Just a friendly reminder that gear does indeed own skill post 55.

By level 55 if you don't know your job or what you're doing please stop playing it asap. So what does that lead us to? The time honored debate about "SKILL"


You have got to be fucking kidding me, "Skill", I didn't realize we are disarming bombs or taking a hairpin curve at 180 MPH for the checkered flag. You gimps make up reasons all the time and justifications for your crummy gear by constantly falling back on the

Skill > Gear garbage.

Let's face it, post 55 is when everyone should have their jobs down pat pretty damn well, so what does that leave us? Gear to improve our performance even more!

And of course, EEEEEVVVVERYONE on the internet forums considers themselves "Skilled" at this game or at least they post about it. You're telling me a gimped "genius" monk is going to outshine a pimped out "not so bright" monk in a party situation at level 55? That's giving alot of leeway as the job Monk should be mastered by level 1/2.

Name me one thing post 55 that a player needs to completely master and will become new too.

My point is, get off your fucking high horse like this game is brain surgery and it's ok to not have item x because you think you're "skilled". Level 55 (and again I'm really stretching it here) and post 55 your gear is really more important than your "Skill" (LOL)

You can go on and have shit gear all you want, I don't give a damn, just don't expect to party with more efficient people, but don't you DARE use that your so called "Skill" is your reasoning for not having an item the majority of your job comrades have or has become the norm.

and another thing, if you have a fucking PLD in your party post 40 stop inviting Ninjas! I don't want to be in a god damn 2 tank party. Most PLD are kind of dopey and never really pay attention to what's going on, I doubt they want to party with Ninjas either. Unless it's Ninja/Blm of course ^^ (Svina) Stop settling on any party set up, that's why half of you bastards quit so god damn early, because you take any party you can weasel your way into and hate your life while you rake in 3k xp an hour. (and that's if you're lucky)

You really can't just say that gear is more important that skill. Yes, a naked tank, nomatter how fucking "skilled" he is, will kill your party pretty consitantly. However, I'd rather play with an intelligent person with nq equipment than a retard with all +1,+2, 50 billion dollars worth of gear. Having sniper+1s will never change the fact that somebody is a fucking idiot.

What you're really saying is that your average person with good gear is better than your average person with average gear....no shit. You DO have to have some common fucking sense to play this game, and if you lack that, no amount of gear will make up for it.
 
One question, why 55? :shock:

I agree that if you're gimped, stop making excuses and farm, or I'll bitch at you. But it all comes down to what ppl conceive as not being "gimped".

You can think a RNG55 w/o Euryto's Bow(7+mil) is a gimped RNG. But my expectation is much lower than that (w/o War Bow+1, archersx2 or noct set). You can also think a WHM59 w/o Vermy(3.5mil) or Astralx2 is gimped, but not everyone agrees with you.

Some pieces of equipment are must-have (think Brigandine). Some are just pure luxuries (Brigandine +1).

With that said, I haven't seen many people that are gimped in my standard. Maybe 1 out of 10. You just set your standard too high.

Although I'm not too fond of the "skill>gear" argument, I don't think it's garbage. There are just too many people that don't know what the fuck they're doing. There are the NINs who don't know how to cancel Ni when casting Ichi, there are the suicidal RNGs, or the WARs who never put up Defender when getting hit, I can go on and on. I've only partied with a few people I consider "skilled". It takes a lot of practice to max out your performance.

My point is that being 55 (again, why 55? lol) doesn't make people "skilled". I know they should be, but there is a good portion of them that aren't.

Performance = Skill + Gear (each has its own modifiers, which depend on what job you play).

What is really pissing me off lately is people inviting my Ninja with a huge level range than acting like I'm the asshole when I disband.

It's like... lvl 52, 52, 52, 51, 50 then for the last guy they grab a lvl 55, wtf? Then say "It's ok we'll chain fast" or some bullshit, like 1 lvl 55 is gonna mean we'll be chaining intesnsely fast, even when it's the fucking redmage and all they do is screw around meleeing anyway. Or we end up heading out to some camp most of us are too low for and they expect me to tank some mob that's IT to 3 levels above me for 120 xp a pop.
 
i think u realy have to look at this topic as not just gear>skill. it really depends on the job any mage job i would say skill>gear thf,pld,nin,and war(if tanking) skill is also better than gear as for the rest of the jobs they just pull out thier weapons and start hitting the thing untill they get enuff TP. and how often the get tp is based on gear so i would say gear>skill for them. and beastmaster prolly needs alot of skill too but no one really cares about thier gear cause they are nvr in pts

as for ppl knowing what to do with thier job after 55, i dont know what kind of pts u have been in but ive been in lots of pts post 55 where ppl have no clue what they are doing.
 
Hahahaha, and this just reinforces why you are on my blist. Yeah there are some asshole NA vang... /point. I have seen a thf with awesome equipment at around level 59, you know what? he fucking sucked. I'm never going to pt with that person again. Saying everyone knows there job post 55 is just fucking rediculous. I've known some horrible horrible people that had +1 equip and stuff like that. There are NA that steal from people and have the "best" gear but asshole's will be assholes, and dumbasses will be dumbasses. Some people just cant cut there job and there is NOTHING you can do about it. Just dont pt with them, haha. Furthermore I think you should learn your place about HNM's, people have seen King Behemoth come up purple, the fact is that right now JP's have a sort of monopoly on certain HNM's. For one they have been doing them a lot longer than us, two there are people like Lucifar who NA bash and MPK. There are other JP's who dont like doing that and even try to stop other's from MPK'ing. To be angry at the Japanese in whole is just moronic and intolerant. I applaud Svina for keeping his integrity in most of these situations, there will be a time when Lucifar and people like him will get theres, dont you doubt.

I agree, great gear is the bee's knees but I would rather take a player who knows what they are doing with normal gear (no +1's but the appropriate gear for their job/level) than a fucking idiot with a PCC.

There are idiots past 50 (I'm not 55 yet but I'm almost 54..), people who don't know what weapon to use, people who don't know not to use fucking soul eater when they keep stealing hate, summoners who sub freakin BLM at level 50, Theives who don't know how to pull, Rangers who sub Warrior, people who don't level their subjob, etc. They're all there.

I don't care if they are wearing Scorp Harness, Verm Cloaks, Astral Rings, PCC, Strider Boots...whatever, they're all stupid.
Would I rather have a skilled player with a good attitude and incredible gear? Yeah....But you're dillusional if you think that there are no people who still can't play their job past 55....Sweet lord I WISH everyone knew how to play their jobs....Gear can only take you so far if you're a SMN/BLM pre 70
 
Ah, I was wondering if Vang would ever post since the IP at work was banned, but then again, I haven't been on the Flameboard for a while...

I'm never one for arguing this time old Gear > Skill, or Skill > Gear. I've seen really good gear get people in trouble, ie: they do a lot of damage and can not control their hate which equals their death and then we're in the ones responsible. Or sure they have all the skills in the world but ya... it's my subjob so I don't care about it. Whatever, there's a million reasons that can be used.

Bottom Line, why doesn't everyone just go Gear + Skill = Excellent.

You see all the posts of people going after the good gear but when Vang mentions it, it's like "oh no, Vang again." You may not like Vang himself, but anyone that zealous about their job would be good to have in a party. On a side note, I like talking to Vang in game because he's actually a good guy. I try not to bring the flameboard into the game unless I've been personally attacked on the board.

I hate exping as much as most people. I hate the level grind. I'd rather enjoy playing and if I have to level, I better be having a good time.

Chore = Washing dishes. FFXI should not = chore. Exping with retards = chore.

Good post... I agree with a few of the points. But there are definietly players out there with pimped out jobs... who can't play for shit. And there are also a lot of not-so-pimped out players(not saying gimped but like... not having Wisdom +1's and Morion +1's at my lvl blm) who are awesome players. Anyways... yea usually having pimped gear does mean a player has got their shit together... but occasionally it just means they visit IGE a bit too much.

Sorry, but I preferr someone who knows what they're doing over someone with great gear, mainly because if they know what they're doing they'd, gasp, HAVE GOOD GEAR. There's already been a few exceptions listed in other threads, but really, I'd preferr the MNK with T.M. Hooks who can actually SC Fusion and crap, vs the MNK with Spartans that solos Howling Fist..
 
there is a line that exists in this game where being skilled over completely oblivious to your job helps, but most of the time you wont see the truly skilled players until end-game d00d

people who can solved problematic situations like when you encounter an almost full wipe on kirin, and actually manage to recover and then get the win, because you know how to optimize your playing abilities/job abilities and help the team

and in these respects, having the uber gear means less than knowing what the fuck you're doing

one day vang you'll be level 75 and doin this shit, and at that stage in the game you'll see that having the most uber gear doesn't really matter as much as not being a complete fucktard
