"Who's the greater fool? The fool, or the fool who follows him?"
Lol at the MMO gamer write-off. Sweetie (and that's in the diminutive sense of the word, not the endearment), gamers or not, each and every post on these boards - aside from the automated bots that show up now and then - happens to be written by a real person. With a brain of varying quality, and opinions of their own.
It's not so much that what you did was take fictional items from a fictional character. Oh noes, horrors, who cares - that's your argument, and it's a fine one (one many of us could disagree with, but it's a justifiable opinion). It's not, however, really the issue here. The real issue is that you would, even temporarily and later making up for it, do something hurtful to someone who trusted you as a friend.
The other, later, issue is that now that you've given back the fictional shinyz, your friend is so thick-headed that he still wants to be friends with you, despite that you've already demonstrated that you can and have hurt him. It's kinda like the friendship version of a domestic abuse relationship. "Oh, it was only that one time, he'll never do it again." Riiiiiiiight.
Extra stupidity points to your friend for not only that, but calling out everyone who rather reasonably criticized his actions. Because he obviously knows better than all of them (at least in his mind, I think the audience at large might have a different view), and they're therefore all hateful jerks for pointing out obvious and sensible advice.
The MMO shinyz? Who cares. I'm certainly not sympathetic to him about them any more - past experience has taught me that the effort of sympathy goes to waste, if directed at someone with a painful lack of common sense. Such as Kaptain.
