I'll lurk here for the next week probably just to correct if I missed anybody and say my good-byes on a more personal basis. I wish you all the best and don't let the same thing happen to yourselves, remember at the end of the day you won't get $5 million dollars for your achievements, nobody will thank you for your contributions to vana'diel societies unless it's scripted, and FFXI IS JUST A GAME.
P.S. In case anybody was wondering, yes, I did buy gil.
It takes a lot to get on my nerves but iaredrew's quitting post just rubbed the wrong way. Ok dude we get it, you don't want to play anymore. Great, quit. But don't go on in your good times goodbye post and tell everyone that plays FFXI they're less of a human than you. You're fucking arrogance at the fact that you think you figured out the secret to life is quitting FFXI is repulsive. Some people can play a game as just a game. You obviously couldn't. But, hey, I guess you figure you'll shed some light onto the people who are lost because they still play the game that took over your life. Get off your fucking soapbox and stop trying to lecture when you can't pass the class.

first off, in before anyone else and lol @ the " iaredrew and i are buyz teh gil" part of his post.
second off its funny that he suddenly found RL at the age of what, 13?

Sounds like the dude was bitter...if that's how he signed off. The fact that he bought gil proves that. Not the way I would've went out...could care less what he wrote before because what he wrote last stuck to me.

I probably wouldn't have noticed it if you didn't post it on FB lolz

Maybe it's me, but I don't see him saying anywhere "Hey fuckos, as long as you're playing this game you're wasting your lives!!!1 Quit being losers and get a real life before it's too late." What I do see is him saying nothing more than POL says every time you log on basically. He recognizes he let the game take over his life personally and is cautioning others against letting the same happen to them. I don't see anything arrogant in admitting you let something control you and not wanting it to happen to others you know or care about.

What would concern me is the "it's just a game" followed up by the "yeah, and I bought gil." Because yeah, it's just a game, but let's spend actual money so we can succeed in it... Seems a bit like do as I say, not as I do, but whatever I guess.

I think you are looking too deeply into this.

I think you took what he said way too personally. Maybe some of you did. That was a general statement and first-hand realization of what could happen when you ignore this:

I've seen people leave for nearly all the reasons listed in SE's PSA about this game.

I won't go into details, but I'm another victim that has let a game, A GAME, take control and ruin a lot of aspects of their lives. I can't do it anymore, it's taken me this long to realize that this should be a hobby at best and not a lifestyle.

I'll lurk here for the next week probably just to correct if I missed anybody and say my good-byes on a more personal basis. Also it's not the first time someone has said that in a Goodbye Good Times thread. So why flame about it now when you've seen people off and on QCDN leave for whatever reason (sometimes related to this one)? All he did was give a friendly warning about what could happen if you don't prioritize you life. Kinda reminds me of the movie "Never Been Kissed" in the end when Drew Barrymore gives that speech about popularity at the high school prom she was at.

Now if you let what he said strike a nerve in you, I'm sorry but that's your own problem not iaredrew's problem.

I'm not sure what you mean here but I don't see anywhere in iaredrew's goodbye post that he was bitter about anything. If there was any part of being upset he was mad at himself for not prioritizing.

I'm quitting alcohol I wish you all the best and don't let the same thing happen to yourselves, remember at the end of the day you won't get $5million dollars for out drinking your friends, nobody will thank you for your contributions to the bar's tip jar
It takes a lot to get on my nerves but this guy's quitting post just rubbed the wrong way. Ok dude we get it, you don't want to drink anymore. Great, quit. But don't go on in your good times goodbye post and tell everyone that drinks they're less of a human than you. You're fucking arrogance at the fact that you think you figured out the secret to life is quitting alchohol is repulsive. Some people can control how much they drink, and don't let it ruin their lives. You obviously couldn't. But, hey, I guess you figure you'll shed some light onto the people who are lost because they still drink alchohol that took over your life. Get off your fucking soapbox and stop trying to lecture when you can't pass the class.
There's a decent percentage of people who let ffxi take over their lives, and he seems to only be giving advice specifically knowing his condition wasn't unique. You wouldn't insult the alcoholic or smoker or pothead who quit and decided to warn others about its dangers by mentioning how there's plenty of people who do those and live normal productive lives.

He said that he let ffxi take over his life, but now he's over it. This means while in a state of letting "ffxi control his life" he bought gil, later on he realized "it's just a game" and no longer buys gil (evidenced by the fact he doesn't even play). I don't see any hypocrisy in his statements.

It's pretty thoughtless placement at the very least. If you're trying to make an impression on people about how "it's just a game," you're not exactly getting your point across by wrapping up with "I bought gil." That's like listening to an alcoholic talk about the dangers of alcohol then finishing up with "There's a great sale every Tuesday at Liquor Square."

He only mentioned he bought it, didn't seem to advocate or recommend it, odds are he probably regrets it now that he quit (especially if he's not rich and spent a good chunk of money). I think he was more than anything wanting to get it off his chest. It'd be more like the same alcoholic saying "I used to drink every Tuesday at Liquor Square" without mentioning the "great sale" part.

Meh. Doesn't matter to me either way, he's not someone I know. I'm simply saying if he's trying to tell people not to let the game control them, ending with that statement doesn't drive home the point. I personally think it weakens the point he was trying to make by ending with that statement. I'm not really looking to delve into whether he regrets it or not or feels bad about it or not; I'm not that interested. I'm going strictly off what was in his post.

I like how he called it "Just a game" and then spends money on Gil. How much is gil anyway, IIRC it is like 40 dollars for a mil.

some people are really looking into his post way too deeply, like someone already said. This is ridiculous to even point out...

He bought gil, he quit, and isnt wasting valuable man hours playing FFXI anymore.

I dont really see the problem here..
