If you are so naive to say that New Orleans did not deserve what happened, get fucked.
That city was the most disgusting city I have ever been too.
o-m-g that has to be one of the most ignorant statements i have ever heard. When did you go Krono? During mardi gras maybe, or perhaps Southern Decadence? Even during those events the majority of the city and it's surrounding areas functions like a normal place. Art, Music, Food, Cajun/Creole culture, and history all flourished in that city. There is a lot more too it than the french quarter, and there is a lot more to the french quarter than Bourbon st. Also note, the people who participate in these events are TOURISTS, many natives of the city often LEAVE TOWN for Mardi Gras because it's so overcrowded, loud and annoying. The people you are using to judge the city are for the most part not from it and may very well come from your own town.
Looting: As far as I am concerned if it was food stuffs (including candy) or clothing or mattresses from the hotels, it was fine. Hell, even alcohol (except wallgreens guys, it’s a dry store) would be understandable, who the fuck would want to be sober in that hell hole. The majority of looters I think fell under the category of need. BTW the 2 Walgreens they showed the majority of footage of had at least 2 rows dedicated to food and bottled drinks. The ass holes who took electronics, medication (though who knows, maybe some of that was out of need as well... not like you can get hopped up on blood pressure meds) and of all things GUNs... I hope they drop dead, because they have made out anyone who tried to fend for themselves into nothing more but another looter.
In regard to people ‘refusing’ leaving the city, and just sitting it out... if you go to the “reality sucks” area, you will see that some of the people who play this game said they were just going to “ride it out”. I personally know Zaltana and his Girl Friend, and you know what, I bet if they could have gotten out they would have. “I’m just going to ride it out.” is mostly said by people who cannot get out, and don’t want to make it out to be something they are forced to do.
Fact: 65% of the city is African American.
Fact:: 26.59% of the population is Caucasian.
That leaves ~10% more who are mostly made up of people who look black but call themselves Creole, along with Vietnamese, a handful of Latino’s, and scattered other ethnic groups.
Fact: New Orleans is one of the poorest cities in the nation.
Fact: The majority of people use public transit to get around because they cannot afford cars.
Fact: the majority of the population lives check to check and doesn’t have credit cards which are a requirement to rent cars.
Fact: Most of the cars available in the city were gone by Saturday night.
For those of you who want to make this an issue of race, look at the demographics of the area first. Yeah, the majority of the people that were still in the city were of a “minority group” but they happen to be the majority group in the city. Most of the wealthier people live in suburbs of the city, or are people who work at the colleges and hospitals. Those people have cars, they have means to make it out, not because of their race but because of their education and situation... because they were, for the most part, imports to the city. If you have lived in New Orleans all your life, chances are you got a shitty education, lived in a piss poor family, and are piss poor yourself, regardless of the color of your skin. This supercedes race.
Mandatary evacuation wasn’t called until Sunday. Many people who had waited until Sunday morning ended up turning around and not being able to get out at all because of traffic. Personally I helped a family find a different way out before cell phones became completely useless. To the political issues of this situation, the mayor should have mobilized the RTA busses to get people out and Baton Rouge or Alexandria should have set up a tent city of sorts. The levee systems themselves should have been better made, we were going to get hit by a cat 4+ someday. There are lots of things that *should* have been done, but frankly I don’t think now is the time to talk about that
and even when it is time to talk about how things could have been done better, it should be within the context of “how are we going to make this better next time” not “Oh wow, y’all fucked up big time.”
The signature is tasteless, but whatever... The quoted comment above is repulsive... Are you going to say that a 3rd world nation’s city deserves to be wiped off the map because it is dirty? Because they have questionable things go on
every day, as apposed to 2 times a year? Are you going to say that Mississippi and Alabama also deserved to get hit? Because New Orleans isn’t the only place that got destroyed here. What about the other areas in LA? Grand Isle, the low land towns. You are a fucking ignorant bastard, something that should not be even compared to humans... no human could wish this on another. /ignore and /blacklist add
