Concerning Adminminship (i think I made that word up)

A certain degree of professionalism and taking things seriously means not always jumping into a conversation to whine and piss and moan with the general population. The board functions. The board has been functioning. The board hasen't had any major shitstorms. There haven't been any major breaches in how the staff handles things on the moral level. There have been no incongruities in how admin/staff handle things. In short, the left hand appears to know what the right is doing. and ... get this ... people are getting along for the most part. If you can't handle that ... i don't know what to say.

Get a tampon.

Oh wait, i did know what to say..
If it's good enough for you, that's great. Keep on keepin' on, and enjoy QCDN. Other people aren't quite as satisfied.
This topic exists. Other topics exist. It's not a major shitstorm, but it's a problem. Maybe not for you, but for others, it seems to be.

It's not that i don't care, it's that i've seen this thread before 3 times now and about 100 clones just like it following suit. 9/10 the same jokers grab hold of the topic and speak with righteous indignation about mods lack of fundamental morals, noticable admin presence, and how they're money was ill-spent donating to a message board on the internet (no shit, einstein), the worst thing i see and it's already come out here is the sense of entitlement posts/threads like this expose in the community. It's sad that you think this little message board deserves every waking moment of someone's attention, it's even more sad that you think it's warranted or deserved based on the community and how they treat each other let alone the staff, in a historical sense.
Honestly, I was talking with one of the mods about making this exact thread recently. Someone else got around to it first.
The "lack of morals" has been entirely corrected, and has neither left my mouth nor crossed my mind in months. How about that. A problem gets fixed, no more complaining.
Lack of admin presence is quite a bit of an issue. Asking for "every waking moment of someone's attention" is idiotic. Asking for more than a quick browse to see if QCDN exists is not.
Spending one's money to help out a website they enjoy isn't poorly spending it, as well, it's rather kind and doesn't deserve criticism. It's also no surprise why they would be upset when they lose features, and the admin doesn't care enough to make it work. Frankly, that's the biggest true gripe I have.

Yea well, i have a problem that you guys have a problem.

Moreover i have a problem you guys are just looking for shit to bitch about for no other reason than to do it, go back, i edited. You have another paragraph to read which explains this.

Here's an idea, go buy a site, get you some phpbb, get your site up, have a fucking blast.

I'm tired of (specificly) you, and and folks like you who just can't leave well enough the fuck alone around here and find themselves entitled to impose on someone who'se doing just fine and dandy at what the job is supopsed to be simply because you don't have someone who's visibly babysitting you and the code at the same time.

I'm not gonna bother turning this into a flamewar. Anyone who's been around long enough knows the score. Good luck with the next mods/admin you choose to bleed dry on patience, kids. Maybe if you're lucky you might get your wish and the whole fucking site will get flushed because it doesn't matter who you pick, no one's competent enough to run this place in the eyes of QCDN (or more notably the 1-5 people who are never satisfied with the staff around here), amirite?

Mods have been rearranged, rules worked out, and lots of things settled. I think you're really rather mistaken. For the most part, I know I can say I am satisfied.

All that's left is someone who is reliable who will perform all necessary maintenance on this site. The only person able to fill that role is a proper admin. Reeve hasn't done this.

No, I don't want someone to sit her spamming F5 20 hours of the day, taking only minor breaks to eat and poo. This appears to be what you're making this out to be, but it's not. Read some of the posts on this Support and Feedback board. Most of them are one-time fixes that have simply piled up over a period of months. Not minutes, hours, days, or even weeks. Issues go back months, because nobody has fixed them.

Quit acting like people here are saying "Waah waah my text has been the wrong color for 10 seconds why haven't you fixed it yet waah"

Apparently i did misunderstand to some extent, my appologies. However the point still stands that that by in large it's an improvement given the history. Please excuse the jump to the conclusion but we all know this is exactly how it starts.

I like RaiderX's idea, personally. Everything works fine... mods do a decent job (hell, a great job, better than I ever did), and while the payment issue is screwed up.. so what. That was back when Sculli wanted to give away free prizes for crap like Ipods and new cars >_>;.

There's always going to be complaints that things aren't fixed. Most of the things are nothing more than nuisances.

I think Raider's points need to be emphasized. The site runs. We can post. We can flame. We can PM. All the forums seem to be in working order. The clock works. The selectable options in the User CP work. Rep system works. Post tracking works. Direct post linking works. All BB commands work.

Thank you.

And I still truly think you guys completely underestimate what it takes to run a forums. Garvin you need to stop complaining, reeves is doing a fine job. It's not like you just click a magical button and everything gets fixed. You need to run shit through FTP, know the folders where things go, and thats just the extreme beginning. I know thats a pretty vauge description, but I don't really know how to explain it, just know that it's not an easy task.

I just don't see where you coming from that things are so terrible here? On the point of your "read the support section and actually fix stuff" I honestly don't know what you mean? You are making the littlest things out to be like its the end of the world. I mean who gives a shit if you got a little window on the bottom of the forums that displays the layout? And as far as the scrolling message at the top... if its that big of a deal switch back to the old layout. I mean it was Nox who added that, and it really isn't worth anything so i don't see any IMEDIATE need for reeve to fix it. Shit he might not even be on the new layout. As long as i can post i'm happy. Also if you read acouple posts in there, the admins DID fix the problems, like This post here Cmdrfly says "The server admins realized this and fixed it. Just before they fixed it, you sent your PM." They are here, they keep shit running, stop whining.

I mean it's not the admins job to run around and post a ton and take care of posts, thats what mods are for. As i said before, as long as the forums are running I feel like the admin is doing there job. Sure Reeve might not be Sculli as far as active and such is concerned, but sculli is fucking gone so get over it

Also, sculli appointed reeve to take over because you need someone whos knowledgeable in IPB and other shit to run these boards. If sculli felt someone from the community was better suited as admin, im sure he would have appointed them.

Edit: Long post is long.

The site runs, but it doesn't run optimally. Things like the scrollbar that hasn't changed in a long time. Getting new boards for new LSes created can be a hassle. These are things that you don't really need an admin to do. If you give 1-2 people the abilities to fix the various odds and ends that get posted about on this particular board (Suggestions thing), that would really be all that's needed. If nothing else (meaning Reeve/Nox intend to keep it up on their own), a weekly or bi-weekly "What's going on?" type topic here would be fine, detailing current known problems ranked in order of severity or in intended order of correction would suffice. Just enough to let us know that complaints/suggestions aren't being ignored.

And no, I have no interest in any type of mod/admin work on this site. I deal with that enough on a weekly basis where I get paid to deal with it, that's sufficient for me.

What scrollbar problem are you talking about, the fact that when pics are posted the boards get all out of whack? As far as i know thats a problem with the theme itself, meaning its probably a crappy theme. Plus that and the scrolling message, and some of the other stuff was all shit Nox came in, added and pretty much left as is. Again, if its that big of deal you can always switch back to the other style.

As far as the forums are concerned, i have no idea. It really shouldn't be that hard to add new forum sections and set the appropriate permissons etc. I do think that is something reeve could fix up a bit. But honestly i don't know what the whole deal with that is.

Yeah 5 days ago? Maybe reeves been busy the last week. Also thats a nox addition, maybe reeve doesn't care about all the new shit and still has the old style on. And i'm not gonna talk on the forum issue cause I don't really know much about it, although i do think it shouldn't be hard for reeve to update that stuff.

Also, i think Nox is/was a shitty admin. All he did was add acouple flashy things, that seem to be causing more problems than they solved and then didn't come back. Thats just my personal opinion. Also it seems you all are blaming reeves for the shit nox did.

On a side note, I do agree with you guys that these things should be fixed and that it is the admins job and they should do it... at the same time though i think you guys need to get off of reeves balls. Like i said in my other post he isn't sculli, this place isn't probably his life, and as far as its running he probably feels thats good enough, and i completely agree. If we can post, its all good to me. At the same time I do feel another admin who was actually here and had some knowledge of board workage wouldn't be a bad idea, if atleast to take care of the Linkshell forums.

I get the whole "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" mentality, but I think adminship requires a little more than simply attending to the technical issues the site has.

It wouldn't hurt Reeve to kind of involve himself in the community a bit. I'm not saying he has to go and buy himself a copy of ffxi, but he could contribute to some reality or GD threads. Familiarising himself with the member base would dispel this idea of him that most people have as this strange man who comes in and plays with code while we sleep. Regular updates on how the site's issues are progressing would be nice too.

Now, an admin who "doesn't have time" to administer to technical problems is just a joke. One that cannot perceivably contribute equally to both sites he is in charge of, isn't stellar either.

Yeah 5 days ago? Maybe reeves been busy the last week.

April 13th, 2007, 06:15 PM

That's 1.5 months they've been requesting an ls forum. They will be done with CoP before they get their board to organize it.

@Elliot: The guys has 470 posts, i think hes doin all right.

@Rappa: Yeah i know thats fuckin old, like i said idk why he isn't doing anything about the LS boards, cause it shouldn't take that long to set them up. The other one though is still only 5 days old though. It seems like reeves was setting up the LS forums just fine though up until mid april... so idk what the deal is.

could just modify moderator powers wouldn't that solve the problem? not all powers of an admin but just a few

Reeve, you lazy slacker, get off your arse right now and do as we please, give us another poor sucker so we can rip him a new asshole too.

Do it now, do it!

We want you to fix the forums, police our bullshit, oh and give us free IPODS to boot. Stop complaining about permission problems it should be a Snap! for you. Ask yourself whats more important? A perfect forum, or a life?

P.S. You could also set up a new name, act like a new admin, be a total dick and tyrant, set up crazy rules and ban people for the stupidist shit, and create all kinda drama and rebellion. Then come back save the day and be loved by all, all over again.

As far as i know, there are 3 levels of members: User, Moderator and Admin. And from there on, im pretty sure you can't set how much access each individual moderator has, other than what section of the forums they are mods over. The most basic of commands would be done through and admin panel, through which you can edit members, add forums, change settings etc, but I think you need to be admin to access that. However, the mods here are able to ban people, which on PHP boards you need to be admin to do, so maybe vBulletin is different as to where you can set different access amount per mod.

So Cmdr, do you guys have access to like an admin panel? I would assume if you do it's limited since if you could, im sure you guys would take care of the LS forums issue. So how do you guys ban people, or is that just an option when you view there profile?

This has been done before. I think a few months back they made some of the mods "Super-mods", which supposedly gave them the power to create linkshell forums amongst other things (I'm not sure as to the extent to their new powers, but I remember one of them did try to create my CoP static forum. It didn't work, but I was very grateful that some action was being taken). I'm not sure what happened there - technical difficulties?

Tenkax, Elei, Neyla and Flymop are still listed as super-mods.

Reeve's post count could of been modified by himself, or he just had a lot of posts in some of the spam topics that were created. I wouldn't really call that contributing though. I recall very few topics that addressed forum problems, or moderator issues in the mod section.

Also, I agree with Garvin's points, and I also feel that being an administrator is more than simply addressing the technical aspects of a forum. I run my own public forum which was previously a "general community forum" and had quite a bit of traffic at one point. I felt it important to have a presence on the boards, and post often to interact with the other members. Topics weren't left ignored especially when they brought up issues regarding the boards, whether they be technical or other didn't matter.

For those that are happy with the boards the way they are, that's fine. Other people however, would appreciate a little more from the administrator rather than a post here and there every month, occasionally addressing an issue when its brought up repeatedly.

I see people wanting improvements to the boards, as well as to the attitude of the administrator towards the community. I see nothing wrong with wanting that.

Its kinda unfair to ask people that support this forum, not to care about about how its currently run.

Super Mod status was given to almost all active mods. All this allowed, was moderation on any board/thread. It didn't allow for permission settings or anything like that.

Oh really? I stand corrected. Though I am still certain that a moderator other than Reeve was given permission to create my CoP forum (though it was so long ago, I cannot remember their name).
