Worth getting?

FFXI had no AH either at start right?

There was no AH originally, but that was only when it was in Japan. By the time it got to America, there was definitely a AH at start. I used it on the release date.

Selling things can be a bit annoying since there's no central place to sell things. I guess just throw shit in your bazaar and cross your fingers.

Market wards. It's a mess. You have to comb and get lucky.

Ok an (updated) list of gripes and likes.

Gripes:

Why the fuck does a lv 5 gear recipe require lv 15-20+ synth mats from OTHER crafts? I'm talking like 3-4 different tradeskills just to make a lv 5 piece of gear, and not only that, they ALL are considerably higher level requirements to make those mats. Just for a lv 5 piece of gear. People can't find good gear, because its a literal PAIN to make a simple thing like a shield that has no stats or quality to it. Where is the sense in that exactly?

Targetting. Quite sure everyone hates the targetting. You can cycle through mobs that aren't even on your fucking radar before you land on the target killing your healer RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. The only way to reliably target things is to point n click them. Even then, if you're locked onto another target, you just flop about aimlessly while you try to target the mob. By that time your healer is dead anyway, before you can A) cancel your current target, B) click on the tiny wharf rat that's about 3 pixels large that's murdering you, C) wait 10 seconds for taunt to go off, because the UI is incredibliy unresponsive and sluggish.

Losing guildleves on dc/crash. I've had at least 50% of my leves bug out, the server dc on me while doing them, or my client crash while doing them. When you log in, you can resume your leve, but only if someone in your group still is doing it, and even then, if you resume it, it TREATS you as though you "shared" the leve. So you get 1000 gil for a leve that was supposed to give you 8k. Over time, that adds up. I've lost a good 100k in gil from crashes/dcs/bug-outs in leves already. That's pretty fucking huge.

Crafting mats. Why in fucks sake do you need to craft some of these mats which are like rank 15. Copper shits even. I need them for a skillup recipe, BUT THEY'RE 10 levels higher than what I need to make. Really?

Limited keybinds. In order to change your keyboard hotkeys, you have to go through all the other hotkeys you don't want to use immediately, and bind them to something in the alphabet ONLY. You can't bind anything to 0-9, or <;?!>?.,/(space) or pretty much anything. Okay, so whats the big deal with that? YOU CANT OVERWRITE A KEY IF ITS IN USE BY ANOTHER BIND. Oh okay, so whats the big deal with THAT? THE PROBLEM IS EVERY FUCKING KEY IS ALREADY BOUND BY DEFAULT SO YOU HAVE 2 KEYS EVER AVAILABLE AT ANY TIME AND THERES NO WAY TO STRAIGHT UP DELETE A KEY ASSIGNMENT. So, to bind something to left strafe, I have to first find whatever the fuck is bound to "S", then change that. But in order to change that, I have to find something that isn't bound. So I go through every key possible until i find one. Then I change it, then I can change my strafe left button. Now I need strafe right (F), oh hey I just fucking bound F to what was previously S, so now I have to find a new free key to put in there in order to change it. Six hours later I finally have semi-functional customized keyboard controls. Is this fucking 1990? Oh and you can't bind anything to the arrow keys. Which is ridiculous, seeing as they controlled the camera in 11...why would they be forced to do something different now? You literally can't bind shit in ff14.

Travel. I really do not miss spending 5 hours walking places. Now, they do have the anima/teleport system, which is great. If you never use it. A typical teleport runs you 4-6 anima depending on distance, sometimes even 8 for really long hops. They start you out with 99, which sounds like plenty. About 4-5 days in I'm completely out of anima though. And you only regen 4 anima per day I believe. Not a huge deal, but once you run out, you'll find yourself having to beg your friends to mooch their teles around, and they'll probably be out soon too. What's that mean? Back to waiting 5 hrs for a ferry to get to another nation, then another hour to walk to the quest camp, realize you forgot to pick up leves, walk back. Get your leve. Walk BACK to camp. Oh forgot to repair your gear. Walkkkkkkkkkkkkk - yea no fuck it /logout. I literally wasted at least 5 hours just in travel time alone, and that's about 50% of my in-game time (without using anima). The anima thing is really convenient though when you have some to spare.

The market SUCKS. Market wards are terrible. Like welcome to fucking 1990 (again). You can hire retainers to bazaar your items so you dont have to stay online all day to sell things. That's a great feature actually. Because your retainer also acts like your mog house. Again, great idea. Until you realize your bazaar is now limited to EIGHT ITEMS. Now. The Market Wards are separated into like 10-12 instances. For one, this means no one will even think to check anything but the first one on the list. Why? Because we're lazy stupid fucks. I've sat in ward 2, 3, 4, for a while just doing generic retainer transactions. the ONLY people who came through, dropped a retainer, they don't check anything but the "First Synthgoht Ward" basically. Great, so you put your retainer in the first synthgoat ward or whatever. But then you realize something. There's a zillion other bazaars there too! And not only that, there's so many fucking bazaars, only like 5-6 are loading on screen at a time, and only if you're riding right up their assholes. So that even furthur diminishes your chances of selling something, assuming people have the patience to browse through and find your bazaar in the sea of lag. Again, you could go to an empty ward, but no one really ever checks them. Retainers are AT BEST storage. That's it, make sure you name your retainer something obvious if you want to sell anything of importance. I can see "Weapons" and "Accessories" are always sold out of items. Or make sure you snag a stand. The whole "6" stands that are available that is, first come first serve till the servers crash, then you need to camp the login screen still to even have a chance at getting one.

General stuff, responsiveness. Everything, and this may just be because all the early zones are crowded as fuck. But EVERYTHING takes at least 3-4 seconds to respond. Check a bazaar? Get ready to wait a minimum of 8-10 seconds. Switch jobs? Takes about 15 seconds for your bars to update each action. And that's with a MACRO.

Battle Regimens. The most fucked up ass-backwards implementation of skillchains yet. They don't seem to have any benefit over NOT using them, seeing as it takes 5-6 seconds to queue the laggy pieces of shit up, and while you're queuing up battle regimens, you can't do ANYTHING. You literally cannot use any abilities while setting up for a BR. They're basically a big waste of time, and you're gimping yourself heavily just trying to set them up. So far they don't appear to do anything special that you couldn't just do spamming TP moves.

Chat. You can only type like 10 words before you get cut off. Also, just about EVERYTHING YOU DO IN THE GAME interrupts your chat. So if you're in the middle of crafting, can't chat. You lose whatever you're typing halfway through. In combat? Lose your chat. I highly suggest not using chat for important messages in the heat of battle.

/Commands. FF14 is missing about 75% of the useful /commands that FF11 had. Yeah I understand the game just came out. But for crying out loud, there's no Inventory shortcuts, no fast way to check your linkshells out, everything is so goddamned tedious to navigate, menus, macros, and half of the good config commands just aren't in 14 yet.

Windowed mode. Crashes 50% of the time, and fullscreen crashes if you alt tab. For a company with as much money and experienced programmers who can implement some pretty impressive things in their other games, why can't they get the game to minimize or alt-tab like JUST ABOUT EVERY GAME THATS EVER BEEN MADE IN THE LAST 10 YEARS.

Okay, so enough griping. here's the cool stuff

Again, teleporting. If you have the anima, is awesome. you can go pretty much anywhere once you've been there once.

Gathering and Crafting. They are a lot more fun than in 11, or just about any MMO i've played. At least. They're more engaging that is to say. You don't just find a recipe and click OK to make them synth. You actually interact and have some influence on the outcome of your gather/synth in some way or shape.

Guildleves. Other than being a royal pain if you dc/crash, they're entertaining, and great for casual players to make some quick gil and exp. On the downside, they are on a 36 hour cooldown, so dont expect to spam them. They do make skilling up a craft much easier though. I don't feel they're always better for exp than just straight up grinding sometimes, but again, for a casual player you can just pick them up and get something accomplished in an hour or two.

Graphics. Incredible.

I'm heavily debating sticking out past the first month TBQH. I'm sure they can go some great direction with this game if they fix some very basic issues, but as it stands, the game is more frustrating than 11, and its hardly because the game is what i'd call "hard". Its more the fault of silly implementations of really trivial things, that should be pretty trivial, like basic low level crafts. If low level crafts require mastery level to synth, I'm very scared to know what high level synths require.

I attribute all of the above to the idea that SE developers really have no clue what they are doing when it comes to writing code for PC games. If you think about it, how many major PC development studios come out of Japan? I can't think of a single one off the top of my head, they seem to be an overwhelmingly predominant console-only gaming community. I think this causes two problems with the development of PC games: 1) lack of experience, obviously and 2) lack of a talent pool to draw developers from. How often do you hear about developer from major, successful PC studios in North America or Europe going to other PC studios to work on new projects? Quite often. Now combine with this with the blatant stubbornness of SE that we all know about and you have a recipe for a PC MMO failure.

As I've said before, the design of FFXIV very much feels like a 2002 game. FFXIV definitely does not seem to be optimized for PC gaming in general. It's almost as if SE refuses to acknowledge that the MMO genre has evolved significantly since the days of EQ and FFXI and is solely relying upon their brand name and fanbase to have a commercially successful MMO. What SE fails to realize is that there are so many more MMO choices in 2010 than there were in 2003 and there are some major titles looming on the horizon that will definitely cause MMO players to make choices about where they want to invest that monthly subscription fee. On a final note, I can't help but think that a lot of the illogical design choices are also heavily influenced by the fear of RMT scripting. I can't really point to any specific examples as I only played for about ~30 hours during OB, but I definitely had a feeling that there were some anti-RMT designs built into gameplay. Ironically, during my second day of OB I saw no less than 4 different RMT characters spamming the chat channels with gil-selling websites.

I agree with most of your gripes (even if the teleport anima one is kinda your fault for forgetting to pick up guild leves) but these two problems up here I can't agree with.

You've seriously had 50% of your leves bug out? The only leve problem I had so far is where it told me mob was in x spot when it was actually somewhere completely different. I just ran around and found it eventually. That's happened once I've done a lot of leves and haven't seen anything else bad happen as of yet. Maybe you've just got really unlucky or you're just exaggerating a bit.

Constant D/Cs and window mode crashes? I got D/C'd last night, but then again our whole server did. So I'll put that down to SE. However, I've not once D/C'd as of yet and I think I've only crashed twice? And even then, that's when I afk from my pc for more than an hour and it goes into sleep mode. I don't even have the most reliable internet connection at times and I still stay connected. I wanna recommend you check that out with your ISP or something, seems odd.

Other than that, I pretty much agree with all your complaints. Things are a little to the side but I'm enjoying it here and there. I'mma stick with it a little longer than a week before I rage quit like so many others. I don't own a high end PC at all either, just to put that out there.

Maybe I suffer less because I play during EU times for the most part, maybe it's more of a server load during NA times. I can't imagine it would be that game breaking though.

I haven't had any problems with getting d/c, and it has only crashed once or twice on me. Granted, I've probably only played a total of around 10-15 hours.

The biggest problem I have is the lag, whether it's lag during combat or simply waiting five minutes for NPCs around me to pop up. I'm currently running on the highest level of detail, but if I lower it will the lag get better? The game runs fine otherwise.

/shrug, my game has been remarkably stable so far. As for the Anima gripe, I tend to save mine for long-distance time-sensitive jumps, and just walk to the closer camps, so I maintain a healthy reserve.

The rest of the stuff though, I more-or-less agree with. The Market Ward is a vast improvement on FFXI's bazaar system, and a giant leap backwards in terms of actual utility even compared to XI's AH system, which isn't the best out there by any stretch of the imagination. Crafting is a muddied mess of components, and leveling enough crafts to be able to make the things you want to make the things you want is fairly daunting. Etc, etc etc. I'll give it my usual fair shot that I give MMOs, but I'm not overly hopeful if SE doesn't make at least some acknowledgment of the issues.

No problem with crashes here.

I like the game :3

**I think a key factor is having a good group of friends and people to work with and quest with. I can see where I would be super fustrated if I was not in the type of linkshell I am in now. I love you guys!**

its not the DC'ing part. I don't dc or crash that much since I fixed some things, but DCs happen fairly frequently when leves reset, due to everyone and their goddamn mom doing them.

It still needs to be fixed if you dc while doing a leve, because you lose a lot of potential rewards. I think a couple of the leves I lost had some gear rewards too that sounded fairly decent.

Friends or not the game is so cumbersome to play Idk if it's really worth a monthly sub.

If you don't like it, don't play it. If you keep disconnecting for some reason, then that's on you, but don't blame the game because I've d/ced only once (yesterday). No point in bitching about the game though when it seems everyone else is fine and it's just you having problems. I didn't bitch about FFXI when I was ALWAYS lagging. I knew I had a really shit PC at the time so I didn't say it was FFXI's fault, I yelled at my PC.

The only problem I'm having is the lack of content so I get bored and I stop playing after 1-3 hours til the next day. Otherwise, the game is pretty stable.

Maybe SE could have delayed the release date to fix some of these issues, but I'm well aware they know about them. I for one am very pleased with the game, and tolerant of the few flaws that I find.

Content: Will definatley be added a lot.
Lack of AH: I believe is coming through searchable bazaars / seperated bazaar regions.
Anima Regen: I believe they'll make it go faster... cause it is kinda slow. I'm super cautious with when I tele, only going b/w different regions with it now, or I'd have to be in a huge hurry to use otherwise.

There's so much good about that game now too, and to me, its definatley worth getting so you can start building up your character. I love the head start I'm getting :)

Games cost money, keeping it in production without any income from it costs more money. Release the game, patch the rest, start your income for it now. It's not exactly a secret on why it was release with some errors, missing components, and incomplete area's of the game. it's just the simple fact that there's only one way to make money and that's releasing the game and get that stuff done asap. Besides, if the game releases and it flops then they'll know to halt the investment of time and resources into it. It's all sound business, so long as the problems of the game aren't what causes it to falter.

The things that bother me about the game are all fixable with simple updates. For one, I want a manual sort function in inventory. I'm sick of not having a hand in how my things are organized. I don't need 8 sub menus to craft something. I don't need npc menu 3 second timer for the sale/buy list to show up. I need slightly faster anima regen. I need chocobo/speedy world navigation implemented. 10 minutes between each camp is getting annoying on repeat trips. I also need a mail delivery function as well as some sort of search in the market place.
