It's difficult to find any real, useful discussions and information in this section due to the massive mess that it's in at the moment. It needs moderation, if not by the current mods then by appointment of one or more new mini-mods.

As far as i'm aware, it's QCDN's newest section addition. It's definitely my new favourite area of QCDN, and it has a lot of potential to become a good area for discussion. Most importantly, it could be a great source of guidance for those newer players, or senior players on the board who are still in need of guidance too. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the more basic and somewhat silly questions that are in the JD section are useful to a select group of the audience, but it doesn't belong with the more advanced questions/discussion that are there, or that I'd like to put there.

What I'm suggesting are some changes to the JD section. The included threads are very messy, hardly any are locked or deleted when they should be, and the more advanced discussion tends to get lost in the jungle of golden discussions such as: "I like DRK because i get to use souleater!!!!!" or (another gem) "is hauby+1 good for sam? i was thinking of getting some useless gloves instead".

I'm proposing a two-part plan to resolve the mess that the JD section is in:

1. Moderation. This could include assigning a new caretaker for the section, or more input from the current mods.

2. Beginner/Advanced sections. This could involve splitting up the section into "Advanced Job discussion" and "Beginner Job discussion" or perhaps "Beginner questions thread" (much like BG). Whole threads don't need to be made for single questions like the ones that have been made. It wastes space, and just makes a big mess. Most of the questions that get asked could be answered in a single sentence, or even a simple Y/N by the people who know what they're talking about on the board.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated. I can't be the only person who's noticed it.

while your skew on beginner or advanced may differ from somebody elses, the only dumb question is the one not asked. im not sure how many players use the mentor system, but i do agree alot of the less important topics to the community could all be answered by a simple guildline sticky, compiled by the more vetren players.

If we have any willing to compile job guidelines by all means. Compile it up and tell us so that we may sticky it.

As for the rest, send me a PM on the details. I would not be opposed to seeing useless threads cleaned up. There is a tendency for those topics to derail a bit x.x;

I really like the idea of a sticky thread on each of the jobs saying something along the lines of "Quick questions answered here" or something along those lines. That way a lot of the simple Hauby+1 or Askar threads would find there place.

IMO, I like DRK because I get to use souleater is a perfectly legitimate response to the why did you level DRK thread, but it wouldn't have much of a place in DRK end game guide.

As far as the SAM thread, I think that its good someone says stuff like that. It allows for other users to say, "hey, this piece of gear is better and here's why". A player without as much experience may not know why the gloves recommendation wasn't a good one, and after the responses from other users, they will. I think that type of stuff is actually good for discussion.

There has been one thread in the DRK section and one thread in the SAM section that have had activity since the liasons were added. There hasn't been a whole lot to moderate. I'd also like to remind everyone about the report post function at this time. ;)

Maybe creation of "Beginner" and "Advanced" tags or something similar would help with that? I don't know that I personally care for breaking up that section of the forum anymore, I think it already has enough subsections.

Could just get rid of the individual sections for each job entirely. Then split it up into Beginner Discussion - Advanced Discussion. Within the Beginner Discussion thread could be a "Random question sticky" in which people can ask the one-liners all they want.

I like this idea. Not anymore sub-forums, just make a thread, sticky it, and all the Quick/Beginner questions go there.

That idea should also iron out the other problems, in theory.

If we get rid of the individual sections, why wouldn't we just use General FFXI discussion and End Game discussion?

I think there are a fair amount of users who have, like, BST levelled and only want to see BST related stuff. If we take away the individual sections, stuff they're interested in reviewing could get lot in the shuffle pretty easily. Didn't you say something about not wanting to sort through a bunch of crap to get to the content? I think that would have the opposite effect.

Having the individual jobs replaced with Beginner Discussion - Advanced Discussion would sort it out. Half the threads that were made could easily fit into a single random-question thread as I said before. If people want to check if their question has already been asked, there's the search function is there not? Provided the answers are given by people with the right answer, they shouldn't go any longer than 2, maybe 3 posts long after the question itself is asked.

Can you give an example of something BST only that couldn't be in the random-question thread? Could easily be a thread made about "Solo spots" or something, but that comes straight from Wiki anyway.

BST was just an example. Its less about BST and more about a user with job x doesn't want to have to sort through threads (or many posts in a single thread) about jobs a, b, and c to find something that pertains to job x. That user may not be looking for a specific question, just looking for something general to read about job x.

Any thread in the BST forum that is longer than 3 or 4 posts wouldn't be a good fit for the random question thread IMO. I am a fan of having it sectioned into jobs.

How do you feel about leaving the current sections and adding beginner and advanced tags?

I definitely wouldn't want to replace all the sub forums with just 2 sub forums. That would be even more of a mess. You'd be best off keeping it how it is.

I think the beginner / advanced forums are a good idea, you could use job specific tags on the front end of the title so people who're only interested in 1 job could skip straight to them, similar to the "WTB" "WTS" "WTT" tags in the AH forum.

It could be coded so that every post requires a tag so no threads will go untagged. That way it will also be easy to code something that filters the tags so people can easily search the forums.

Just tossing that out there.

I think itd be a nice idea if we had a sticky overview for each job and it's common role in the game. Granted, this could be up for debate but we could sticky what the majority of people would agree their jobs role is, and make a note that it isnt all there is to a certain job, but its whats mostly accepted/expected.

Something like Paladin (this is very vague btw): One of the more common tanks for endgame, can take a substantial amount of hits, has various abilities/tools to command hate from a mob. Not the most commonly used job for meritting or high chain exp pts. Most of the subjobs used for this job are: war, nin, rdm, etc.

I think we have too many sub sections for all the jobs and not enough discussion under them. Right now, personally if i had a question about sam gear id rather post in General then to go through the sub sections, also i think i would get more replies/views in another section then i would in there.

Edit: Also, a possible idea is instead of having them split job by job, could seperate them into A) Tank B) Melee/DD C) Support/Healing

But what about jobs that can be classified in more then just one category? RDM/NIN tank? BLU/??? could fit in all three.

Yeah it was just a general suggestion, would need more thinking, but we could do one of two things:

1. Put them in both category with the specific subjob that allows it to be part of that group

2. Or just put what its generally used for.

Ex: Rdm in Support/Healing, and Rdm/Nin in tanking

Ex 2: Just rdm in healing, rdm/nin discussion is appropriate as well.

I like Ex 1 tho

The context of the discussion.

RDM is a mage unless you're tanking with it. (To all: Please do not feel the need to correct me. RDM is not a physical DD, even if considered such, it is only via spells -- once again making it a mage.)
BLU is a melee with magic unless you're tanking with it or attempting to main heal with it.

I am not a fan of the Beginner/Advanced idea. I could see a compromise at functionality (tanking, melee, healing, magic damage, pets) using tags for all the job names.

Yeah itd be sort of to condense the sub sections, kinda like the gaming section

I say the Job Discussion subforums are fine the way they are. They just need people to take the first step and make guides and stuff worth being stickied.

If you have to have the Beginner and Advanced Discussion thing, then Linhjah's tag idea is perfect for that.
