Illegal Immigrants, support or against?

jobs are there, people are just unwilling, or unable(education, skills, qualifications) to take them. And especialy since many of the immigrants work undesireable jobs, and are paid less than minimum wage on aevrage. You think it'll be easy to find someone to clean your house at 3 dollars an hour? And if you had to pay 10$ an hour, would you even see the service as worth it?
Current american economy is adusted to 7 million people working low end jobs for low pay. It'll get turned on its end if the jobs suddenly dissapear, or low end wages suddenly double.
HAHAHHA THATS A BUNCH OF BS.
My mothers friend got a job here in her first month here on a VISA, cleaning a house in Greenwich, CT for $18 an hour working 7 hours. Thats better than what most Americans get, now stfu.

Shit, if i wasnt a guy i would probably take the job myself. Very good money

This became much longer than I had intended, but it is a very interesting discussion. I hope the length doesn't discourage you.

When corporations make products they look to cut costs as much as they can, and one major downside of this is the effect on the enviornment. Most companies will go to almost any end to cut costs, regardless of the cost on people and the environment. If it means dumping waste they dont care.
Hit that one in my ethics in the profession class. That is one of those situations where the government is needed for setting boundries. In this case, the government makes being environmentally friendly the more cost advantage option. They make it so that to pollute x tons of waste costs y amount of dollars in fees and fines. Suddenly, dumping is no longer the most cost effective option.

Another factor to consider is many companies can incorporate an eco friendly ad campaign to increase sales as an off set for higher environment expenses.
WHen dealing with hazardous materials that they cannot dispose of legally they simply dilute it into water until it reaches a legal limit that they can dump it
Except its not that simple. Not only do companies have a contaminate concentration limit in parts per million for example, but they also get volume limits. I learned way more than I wanted about this from a field trip to the local sewage treatment plant for Fayetville. Everything is carefully measured in that not only do that have to keep the concentration low, but they have to keep the volume down. However, dillution is a possible solution because it is accomplishing the goal of not realesing a toxin concentration so thick it shocks the environment.

So would it be fair to say that you believe that the some 45 million Americans who do not have health care coverage just don't consider it important enough?
Correct. They have their priorities, and they put healthcare somewhere on the list. On the top of the list are usually things like food, electricitiy, cell phones (sad, but true), shelter, etc. If healthcare is important enough to them they can get it or work more to get it. However, I see the real problem with healthcare as its current high expense brought on by the vast amount of insurance doctors need against malpractice and how expensive that insurance is, which is a direct result from frivolous and/or too large of lawsuit amounts. This expense gets passed on to the consumer. A study I saw a couple years back put our malpractice suits as averaging 10 times the amount in other modern countries. This has an additional effect of motivating potential doctors to other careers which decreases supply and causes the price level to rise.
When I say socialist economy, I am talking economy as currently practiced in Germany or Sweden. With that in mind, the above quote doesn't ring true.
Like evalos pointed out and I discovered after further research, there are no true socialist governemnts nor economies currently in effect in the globe. Those two for example are still heavily influenced by capitalist styles and don't meet the requirements of a socialist economy. Even the socialist websites I checked decry the heavy capitalist style found in all current European countries. So really, you are comapring a capitalist economy to a slightly crippledcapitalist/socialist economy (crippled slightly because of the socialist aspect ).
I believe that all people should earn their keep, but I am willing to accept that some don't, and I feel that if that number of loafers is small enough to be acceptable
Except the number of loafers will never remain small and acceptable. This is the very problem of group work and what happens the second you move away from individual motivation. To take a quote on Social Loafing: "social loafing is the phenomenon that persons make less effort to achieve a goal when they work in a group than when they work alone. This is one of the main reasons that groups sometimes perform less than the combined performance of their members working as individuals." In some of the studies I have seen on this the group effort of 4-5 people can result in less than the individual effort of any single member when motivated individually. Now apply that to an entire country, and you have a major reduction in output. This is best seen in the U.S.S.R.'s attempts at communism. There was no motivation.

We have much more in common with animals than we realize. What drives us everyday is the desire to survive. When survival is gurannted, you remove the most basic and instintual motivator from us. Look at teenagers for example. Some nievely float through school comfortable that their survival is secure as they live off their parents and their performance has little effect on whether they will survive. It's a huge temptation to simply slack, and many take it. Move that into the working world, and you have full on economic collapse.
Don't get me wrong, I like money as much as the next guy, but I believe that a modern society has an obligation to all its members, even the unproductive ones.
All, but the mentally handicapped have the ability to be productive. I can accept keeping them in asylums. Thus, beyond that there shouldn't be anyone not working. There are jobs for the blind, deaf, mute, disabled, etc. Not the best jobs, but jobs that earn their survival. Guranteed survival of all is anti-evolutionary and anti the ways of nature. Nature has always taught that the weak get picked from the herd and that makes the herd stronger and healthier. It sounds cruel and cold, and it is. I admit that before Answa points it out. However, it is a necessary evil for advancement and the long term benefits outweigh the costs in this instance. Funny you say you are after "the greater good of the nation" too, but we are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.

Interesting analogy for death penalty. Personally, I justify it by saying there are less killed innocently than are saved by the deterent. When I apply that to the choice between capitalist and socialist, it comes down to which I think will save more lives. I would then have to go with the capitalist for many the reasons I have stated already (check my logic post), but they would include more medical R&D, higher standard of living, healthier society if the weakest who can't provide for themselves are removed.
as long as the productive elements of society are sufficently rewarded, and do not feel that the loafers are a burden on them, things are fine.
Except, we already have elements in our capitalist society who do feel the loafers are a burden on them. This can be seen in the many complaints about welfare for example. That only becomes a bigger problem as more and more come to depend on the governments survival when you move farther from capitalism. Its an exponential effect. The more loafers there are, the more productive workers become disillusioned, the more they in turn loaf.
Likewise the workers in socialized systems are sufficiently compensated. Between salaries, lower hours per work week, significantly more annual leave, the ability to take vacations without to hold two jobs to pay for it, and enjoying a wide varierty of free or heavily subsidized services provided by the government, the socialized system worker does simply not feel shafted.
Except, they will have to work more hours than in a capitalist system because the capitalist system will be more efficient for previously stated reasons. You can't get more benefits and less work time with a less efficient system. As one increases, the other decreases. Easy way to view it is: Time worked = Overall Benefits. If the nation as a whole works less time, then the benefits will decrease, if they work more time, then their are more benefits to be passed out. However, they will be limited and always underperform a capitalist economy because they won't be as efficient.

That's not true. As long as we have illegals around, they work for less than minimum wage so why pay legals minimum wage and take out taxes on them? It's just easier to do the wrong thing than the right thing.

And especialy since many of the immigrants work undesireable jobs, and are paid less than minimum wage on aevrage. You think it'll be easy to find someone to clean your house at 3 dollars an hour? And if you had to pay 10$ an hour, would you even see the service as worth it?

Those jobs are not undesirable the pay is. If they were minimum wage jobs with tax deductions etc., like they should be, many Americans would do it. There are plenty of Americans working for minimum wage as is. It's just employers finding a way to make cheaper labor which, in this case, is wrong and illegal. Also, people should clean their own damn house and mow their own lawn. It's not a hard job... well to some of us it isn't.

No, it would compensate over time like most things do.

QFT.

People who use the "well they do the jobs other people won't" need to join this decade, we miss you. It's outmoded. Anyone who wants to claim dishwashing/construction/janitorial service/landscaping/etc are jobs other people wont do know exactly dick about being completely broke with a family to feed. For comparison i offer this:

Handling raw sewage is an undesirable job that i would assume there aren't many people clammering to do. Conversely let's look at the stereotypical jobs that illegals do that people who watch too much news are talking about here... dig a ditch, do construction/landscaping, cash a welfare check, etc. Handling raw sewage processing also pays better, usually pays benefits, and requires you to have a social sec # for things like insurance. Surely these perks do not make it a more sought after career option, it's dealing with other people's shit ... literally. Now ... i don't know about you folks but i'd rather make a decent living knee deep in shit that provides insurance for myself and my family than make absolutely nothing building houses for a guy who's only form of insurance is "You're fired before you hit the ground."

My conclusion? Apathy is the closest thing to stupidity you're going to find on this issue. Not being legal hurts the immigrant more than it helps save in the case of government aid such as welfare .. which i'm not going to even get started about as on a personal/local level the abuses of the system i see approach perversion.

Wanna immigrate?

Get here legal.
Get educated.
Get a job.
Live your productive life as an american citizen via the proper channels.
You'll be better off for it.

... or GTFO.

How anyone could make any kind of rationalisation that it's somehow ok to illegally enter a country, reject the society you've entered on multiple levels, be exploited and generally drain on the society you entered under the hope of a better life is absolutely absurd.

Were i to break in to your homes, disrespect you, take your shit, make you pay for my lunch, and then move on to your neighbor or bring my family in on the action you'd call the cops in a heartbeat and my ass would as locked down or far away as it could get from you .. the honest, hardworking, taxpaying citizen. How hard is it to grasp?

Perhaps we need to move away from the term "socialist economy", I am not advocating socialism. I am advocating socialized heathcare, childcare, and education, within a capitalist economy, that gives every citizen, regardless of their economic standing, free access to what I consider essential services.

No one should be turned away when they come to see the physical about a strep throat just because they can't pay for treatment.

A parent shouldn't have to be forced to drop out of the workforce to stay home and take care of the kid because it is cheaper to do so than to continue working and putting the child in day-care during working hours.

Everyone should have access to free higher education for their first major and as long as they meet high academic standards.

There is cost associated with that, cost that needs to be distributed among all citizens, regardless of whether they ever get sick, whether they have kids, or want to go to college.

A country is like a big MMO, and life is a group effort, very very very very few people can solo it. Considering that one needs other people, there is no reason to not give a little to make it a better place for everyone, including oneself.

Your tax dollars are paying for their children's education. Your tax dollars are paying for their welfare. Your tax dollars are paying for their medical. Do they pay taxes? No. Ok, so they do all the "dirty" work for us Americans. Does that make it right?

I don't think that's entirely accurate, surely it is to some extent but i think it's more the case of being arrested and beaten for showing your opinions in mass numbers to the government went out with the 60s. Lots of people feel strongly about it, but if you can't get off your ass to vote why would you go to a protest or take any other kind of action for that matter?

I should have used "Politician" instead of "Americans", my bad. Editing now...

American life is based on Lady Liberty opening her arms to the people of the world. No matter if they came here legally or illegally, as long as they make an effort to become a productive citizen, who are any of us to say who gets to stay and who gets the boot? Unless you are one of the unfortunate few who are Native American descent then at one point in time, then someone in your family was an immigrant. How about October is the projected date for the birth of the 300,000,000th American. Yet the population of the world is 6.5 million+. There is plenty of room here in these fine states for more people to come and start a life.

Oh, and Rones, you really make me laugh sometimes at how much you are still a tit sucking college boy. Ok for good health coverage in my area it's $475/month. Now tell me how someone working a job for $9-$10 with rent/morgage, utlilities, phone, car payment/insurance and food/hygene costs probably in the $1500/month range, and that is a low estimate, is supposed to afford health care? BTW that $475 doesn't even include dental, which is close to another $70-$80/month. Now I'll give you the credit that you did say they could work more to get it......seriously though, get real. Hell, the current state of health care prices is even having affects on corporations and unions dropping coverages down to minimums that employees have to fight/strike against to get back just some of the basic care that they enjoyed in the past. Just wait until you turn 24 or 25, what ever the age is to where you are no longer covered by your parents health care, then come back here and talk about getting an extra job to pay for health care.

you work roughly 40 hours a week for $10 an hour? That's not very good at all. That seems around the pay people that have part-time jobs (atleast people I know.. and the jobs I've had) have and the hours about they'd work in a week (during summer, not school). If they are full-time employees they should prolly be working for more money and prolly work longer in the week. Nothing against you, I'm sure people underpaid and such.. not everything is perfect in this world.. to be honest though.. if you live in a city (which.. with that cost of health coverage seems you are).. they shouldn't necesarily need a car as public transportation should be able to compensate. I know here where I live getting around via public transportation isn't too bad. Things might not be convenient time-wise all the time but it sure as hell will beat the cost that car payments will take :\

anyways.. that list shouldn't be too bad depending on where you live. If you aren't trying to live in a large stylish (overly priced) place (but not something run down) utilities + internet + phone + cable TV + food + rent is about.. hmm 800 dollars total? Something around there. It's not bad at all. Also, health coverage tends to come with full time jobs. Atleast, to my knowledge, most employers give their employees health coverage of sorts. I know that, for my father, his job gives him health coverage as well as any sons or daughters he might have if they are still a dependant under them (and such is my situation being in college x.x). But.. I don't know everything.. there prolly are jobs out there that don't give their employees health coverage. Anyways...I guess that's just how it is around here for me. I can't claim to know everything about everywhere so ya x.x if it's like that around where you live where one can't afford atleast Rent + Utilities + Health Care + Food each month than perhaps they could try and move. Cars aren't a necessity when it comes to most jobs people seem to get. They are just a convenience. Internet and TV aren't necessary either, just entertainment.

About your immigrant statement.. illegal shouldn't be tolerated in any aspect. If they are truly hardworking than they should have worked hard to enter the US. Illegal is still illegal. Laws are laws... why should someone who broke the law to enter the country be allowed to stay and free without consequences when those who steal, kill, abuse, or break any other law get punished? If you are so against the laws though why aren't you people out to change it? Maybe cause you don't really care enough?

The bolded is an oxymoron. You cannot come here illegally and be a citizen, it's not possible. The sentence previous to it is a nice notion, but you should move out of the 50s and join us here in 06 where this is a line of bullshit designed to score the immigrant vote.

Who are we to say who goes and who stays? The jackasses floating the bill. It's not as if you could come to me at the sizzler, sit at my table and proceed to eat my food without me kicking your ass. The same principle applies here, pay a piece of the check and eat all you want or GTFO.

Your statements are jaded and soft. It's because of people like you America sits in it's current identity crisis, we can't get anything at all done in this country, and the "american dream" has gone by the wayside to make room for the dreams of immigrants who can't be bothered to go through the proper channels, as easy as it is. Congratulations on your ability to lie down and take it.

We are to say because it is our country. By your same flawed logic, you have no right to kick people out who choose to squat in your home. Did you even read any of the previous posts that described the effects of full open door immigration policy? The US would go down the proverbiale toilet as every poor person in the world flooded here expecting streets paved with gold. After the US got used up, they would all run to the next successful country.

This isn't the flameboard. You admit defeat and your own inabilities when you must attack the person instead of the idea.

I realize its a foreign concepts to many Americans today, but why not try not living beyond your means! I do not understand people who think living expenses have to be $1,500 a month. I have a friend who lives in a small aparment, works part time earning $8per hour, and goes to college full time. Her monthly living expenses are $200 rent, $150 for food, and around $200 for utilities, cell phone, internet, cable. She is poor, but she lives comfortably and puts the rest of her money towards college. Her health insurance is covered by her parents job atm, but when she graduates she can easily apply the money she is spending on classes to her own health insurance and have some left over. It is very possible if people don't try to live so far beyond their means and learn how to properly invest and manage their funds.

I also appreciate you totally ignoring my point of the source of healthcare cost problems. That problem I stated before is what makes it difficult to afford healthcare, but there is a nice alternative. Take that $475 per month, and invest it. Never touch, it just invest everytime. After just four years, you will have not only invested $22,800, but will have earned interest depending on how you invested it. Most healthy, young people do not need health insurance. I've gone 10 years with only 2 hospital visits, both for a broken arm. However, this requires people to show some self control, which is impossible for some. Insurance companies make money because people pay them more than they pay out in benefits. One of my professors worked for a health insurance company whose policy was to reject all claims the first time. So few people would reattempt and follow up on the claims, they made large profits off that. Its a giant scam.
Sculli said:

I don't think that socialized is the word you are wanting. Socialism is a "system in which the economic means of production are owned and controlled collectively by the people." Your idea is left and a democratic party view, but it's not socialism.

My biggest problem with government healthcare is it is inefficient. Canada for example (I know I'll get bashed for this) has to charge huge amounts in taxes to cover its healthcare costs. Well more than they would if it was done through a capitalist system. The reason the cost is so high for the US and Canada though is a result of our legal systems.

Mal practice suits sky rocket the cost of medical. Its all a dirty scam that is allowed because of the way our courts willingly hand out such large pay outs. Insurance companies for doctors charge more, cost gets passed to the individual health insurance companies, who pass the cost to the customer or government. The source of it all though is the legal system. Restrict that, doctor's insurance would drop, price for medical treatment decreases, saving passed to consumers.
A parent shouldn't have to be forced to drop out of the workforce to stay home and take care of the kid because it is cheaper to do so than to continue working and putting the child in day-care during working hours.
Someone will have to pay for child care regardless. Is it fair to make everyone pay for those who choose to have more kids than they can afford to take of? Costs of children act as a good deterent too people living beyond their means and having too many children. If the day care costs more than the person earns working, then it is more efficient for society over all if that parent stayed home and took care of the child. However, I didn't think day cares cost quite that much. Even then, its only for a few years until the kid reaches elementery school (aka: free day care).
Everyone should have access to free higher education for their first major and as long as they meet high academic standards.
Sounds nice, but wouldn't work well in a capitalist situation. Net cost for society as a whole would be higher. Colleges and book companies could use the opportunity to price gouge the government unless the government took over the colleges personally like our public education system. I don't think that would be a very good result either. I also don't feel right making non-college workers pay for my education.
There is cost associated with that, cost that needs to be distributed among all citizens, regardless of whether they ever get sick, whether they have kids, or want to go to college.
How is that fair though? People should pay for their own benefits and earn what they want in life. Making everyone else pay for it is unfair and would disillusion people. It would cause the group loughing I have described time and again. As soon as people see they are carrying the load for others or others are carrying their load, the lough. Efficiency drops and motivation is lost. People are only well motivated when it is their neck on the line and they see a direct correlation and causality between their work and their rewards. Humans are social animals, but our survival instincts force us to look out for number one.

From an evolutionary psychology view, social loafing has pretty clear source. Let's say you are living in a small primitive community that pools its food and resources. Now instead of working to provide for the community, you take it easy and live off the work of others. This makes you more likely to live and pass on your genes. For example, less likely to get killed out hunting, more time to make babies. Those who worked just for the good of the community got exploited and did not survival as well as those who just looked for number one. End result: our current instinct that causes social loafing because it increases our likely hood of passing on our genes. This is why it is critical that people don't depend on each other for survival. It causes leeching and removes the motivation to work as hard as you can and contribute to society.
A country is like a big MMO, and life is a group effort, very very very very few people can solo it.
Imagine an mmo where your experience earned was linked with the experience everyone else in the whole world got. Every kill got split among everyone, even those sitting around in town. Would anyone ever bother to go out and exp? What if every dynamsis run and npc purchase cost got split among everyone on the server? Would you be motivated to earn money just so others could spend it and get the rewards? That is what ffxi would be like if it mimiced your desired real world.

You've obviously never been hit by an uninsured motorist.

Personally i like that TN forces at least liability and UM, saves me a hell of a headache on the offchance.

Actually its very good that some states require car insurance, if you get in an accident and it the other dudes fault (IE your rear ended) and they dont have insurance, then its your insurance and premiums that eat it. You could sue the person sure, but chances are they wont have the money anyhow. I used to live in flagstaff AZ near the Navajo Reservation. On the Reservation they didnt have to have insurance and many, many of my friends and family got screwed over in accidents with people from the reservation getting in accidents.

Anyhow, I hold to the fact immigration should not be open door. If you are here illegally you should be punished. Much like if you do illegal drugs, speed down the street, steal, kill whatever, when you do something that is against the law, you should be punished. I hope the law doesnt change to allow illegals residency over people who have been going through the process leagally for years. They are not the backbone of our society, they just have given comapnies a better excuse to screw the rest of us over.

and if either of you did what Rones suggested above.. say... put the money you'd put into car insurence into an investiment which provided interest.. the time you DO get into an accident you'd be able to use that. You act like car insurence saves you money.. it does NO such thing. It takes more money from you than it needs to. People just need some damn self control and start saving their own money instead of buying the newest shiny object on the market.

And if you are hit by an uninsured motorist.. the courts will tend to force them to pay... if they can't pay then things will be taken care of another way usually by the courts.

Say i get hit by a guy ... not just hit ... fucking-A totalled, hospitol for 6 months (6 days costs 10-20k down here... for a bowel obstruction, let alone being bashed all to hell from a car wreck.), partial paralysis, therapy, let alone a new car... you're talking somewhere in the range of 1-400k (generous estimate but still pretty damn close) depending on what your circumstances are. You think the money i save paying as little as i do for compelte and full coverage is going to fund my medical care and the care of everyone involved be it my passengers or an accident that is found to be my fault? Let alone a new car and lost revenue..... I call bullshit. Surely, every day i don't have this happen is a day i've wasted some money but it's a neccessary evil to a point, and quite honestly from the perspective of someone who's been in a car accident that effected their entire lives (parapalegic, nervous disorders, etc) it's a sound investment.

But we shouldn't derail to this unless someone feels strongly enough to champion a thread for it, really.
