4Kids Entertainment now currently being delisted from the NY Stock Exchange.

When Pokemon first came to the US people complained enough about Jynx until the character's colors were changed in the game and in the anime. Carole Boston Weatherford (African American author and critic) complained about both Jynx and Mr. Popo in Dragon Ball Z. The Dragon Ball managa involved a reduction of the size of his lips. Evidently barely a decade ago people still had a problem with it and I'll guarantee that they still do. Still not convinced? Go to cnn.com and type "blackface" in the search bar.

The article that I posted just shows what "blackface" and "jim crow" mean to people even now. People do still care about it today and the anime companies do get crap about it. Just because it doesn't offend you personally doesn't mean that it doesn't offend the people that it is mocking. Every anime company has changed something when it translates an anime into English not just 4Kids.

I'm not saying people DON'T have a problem with it, I'm saying people are getting stupid having a problem with it. Especially when I don't think those characters really do anything acting offensive. One could argue Mr. Popo cause he's kinda "serving Kami/God" but I think that'd be a stretch. And Jynx doesn't even really have a personality...

I'm saying people need to get the stick outta their ass and stop assuming everything in everything is racist for one reason or another. Who cares if the character is black and has big lips? Who cares if he'd be White, Yellow, Red, etc. Same reason I find it stupid people frown at the power rangers cause the asian girl was the yellow ranger, black ranger was black, etc. Who cares. They didn't even consciously mean to do that they've said. People are over sensitive over nothing. Now if the characters THEMSELVES were offensive in actions/personalities and EVERY other character who looked like that was offensive. Then I might agree there's a problem.. but based on looks alone? god damn. Specially since it's anime that tend to be far from realistic anyways.

It's not stupid for getting offended about it. It's stupid for people to say that they shouldn't get offended by it. My friend who is taking drama had a elder who had to act in plays as blackface (he was light skin) just to put down his own race. He takes offense to blackface and has a good reason too. He also uses that as inspiration to be an actor. That's like making fun of the holocaust and not expecting some Jews to get offended. And didn't we just learn our lesson about making fun of certain things when South Park did a Muhammad reference? I don't completely agree with people getting offended over certain things but people do and you can't expect to no get shit from it. And it doesn't have to just act offensive, it still looks offensive.

What you talking about Ele? Jynx is like the most racist thing ever.

This right here exemplifies what everyone has been saying. What you think, what you don't think, not everyone thinks that way.
Seriously, saying something like that is one of the most selfish things I've read. "I don't think it's racist, everyone else should shut up!". That's what you come off as.

Well seriously, what have the characters been doing IN THEIR ACTUAL PERSONALITY AND ACTIONS that would be racist? Not the way they look.. ok? Bring an example, no one has. By saying "I think" I really more mean "I think back and can't recall them ACTING racist"

But it sounds like you're all shallow as fuck only carrying about their appearances in cartoons where no one is drawn really realistic anyways. "They look offensive" boo hoo stfu and stop getting a stick up your ass every time you think something is offensive for something stupid and shallow as appearance. What made blackface really offensive back then, as I have checked up on, was also the way the character was portrayed acting and whatnot. The character was offensive more than just the look.

It said "take care of your baby" how racist do you want Jynx to be until it's deemed acceptable racism!?

Didn't I already cover this?

You don't have to just fucking act racist to be racist. If I were to dress like a Arab with a shirt on that had the twin towns on fire, that wouldn't be racist? Just because I'm not saying anything racist or acting racist then I'm good?

I don't remember Jynx saying crap in Pokemon, but I guess it's more cause I haven't played the games since pokemon red and haven't watched really any of the series. If they said that, lame, but it sounds like you're still looking for racism where there most likely isn't. I'm still going to always say "people need to take the dick outta their ass and stop assuming the worst everywhere" in this kinda situation. You people seem to be the ones claiming all this shit is racist when the characters themselves never even show real racism or anything offensive to anyone :\

Edit: I swear, you people like to look for problems where there really aren't any... just like other typical anal stupid Americans :\ stop thinking everything is negative!!!

Elemmire, I don't get to say this enough:

shut the fuck up, you don't know what you're talking about.

Right? No one takes this offensive? We're just seem like people do?

Who's saying we're assuming the worst? I don't find any blackface shit offensive personally but OTHER PEOPLE DO. Seriously get the fuck over yourself and admit that not everyone in the fucking world doesn't take shit offensively. I'm half-tempted to insult you every single chance I get and see if you get offended by it. Jesus fucking christ I don't know why I waste my time on people like you.

And don't talk about yourself that way =/.

I'm tired of anime portraying white people has having no lips around their mouths. 4kids, I'm going to sue the fuck out of you if you don't add lips to all the white characters.

Go for it!

What I find funny is, I never really got what the big deal was about blackface until this thread. I just thought it was a funny looking black person. Now that I think about it though, I dont think I've ever seen a black person in anime not portrayed that way.......hmmm

Exactly lol. Another thing I thought was funny:

The black skin. The long, blonde hair. The big red lips. The wiggly hips. Is it any wonder that people have found a racist black stereotype in Pokemon #124, Rougela (Jynx)? Here's an article reprinted from the "Black World Today" website. After a brief introduction, the accusations begin. (cutting some out)

The character Jynx, Pokémon #124, has decidedly human features: jet-black skin, huge pink lips, gaping eyes, a straight blonde mane and a full figure, complete with cleavage and wiggly hips. Put another way, Jynx resembles an overweight drag queen incarnation of Little Black Sambo, a racist stereotype from a children's book long ago purged from libraries.

While my 10- and 12-year olds do not find Jynx offensive, their parents and grandparents do. We call a spade a spade. And we have seen enough racist stereotypes to know one when we see it. There was room to debate whether "Star Wars: Episode One's" Jar Jar Binks was West Indian, but there is no question about this Pokémon character. Jynx clearly denigrates African Americans, particularly black women. At the close of the 20th century, how could Japanese computer animators unleash such a culturally insensitive menace on the global marketplace?

And about a decade ago, a high-ranking Japanese official attributed Japan's low crime rate to the country's lack of ethnic diversity, blaming African Americans for the high crime rate in the U.S.

So I am not surprised, though I am appalled, that a computer animator at a Japanese corporation would conceive of Jynx and that corporate executives would deem the character appropriate for multiracial markets. Even Jynx's name-a variation on the term "jinx," which means a bearer of bad luck-has negative connotations. In addition, the name Jynx suggests a link with witch doctors and voodoo, practices rooted in African religion but often ridiculed by Western culture.

In connection to this, I think Mexicans are also protrayed with pouty lips etc, minus the blackface (call it brownface).........Think I have a phone call I need to make to my lawyer =P

I don't recall anyone here saying they have a problem with it.
What people are saying is that they can recognize where people can take offense. You seem to be unable to differentiate between the two, but I really wouldn't expect anything more from a person who demands everyone else carry the same opinion as them.

If you guys were Japanese, then you'd be right and I'd totally agree with you on this topic.

However you're all worthless Americans therefore your arguments are invalid.

Just cause I am American doesn't mean I can't see faults the mindset other Americans have (well granted considering they are mindsets it is an opinion they are faults but when you look for problems that aren't necessarily there that's negative thinking and most would agree that's never good). If you people aren't taking offense to it, fine, but you've been portraying off that you were offended by it and all of it had to be changed and whatnot. None of you really came off like you weren't offended by it or this wasn't a sin against black people or whatnot. Seriously, go read your own damn posts and see if you wouldn't think that someone writing that same post isn't offended by this. Granted, you'll prolly say you can clearly see there was no offense and bullshit like that but cause it's your posts, you're going to be biased about it and say that it was obvious what you meant when it wasn't.

And even if others are offended and not you, I'll still say they need to stop getting offended over things that DOESN'T MATTER TO THEM. If they aren't even interested in the show (as most people who bitch about shit these days tend to not be even interested in the game, movie, show that so called "offended them") then they shouldn't bother. If they're worried kids might get the wrong idea well, that's what educations is supposed to be for! Educate them yourselves if they're your own kids or just don't let em watch, play, read, whatever the stuff that you find offensive. But don't try and police everything cause you don't like it :|
