Has any one sat down to realize what were doing with our lives sitting here reading/writing these posts, looking on youtube.. playing Video games.... What has society come to?

Seriously i can't stop thinking about how stupid it really is to play World of Warcraft or play FFXI or any other online game... Or any game for that matter at all, Why are we addicted to something so 'stupid' (don't have another word for it). Think about it... yes its a way to keep in touch with people, yes its a source of entertainment.... But really the 10 minutes i spent typing this message up i could have spent reading a book and expand my knowledge capacity, i could study a foreign language, OR perhaps even go work out AGAIN today.

Where are we going with our lives? Before computers, Before video games, people hung out, went outside to have fun, they didn't sit inside and watch TV for 20+ hours a week or get abnormally obese.

I think ive reached a breaking point, and im just sick of video games in General :|

I don't think that technology is the bane of human existence, no. And I don't think listening or reading others' opinions about things, entertainment or otherwise, is a horrible waste of time.

I also don't think there's anything stupid about amusing yourself in a way that does no harm to anyone else. I play video games - I love them in fact - I'm also a highly educated woman who loves to read and write. I love to work out and I spend a lot of time with my family and friends whom I adore. I don't think I'm the only one who can say these things.

Just like anything else in life - moderation is the key. There will always be people who drink too much, smoke too much, eat too much, do too many drugs, and live on a video game. But there are a lot more people out there living their quiet, full lives happily, and they don't need to be hang-gliding every day, finding a cure for cancer, or filling every single moment of every day with meaningful pursuits to do it.

Someone doesn't know what 'Time Management' is?
This feels like the Chicken Little "The Sky is falling" sentiment.

Better than being addicted to things that greatly affect your health like smoking.

Truthfully, I'll admit I'm addicted, but I still put RL over FFXI if I have to.

This.

Plus, I mightve been bad a few years ago. But now I never prioritize game over RL. I'm at a good spot (except when im on vaca without work >_>)

Ew, I didn't realize I said "they" and not "that" until you quoted me, lol.

But yeah, when I'm on some type of vacation/break/wutever, I'm a FFXI freak.

well some use these as entertainment, which is necessary for human's mental health. going outside is good too, but not everyone enjoy it.

But i do think we might be reaching end of human evolution (sorry, crazy idea lol)

Yes there are those few who can moderate them selves, i can pull my self from a game when some one comes gets me to do something, i work out almost on a daily basis, and if my knees wouldn't have practically given out on me i would have scored like a 96 on my PT test for the Air Force. My point is that there are some people that prefer a fictional world to the real one, and there is so much to see and do, after being in northern California for the past year or so I have seen some pretty sweet shit, i was the first person in my family to be on the west coast or see San Fran/Lake Tahoe.

Some people need to just get up off there ass, turn there computer off, and go out side. When i was coming back from leave over the holidays i saw some one so fat that they had to ride the little car around to get from terminal to terminal, when they got off the car they walked to the counter did there thing and sat down, and ate a Whopper.

I'm so sick of hearing/seeing fat people complain that there fat and do nothing about it(There is the rare reason that it actually runs in there family and they cant do anything about it but they have tried and thats perfectly fine), or people complain they have no friends because they don't get the fuck off there computer.

Look at kids now a days too, they are disrespectful and don't give a rats ass about education. I regret not giving a shit about doing good in high school, and im paying for it.

Change isn't going to happen because one guy says hes going to change it, Stop buying the 52 inch plasma TV, or the Jumbo Shake. Spend money on shit you need, Don't listen to the media the majority of the time because they make shit worst. Like the crap in Gaza right now. The hamma's have been attacking Israel for years, and Israel finally told them to fuck off, what about the Israel Civilians that died from Hamma's Rocket fire.... don't see that on the news much do you?

Todays society... is just plane fucking retarded, sorry if i offended any one with the Giant block of text, im just frustrated with alot of shit in the world.

I wouldn't put blame on video games/computers. Chalk it up to human stupidity. There's a wealth of knowledge online about living healthy. You can network very well on a computer. You can do a lot of things on a computer. But if you're so stupid that you can not manage the rest of your life, well that has been bred from your environment which the majority of is parental influence (or lack thereof).

As soon as people understand the meaning between intake vs output and their own body you'll see healthier civilizations.

But don't give someone shit because they live their life a specific way. They're entitled to. You can feel however you want. And I completely agree with you for the most part. It's just not our place to berate and criticize openly.

I pose a question. Consider Star Trek and their holodecks. They're perfectly capable of sustaining life within one. And you can program infinite imaginary/real landscapes. If you had one, would you ever leave? Be honest about it and think it through. It is a silly question but it's still interesting.

Don't at all think this is video games/computers/tv's fault. Doing so leads to conclusions that suggest sideways answers. You remove a video game/computer/tv a human will only seek to replace those things with something else.

Nothing against you Novolo but I hate it when people question "What/why am I doing this?"

In my opinion there's thinking and then there's thinking too much. It gets worst when I'm in a pub with some friends and 1 of them openly questions "why are we here eating/drinking?"

You can ask the same for all activities and ultimately there's no final answer but "something to do" or "because I like it", etc.

If you don't do this, you'll go do something else, the result is the same.

I'd be Reginald Barclay, for sure. You'd never get me out of the damned thing except to go to work, and then I'd be right back in there making holo-Matt Damon do a dance for me. I play video games and buy DVDs to watch on my big TV because they give me pleasure. It's a very simple answer.

Novolo, if you think video games are stupid, quit playing them. It's fine that you've had this great awakening and realized just how pointless it all is, but that's true of life in general. What did you expect? You don't get a prize at the end for how much you've been level-grinding all these years.

It's best to just keep yourself amused until you die and alleviate the angst.

Yes, but what's more annoying is that once someone realises "oh this is pointless", moves on to do something else, and moments later they tell me it's equally pointless.

And then as I said earlier, there's thinking about something, and then there's thinking too much about something. This is where people become suicidal and/or emo. Our current QCDN celebrity of the month is currently like this.

There's a reason it's called the idiot box.

And yes, the world (mostly the U.S.) faces massive (pun intended), and morbid issues with obesity. While it may piss you off that someone is in that situation, and yes, those people do have every opportunity and choice to do something about it, that is their situation though. They didn't wake up obese one day, and that problem won't go away in a day either. It takes a lot of hard work and discipline. Many folks facing such an issue see this as daunting, as they can't even predict an end. Thing is, there is no "end", only change. Only lifestyle. The end they would dream about finding, and suddenly being slim again, is a pipe dream. It's actually the beginning of another cycle that they failed to break.

While it might upset you that other people do this or that, you've got no say over it given the stance you take. If it really pisses you off,why don't you spend more than 10 minutes posting about it, and do something to help the cause, and help the people? Answer that question. Though people are in a given situation and technically have every freedom to get out of it (and likely shouldn't have gotten into it to begin with) doesn't mean that they see or feel that they do have that freedom. Or they may feel that it is an impossible task. That's where you can help them...

Which leads me to what pisses me off. Hopefully there's no need for me to detail any of that for you.

This, I have a problem with. Theres no such thing as a good addiction. I mean, imagine all the people that take MMOs too far "Atleast this is better than being addicted to cigarettes," as they chug down 3 red bulls for a raid at 4 AM, or constantly snack on Doritos or Cheetos or whatever the fuck they snack on and plow through Mountain Dew while sitting on their asses and grinding 8+ hours a day, 7 days a week, never getting up except to use the bathroom. If you're not in either of these situations, then no, you're not addicted. Just because you spend more time than you'd like to doing something doesn't mean you're addicted to it. You just enjoy it too much. There is a difference.

I'd rather someone think too much than never think at all. There's nothing wrong with taking stock and realizing you're not happy. I'm just amused that this topic is coming up yet again; it seems to be an annual event, and now it's just a matter of watching another slow horse cross the finish line. The only difference is now it's attached to a message that was driven home with a sledgehammer in Wall-E.

"Get away from the screen and step outside, you fat babies!"

Never heard that one before.

My idea of what I said was that thinking is fine, but thinking beyond some area which causes you to go retarded/mental/insane/suicidal is not. I'm not asking you to not think at all, but rather accept that there goes a point when anything will mean anything at all if any. Basically instead of doing something which provide you with some form of relaxation/enjoyment, you instead sit there wondering the ultimate point to life or the point of whatever activity you are doing at the time, all in the end, for nothing but to pass time/wait for something better to do. But if thinking about things like this (point in life, point to X activity, ultimate point to life, beyond the milky way, god, jesus, budda, afterlife, kidneys, chicken/egg), to pass time is what you like doing, go for it, don't involve me is all I ask for unless I also happen to be bored and am willing to discuss with you for the sake of passing time/have a laugh... (see where this is going...?).

I'm capable of thinking about things like this but I'm also capable of not caring at all because I ultimately know there is really no answer down the very end.

Skaw nailed it good with his post about enjoying stuff as well, seperating the differences.

And like Sneakypants added, it will piss you off more in the end (if I'm correct in assuming what he meant, I think. Might need a PM clarification about his last line...?)

Its a hobby, like I played MTG card game in my spare time before consul video games or now a mmorpg like FFXI. As long as I do all the other important things in my life my free time is pretty much as I see fit to run it.

Sitting infront of video games for hours on end everyday or every other day REALLY does greatly affect your health =)

Ask my eyes, ask my knees, the circulation in my legs is pretty crap and sitting playing video games worsens that. The carpel tunnel (sp) in my wrists from computers and video games..yeeaaa.

HOWEVER, I love my games, and like what Zyn said it comes down to moderation. What a smart lady that Zyn.

I'll admit I was completely addicted to FFXI when I played (although not at the end). However, now I go to the gym pretty much every day, my Uni work gets done and I read a lot. It's all about managing your time, something I used to be useless at but have recently got a lot better with.

I'll clarify. No PM needed.

OP posts about shit that pisses him off. One thing is that he rants at fat people, which I dove into a bit. If it's fat people or any of the other situations he's described in this thread or just about any other thread he's ever created, there's always been a higher ground he could have taken. He's always been able to do more than he's done by creating a complaint thread, including any details of how he handled situations...Than simply bitch and moan about it on the Internet...Which happens to be one of the things that pisses him off. I realize the irony in "wasting" time on the Internet, yet having to use it to send out the message in your head to others. It's funny.

My point being, regarding what pisses me off (as much as I can actually be angry with this, lmao), is seeing an OP like this. An OP that's given a topic some thought, and apparently he "thinks too much". I have to strongly disagree. Again, take inventory of his other posts and recognize that they are all in the same vein. He's not thought about these things all that much. In fact, if he thought about them more, and truly applied moderation, then he would do more about these situations that piss him off rather than simply bitch. At the very least, he would maintain a more neutral emotion towards it all, having given it any amount of real thought.

Sure, a bunch of the topics he brings up are bullshit and need fixing. This guy is NOT someone that thinks too much. Not enough would be accurate. Mature thought would transport him from his current mindset.
