=3
then
goto1
else
goto2
lbl1
/dig
goto0
lbl2
goto0

thus a bot is a form of AI, it acts on it's own, moving form point A to point B, then checking something and performing an action.

If you seriously think:

/item "Hi-ether tank" <me>
/wait 60
/item "Hi-ether tank" <me>
...
repeat

is a bot, then obviously using:

/ja Provoke <t>
/wait 1
/ma "Flash" <t>
/wait 1
/ja "Shield Bash" <t>

Is a bot too, right?

Wrong, it's a macro. There is no if, and, or, else, then, goto, or label functions in ffxi's macros. Because their macros, not bots.

And that's why windower could be used to hack, due to granting the ability to run background programs. But then again, so does SE's windowed mode. Yeah that's right, their are already a few fleehacks, bots, and other programs developed that work with SE's version of windower.

So are you trying to say SE promotes hacking? I think not. Windower is not a hacking program, it's a windower, that's it. You may as well accuse microsoft of creating hacking when they introduced .net. It's a tool that CAN be used for hacking, but wasn't MADE for that purpose.

Windower wasn't made for hacking, it was originally designed to simply allow a way to do other stuff on your computer while playing.
