Concerning Adminminship (i think I made that word up)

There was a point when Alyada and Flymop were temporarily made admins, it might of been at that point that your forum was made?

@Zer: Those are also YOUR boards though... little bit different. Although I know where you are coming from, I personally don't think it's needed. I mean, does it really matter if ONE more person is posting? You guys have your opinion, i have mine, but to say hes a bad admin because he isn't super active is a pretty shit poor accusation at best.

Possibly, possibly.

Either way this was the mod status upgrade that I was referring to (Aly and Flymop being made temp admins). It is meagre proof that such a course of action has been tried before. I must've gotten it confused with the "super-mod" thing and just lumped them together. Thanks for clarifying.

Yeah, Fly and I were made temp-admins for a while. We could've, in theory, made LS boards and whatnot but we were given absolutely no instructions on how to do it. I'm just a nerdy kid from the midwest so I didn't automatically just figure it out (and it is a complicated process, at least for me). I think Flymop figured it out but right after he did our adminship was taken away.

Groups are easier to do in phpBB 3 than vBulletin I've found, however phpBB aren't as professional or secure as vBulletin forums are.

I say he's a bad admin because when Miros had a conversation with him via IM, and told him a few posts we needed him to address and respond to, the response was something along the lines of "Does it really matter?" and its that kind of attitude that bothers me. If you don't care about the forum or the community, why keep the position that happens to be the only one that can actually address ALL forum problems? As its been stated, the position should be handed over to someone that does care and will address the issues the community brings up.

(And yes my boards are different, but the boards you see today aren't what they were 2 years ago. Before I added the LS section it was a general community board very similar to this, with much more traffic )

Wanted to quote this for emphasis. Miros posted that on a different topic but I couldn't find it..maybe Miros remembers?

He may have posted it, but I remember bringing it up previously. I was told about the conversation in game by Miros, just a few days before he stepped down from Moderator status. We had been sharing our frustrations about being moderators that could do little to address the issues being brought up.

Does it really matter? I mean seriously, outside of maybe the linkshell boards i haven't seen any real problems that need immediate fixing. Maybe the date issue that was going on, but the admin (reeve) did take care of it so its not an issue anymore.

And again, maybe reeves isn't as dedicated to the forums as others could be, but who else has the skills to run these boards? If the site had a database error and went down, it doesn't matter how "dedicated" you are to the community, if you don't know what the hell you are doing its not gonna get fixed.

The only real solution I see to this problem, to make everyone happy, would be to instate another admin that can take care of the linkshell boards, and the minor issues, some one who also visits here often. But we still need reeves around to handle the hardcore maintenance issues.

And the numerous permissions errors he hasn't fixed yet? The ones that someone said are preventing Nox from doing anything as well? Those are pretty big, and honestly, who's to say if something goes horribly wrong, it will get fixed promptly?

And it doesn't matter how much you know what you're doing, if you aren't the least bit dedicated to the community, things won't get fixed either. This also operates under the assumption that nobody on this forum is capable of taking Reeve's place, nor is anyone competent enough to learn the skills or obtain the help necessary to take over that position. Not a particularly fair assumption in my opinion.

The bare minimum solution for this is another admin who will be on this site frequently, who actually has an interest in the wellbeing of QCDN, who has the same administrative rights as Reeve does. This is the minimum acceptable way to correct these problems. The main idea being that someone can fix all of QCDN's bugs, issues, problems, and give direction when needed. One last thing to remember. QCDN doesn't need to be going up in flames to need some routine maintenance.

Back to the car analogy, something is wrong with your car, the car still works, but some minor part or w/e isn't working right so you turn it in and ask them "This part isn't working, can you fix it?" and the mechanic replies "Does it really matter?" What would you think? I wouldn't go "Oh well your right it doesn't matter, bye" I'd still want it fixed. A mechanic telling me "Does it really matter?" comes of (to me at least) as a response of someone doesn't want to do what they are supposed to do.

Well shit, get learning bro and when you can run the forums you can be next in line for admin, until then deal with reeves.

Also from what i can tell, reeves was pretty active up until mid april, atleast he was dealing with the linkshell forums and taking care of other shit. That is also about when nox came around. So maybe reeves has had some shit hes had to deal with lately. And shit maybe he doesn't give a flying fuck anymore, I don't know. I still think you guys are being a bunch of whiny bitches though. I mean if its that big of a deal go buy your own webspace, start your own forums, and then you can only blame yourself for shit not being done right. :D

Back to the car analogy

Lol, i see where you coming from but a car and an internet forums are a little bit different, in that your car costs you money, and a mechanic would get paid for fixing your car, reeves doesn't get shit for fixing the forums and this is a free service to all of us. Again, i see what your saying, but i mean come on lol.

So because this is a free service, we deserve no support?
Someone can shrug the burden off, to ditch an entire community just for that?
And the people who donated?

The whole "well you do better" is a flawed and tired excuse to be honest. It overlooks the fact that someone has already decided to say they would do these things, and is nothing more than a glorified "NO U", ignoring the real issue. Reeve seems to be qualified for what he is doing, and accepted the role. Two reasons why I shouldn't have to attempt to do better.

Even in spite of that, I have been looking a little into things each night before bed, just in case something does go wrong. It'd be hellish if I dropped in the deep end right this minute, but still.

As much as you can say Reeve holds the current claim on the domain name and webspace, this site belongs to each and every one of us, the community.

tl;dr version: Accepting responsibility means just that, and is something Reeve did. Also, if things get desperate enough that it is required, I am willing to attempt to do my part.

As much as you can say Reeve holds the current claim on the domain name and webspace, this site belongs to each and every one of us, the community.
Bullshit. You use his site. He owns it. It's his. End of story.

If you don't like it, if you really have so much to bitch about, fork out the $160 and buy your own copy of VBulletin. Fork out another $50 (or less) per year and sign up for a year of dirt cheap hosting. Then pay up the couple dozen dollars for a few years of domain registration. It doesn't cost a lot aside from work to put up a forum. Get yours up, drag all the users you can get from this site to yours and make it a success.

And if you can't do that, you'll just have to deal with his lack of action. Coming from my own experience running several other websites over the years, one person's bitching on a forum is not enough to pull me away from more important and pressing tasks. And I bet it's the same in Reeve's case. So learn to deal with it. If it's such a huge issue, make your own. Gogo qcnn.

Again with the "you do it better" nonsense. There was a point in time when Sculli passed these boards off. He found Reeve through whatever channels, who agreed to own and maintain this site for the community.

Yes. He is renting the webspace. He owns the domain name. He might own the copy of vBulletin (or Sculli passed that along too, I'm not sure.) Take away Quetzalcoatl however, and what happens? Exactly. We do not own QCDN, but this site is for us exclusively. It always has been, and always should be.

I'd never even asked Reeve to be pulled away from "more important and pressing tasks". Here's the catch though. If you know you can't, get assistance from someone who can. And for how long, he's not done this. Don't forget the fact that starting a new community requires people to migrate from the old one, a ridiculous task to propose, and impossible unless QCDN does nothing short of shut down.

"You do it better" fails, because Reeve accepted the task, and any burden that lies with it.
I have no idea why he chose to do this, or how he was picked to do it, but this truly seems to be Sculli's greatest legacy.

Maybe Sculli just got tired of your bitching and decided a ffxi site wasn't worth the effort.

And maybe it's not possible to create something higher than a moderator but less than an administrator. I'm not sure. But if you know so much about how the admins should be doing their job, I'm sure they're just dying to hear from you.

The boards work. The boards aren't breaking. People are being disciplined in a timely manner. Moderators are doing a good job. The database is up and running. Users can post messages and change their avatars. People can post polls as part of their topics. All in all, this message board works better than most message boards. Let me repeat that for emphasis. All in all, qcdn works better than most private message boards. So stop your bitching already. What exactly is your issue? What is the world emergency? What do you think Reeve needs to get off his ass and fix immediately or else. Or else what? Exactly. Jesus H.

"You do it better" isn't nonsense. It's as much non-sense as "if you don't like it you can just get out." It's a fact of life. The door is over there.

Are you even helping pay for the forum every month?

At the drop of a hat, if Reeve felt so inclined, qcdn could become nothing more than his own personal storage server. Keep that in mind. He doesn't owe you shit.

Were you even here when that happened? If you were, you'd know.

Again, if you'd been paying attention, you'd know it's not only possible, but has been done in the past. Are you even aware of the situation currently?

Highlighted a single word for emphasis. The current moderation team has stabilized and is doing an excellent job. Lots of things can be attributed to them. The rest is all just set it and forget it, there's not usually a reason for it to NEED fixing.

When something DOES need doing, guess what? Months later, it's still not. Linkshell forums, Permissions errors, general tweaks, hell, look how long it took to get the clock fixed.

I dunno what part of "Reeve volunteered" you don't really understand. Nobody's forcing him to keep doing this, which is obvious really. If he's not going to, though, he needs to simply say so, drop the site, and let someone else pick up the ball for a change.

This is almost preferable. Almost.

Christ, some of you people. Maybe it's just because when I say something, I actually put forth an effort to keep my word. I guess that's too much to expect of others.

If shit hits the fan, Reeve has e-mail alerts set up to notify him that the domain is not responding. I have his cell number saved to my phone, and it's posted to the mod forum. He will know in a timely manner if critical issues come up, and I have faith - others might not - that he'll respond in an equally timely manner.

The small things like LS forum requests, it would be nice if some mods had that ability. I see and note your point Garvin about how he accepted the responsibility etc. This is - in theory - fact.

I'm happy with things in general. It'd be nice to occasionally get new things added to the board but not really essential. It's just when something new is added it should be maintained or removed. Having a board set up to request an ls forum that isn't maintained is just silly. If you can't have a 1 week tops turnaround on that forum, just take it down until you can. Some people use the site more casually and won't understand why their forum isn't being created. That shouldn't be a problem. Other things (like the news scrolling thing) aren't really as important but it still shows a bit of care to maintain them as well. I think really what bothers me is when something cool is added then forgotten about, which is where my suggestion of allowing someone else to maintain them would be great. Reeve and Nox can CREATE new things for us, get a mod or two to MAINTAIN them for us then everything's perfect.</bloboftext>
