Has anybody else tried it yet? I've been playing with it for about 7 hours now and I'm rather pleased with it. So far its worked almost flawlessly other than a few minor hiccups you'd expect with a beta. Performance wise It works just as fast for me as XP does. I haven't run into any compatibility issues yet, in fact the few drivers I needed I just grabbed the 32 bit Vista versions and have had no problems with them. But I've heard its as compatible with programs as Vista is. I'm going to test that out tomorrow when I try to install FFXI on it >_>

You can download it here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/beta-download.aspx

there should still be some Registration keys left but if not you can still play around with it for 30 days. Also it says you'll need to upgrade from a valid copy of Vista SP1 but I did a fresh install on a 20GB partition, and it took about 30 mins for me to install much faster than i've had any OS install for me before.

Actually the options it gives are fresh install or upgrade from a valid Vista SP1 install, no other upgrade path is eligible.

I've downloaded it but I need to get a spare hard drive to install it on since I can't rely on a beta to work on a day to day basis.

You can dual boot 7 and XP, I also know people are running Linux and 7 on the same PC too you just have to reinstall GRUB after installing 7.

Why would you need to reinstall GRUB? Seems like you'd only have to make an entry for it.

I haven't played with it yet, but I'd like to. Maybe I'll forge down an image of my laptop and give it a go.

It probably overwrites the MBR of the first hdd to install it's standard NTloader or whatever they use now in Windows 7.

Whats a good(Free) program I can use to burn an ISO o w/e?

FYI, Windower(unofficial) doesn't work on it quite yet. Unless they magically made an update in the past 12 hours I haven't seen. And even the fresh install (non-Vista user upgrade) tosses your old files from I'm assuming XP into a "Windows.old" file so you can still access them. But I'd highly suggest still backing them up as this is still a beta!

image burn (or something like that) is a good program to use if you don't have nero on your system. (there's link on the windows 7 install page I believe)

Windows 7 looks great, much better than vista, and it's only in beta.

I have very high hopes for this OS. If it stays as good as it is right now, I'll actually put some money down and buy it for easier usage.

Yeah 7s NT Loader looks like Vistas but works like XPs so you don't have to trick it into dual booting anymore (or was that problem with Vista fixed somewhere along the line?) But same old problem if you install XP/Vista/7 it eats GRUB and you have to reinstall.

The number one thing that surprised the hell out of me... I ran dxdiag and it shows that it installed DirectX 11.

So when will the full thing be released? If anyone knows.

I'm running it on my laptop. I upgrade from Vista SP1. Seems to be ok so far. I haven't used it a LOT, just a few hours, but I haven't seen any issues yet. It runs just as fast as Vista does, which is snappy (yes, believe it or not, Vista runs great if you've got a decent cpu, 4gb ram, and run 64bit).

I've completely ditched XP on all of my personal systems for Vista.

Anyone have some SS of the basic desktop and other key interface options (If any?)

Microsoft say aprox 3 years to develop.

Q. What is the expected timeline for the availability of Windows 7?

A. We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and expect it will take approximately 3 years to develop. The specific release date will be determined once the company meets its quality bar for release.

Does that remind anyone else of Gnome? (I think that's right, the Linux [think I was using Debian at the time, dunno if that particularly matters, been a long time out of using linux] GUI)

Or the MacOS again, like Win3.1 did with the Mac contemporary.

It reminds me more of KDE than GNOME, really lol

Hey guys,
Yeah, I know OMG Ury has somethin' to say.

I've been using Windows 7 beta since the weekend after it was released, and I'm quit impressed with it. That's kinda rough for me to say because I'm generally anti-ms. I've been using Ubuntu for quite some time now, even got my wife, Tuuriri, to switch over to it. Windows 7 really does run pretty comparably to windows XP on my machine. Which is pretty impressive for MS. I know under linux I can run Compiz and FF at the same time without any problems, so vista not being able to hardly run on my system really bothered me. Only issues I've had with windows 7 were minor issues that'll probably be fixed fairly easily in release. Thus far I also haven't seen any way to get windower.net working with it, but then I'm not sure it even runs all that well on vista. Now if we could just get SE to fix the performance of their windowed mode we could all be happy..
