Checking *bum bum bumm*

You're all just echoing the same 2 points over and over again.

1: It doesn't bother you personally
2. There is an option to filter it if you don't like it.

No this isn't what i'm echoing.

I'm saying they shouldn't be getting offended by it in the first place, as there is not a single reason to be offended by an in-game option. Should we all go around asking permission to /poke or /wave or /sea ?

This is really ridiculous. lol

The /poke or /wave interaction is fundlementally different than /check or blind invite.

That said in certain context waving to someone might be considered rude. Like waving and poking a dead body for example. With all things people will develop certain rules of thumb about them.

I'm saying they shouldn't be getting offended by it in the first place, as there is not a single reason to be offended by an in-game option.

I'm paying very close attention to your wording here. You are never challenging the notion that many people are offended, however you simply imply that they means their values are wrong.

The point being, it's silly by your standards. But that's your standards and yours alone. Isn't saying please and thank you silly too? I mean there's no reason to thank someone in game for helping you, considering all they did was select in game abilities? But at the end the chances are if someone spends time to help you, hopefully you thank them. If nothing else as a sign of respect.

I honestly don't see the comparison between my helping somebody in the game (Which requires my personal time and effort), and doing a /check on somebody, which requires absolutely no interaction with said person at all.

Like somebody said earlier, sounds like people don't like it when somebody can do something to them without their control, and they want to complain about it.

You shouldn't be getting offended (at all) by somebody /checking you

Period

It's downright foolish

I'd like to second this. I realize I simply can't please everyone in the world, so i'm not gonna go out of my way for the foolish ones.

I will check almost anyone I see around, just because I'm interested in equipment, what people use and what it looks like.

If I'm in a party with you, I will check you and I will check you again if you change your gear at any time, because I like to know what the people I am relying on are wearing.

I see no reason why someone could be offended by a single line of text that says "/em examines you.". Comparisons to real life, such as 'How would you like it if someone came up to you and stared at you' are stupid, because unless you have never played the game before, how can you not know that that simply means that someone is interested in your equipment?

Honestly, anyone who is odd enough to find a single line of text offensive should just turn on the filter as I believe they are in the minority. It's a simple solution, and if they can't make the effort, they have no right to complain.

About asking someone if you can look at them, I did this once and got laughed at for it, before realising myself I did sound stupid doing it.

So /check away people and dont feel ashamed ... unless youre an ass like Roofie and spam check people. I DO NOT ENDORSE SPAM CHECKING

The mentality that it is offensive to Japanese cultur is complete and uter bullshit, if that were the case it wouldn't be in the game. Plain and simple, the game was developed by Japanese primarily, released in Japan first where it still had the /check ability. If this really was so taboo in Japanese culture it would have never been in the game.

As for the "Why not ask first?" question, it's just plain stupid to ask. if there wasn't a /check function then it would be very reasonable to ask someone what they were wearing, but the fact is there is a /check function which doesn't require me to ask anyone. Asking to check takes time, and if they are just running by, unless you decide to turn around just to see some of there equipment, you might not get the chance the check them. It's foolish to ask or require that someone asks plain and simple because it's a needless inconveince.

There is still no reason why the person getting mad at being checked has a reason to be mad. You can say its rude all you want, maybe it is, but you havent shown why it is considered rude. If there was no notice at all that your gear was being looked at, do you think people would be so testy about it? No, because they would have no idea (unless you get a random tell afterwards asking for gil/help/why your equipment sucks).

So why dont people just turn on their filter? Is it so they will have something to bitch about? Because there still isnt a good reason outside of "some people consider it rude." Whats next? Am I going to stop using my sneeze macro because someone thinks its rude to spread online germs?

I'm not gonna continue a personal fight between you and me firestreak, I dont really care what you think of me. I've actually stopped leveling a while ago and I'm probably gonna cancel my account soon, not because people dont like me, but because I'm losing interest in the game. People do take this game way too seriously, and those people make the game just not fun. And yes, I do find this among the higher level people, but not all higher level people are like this. I do find a lot of rude lower levels too, but mostly these people just dont know any better. Anyways this is all better for another topic and I'm not really going to go into it any more.

Again, I fell I must stress the fact that this is a game. Whenever we take it too seriously, things get messed up.

-Ham

They're in your party, like it or not. I do believe the leader would benefit from a silent check of people looking for party, but that's not the topic of this discussion. When I give a party member strategy advise I usually ask if it's ok first to give them advise, seeing as just barking orders can be considered offensive. Just the same simply asking if you can check if their gears are alright isn't too much of an inconvieniance. If their performance is lacking due to a lack of good gear or strategy then comes the time to stop being the nice guy.

If you are interesting in equipment, why not ask? If you know it may be considered rude? Don't confuse the issue. The issue isn't if checking is rude. It's if it's rude to not ask first.

About asking someone if you can look at them, I did this once and got laughed at for it, before realising myself I did sound stupid doing it.

Of all the bogus crap. People are endorsing that anyone who's a dick to be offended by check is not worth knowing, but you're going to argue that you don't want to piss someone off by asking them to be checked?

You are just blatently wrong here. It is offensive to many Japanese, I know this for a fact. However many won't be vocal to you about it although a few will.

If there was no notification message for /check, I would agree with you whole heartedly. However the fact remains there is, and that seems to have been added into the coding for a reason.

Loss of control, someone stated, there is a way to look at the mentality. When people check me I get the same eerie feeling in my head like back in 2nd grade when my friend used my crayons without asking. They were my crayons. I wouldn't have minded him using them. Why didn't he just ask me? It's the kind of thing that I don't care enough about to begin any confrontation, but I acknowledge to myself that something rude has taken place.

You'll find in life many times people will be offended by what seems childish. For example I had a friend who would flip out if you tried to correct her mispronounciation of certain words. To me it was silly, but to her it was important, so I never pushed that button because there was simply no reason to.

Yes this is a game, and no I don't take it too seriously. Simply if the question is brought to me if random checking is considered rude, I would say yes. If you want to argue with me about its merits, I will explain the pathway I am following.

Something is rude, because for whatever reason, the person you are doing something to, does not like it.

I'd simply say this. If someone checked me, and then right after asked me for help with something. The chances of me saying yes are nearly next to zero. Take that information as you will. That's just how I feel, and that's my right.

Firestreak, I wasnt arguing with you or trying to prove a point, I was stating my opinion on the matter of checking. I have no absolutely no desire to influence your opinion at all.

Really? prove it, state your actuall proof, and it had better not be, "I just know."

edited for damn php code.

so if they have their bazaar up, is it ok to check without asking as long as i look in their bazaar? or do i have to ask to check to see their bazaar? i say filter it out, there's a good reason for the filter, for people to use it!

also i heard a rumor that when you check a japanese player, and they have the jp POL the check message says something like:
>>playerx looks you up and down, or something suggestive..

just my 2 cents

No, it doesnt say looks you up and down, there was a big thread on allakhazam about it and in the end, a JP player confirmed that it simply translated as '<player> looks at you'. Nothing especially rude or leery.

My opinion...

First off, I filter /check messages. I see no reason why I should know if someone checks me. (I do keep the bazaar filter off, though, as I like to know when someone is looking at my wares and then if I'm running I can slow down a bit so they can shop.)

Now, do I ask before checking? No. I just check whever I feel like checking. If they get offended, they can tell me, and I can say that I'm sorry and try to avoid checking that person in the future.

I believe there have been only one or two times someone actually got annoyed at me checking them. It's not a common occurence.

And for the record, I'd like to say I get more annoyed by people -asking- to check me than people just checking me without asking... >.>

My best friend in game is Japanese. I just asked her about this. And she said when people check her it makes her feel bad. As well she said her LS talks about it sometimes and they don't like it.

I also suggest you read what Nasya said, because unlike other people who are just assuming, she actually speaks Japanese and has been in Japanese linkshells.

You have not given me a clear reason as to: Why not ask someone if it's ok to check them?

Simple answer for me. The number of people who are offended are outnumbered by the people who aren't. It's easier to save "I'm sorry I offended you" for those rare times than it is to say "May I check you?" every time. I recognize some are offended by it, but the bottom line is I don't care.

My JP ingame friend in Leviathan is Ruiko - she also feels badly when checked...infact she was the one who told us that it said something along the lines of "/em looks you up and down"

Just because someone doesn't tell you they are offended, it does not mean they are not offended. I am checked nowadays, specially in low level areas, way way way too often to make a stink about it. In fact, during the process of writing this post, my RDM was checked twice in Qufim. And once by a rank 7(he also was shouting for party(and once in party shouting for a tank), smells like an account buyer).

I hate not giving credit where it's due, but I do recall someone mentioning a problem of Japanese women on trains being sexually assaulted and not crying out. Like "silent suffering" seems to be part of their mentality.

please tell me you aren't comparing apples to rotten, dirty, stinky oranges.

one has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

and just to keep this civil, these are my opinions and I dont want them to influence your opinion of me firestreak, as we've partied in the game a few times and i think you're a great player. :)

Hehe thx, and yes civil is good sometimes

But I'm not trying to draw a comparison between sexual assault and checking someone, simply show a parrallel of a culture that tends to keep silent of what they may feel is an injustice. Obviously the magnitude is hugely different, I'm just citing precidence.
