Now, as for someone saying you can build a better computer for half the price now, that is very hard to do these days. You obviously haven't checked the prices of individual pieces of hardware versus buying a complete machine. You can get an HP desktop with an Athlon X2 3800+, DVD burner (with light scribe), 1gb memory, keyboard, mouse, and 250gb SATA harddrive for about $690 after $50 mail in rebate. I would like to see you build a similar machine that comes anywhere near that price. The processor alone sells on newegg for $295, and I didn't even mention a motherboard in the list above.
Actually you said it all right there. The problem with prebuilt computer systems is that you get a couple of snazzy features to help you overlook everything else.
You get a 250gh SATA HD but what brand and what speed? You get 1gb Memory, again what brand and what speed? You can have both these things but their speed is important. They usually don't give you a top of the line product. You can get a TOL Item for more, yes, but you get it.
You also get On board Graphics and an On board sound card. Not always the best. They usually cut corners here to make up for the expenses. Even if they use a seperate graphics card, usually its a cheapo.
How do I know this? before I learned how to fix computers and do things myself I purchased a Sony Vaio "Gaming/Digital Studio" Machine. The first game I tried to play wouldn't work because the graphics card did not support 3d Imaging.
I pulled it out and looked on ebay just for the hell of it and guess what? it was a card that went for $8-$12, my motherboard /w onboard sound $50-75. 1.8Gh Processor about $150-200 at the time. DVD-Drive (not even a recorder) - $40-50. 2x256 RAM - Brand was $20 a stick. 80 gig HD apprx 7200rpm $40.
My PC was worth $328 to $417 (+$200 for windows) I payed about $1500 for it not including the monitor or printer. Not really worth it, especially since I practically had to upgrade the whole thing to make it compatible with most new games that had come out the same year the PC had come out.
Best Buy CS sucks all over. Not just in Canada. The Employees, for the most part (including management) Scatter like roaches when the light hits them any time a customer comes into view. Famous BB Phrase? Oh this isn't my department and run along.
Here is something to add to that, You don't need to have an incentive to do your job. (Not the person who originally posted this but someone else made a comment about incentive). You have a job to do, that is why you work there. If you don't want to do your job, find something else to do. Why are you going to give piss poor customer service and agrivate yourself because you feel your services are worth more?
If you truly are worth more, why not find a job that pays what you feel, that is if they feel you are worth it as well? When they ask you the question "What does customer service mean"? Are you going to say "Uh, well, Uhm I work at best buy so we just let the customers service themselves"? That could be why you still work where you do lol.
Sorry I am a Store Manager and poor customer service always Irks me.
