Illegal Immigrants, support or against?

Why wouldn't they teach about them all? They're all represented in our society, no matter how small.

And foreign language classes - especially Spanish - have been requirements for graduation in most places for the last couple decades. That's nothing new.

Yes... New York sucks...

And I don't want preferential.. if they wanna have Muslim holidays shown too fine! But don't say I can't say Merry Christmas to someone.

Look at Detroit..... they have that ungodly sounding prayer thing over loudspeakers for the muslims. How's that for "preferential"?

I still have no idea why they force people to learn about this, the culture perhaps but the language? Ridiculous.

Also, I am speaking of CHILDREN under 13, forced to learn SPANISH and have some classes (like math or history or science) in ALL SPANISH.

Um.. fuck that? I don't live in Mexico, I don't live in Spain, I don't live in South America.. I live in the US, we speak English. I should not be forced to learn some language I detest (the sound not the people) to understand people coming to the country I live and pay taxes in tyvm. You come here you learn our language, simple as that.

Because an educated population living in a world with a global economy is better than an ignorant population set to whither into obscurity. You change with the times or you get left behind.

The only people i saw raising a fuss over this in december were the holy rollers and politicians worrying about re-election.

I can't comment to the detroit bit as there are no specifications as to where or when this takes/took place, wether or not it was government facilitated, and wether or not there was a captive audience present.

Either way it's entirely irrelevent considering all the christian broadcasts found in the media these days, let alone the subversive undertones of numerous outlets regarding a biased opinion on religion in the public eye.

Edit: in response to Neyla; more people speak english than spanish in our "world economy", making your argument moot. If anything america has made a bad habit out of taking in the poor and ignorant and throwing money at them instead of turning around and making productive citizens out of them by at least teaching them the language of the land and stigmatizing those who refuse.

In short: we're in the middle of an identity crisis that no one wants to fess up to. Everyone's so worried about being a _insert religious/sexual/cultural orientation here_ American. No one's real sure what is or isn't identifiable with just being a plain old american. Everyone wants some kind of concession or double standard to work for them and it ammounts to nothing but bullshit and ignorant bickering over absolutely nothing but a distraction from what the actual problems with the country are. It's called deflection, it's the best tool a politician has in their respective arsenal.

Knowledge is power, as beaten of a phrase as that is. The more the merrier. Americans are already the least educated of the top industrial nations, anything to fix that is a good thing in my book. Language skills broaden the intellectual horizon.

Re: Spanish
In 2005 the U.S. has seen more hispanic births than caucasian ones.
What more of a reason do you need? A huge number of Americans has Spanish as their first language. I am sure that you won't see a school in Fairbanks, Alaska, requiring their students to listen to history in Spanish, now in El Paso, Texas, that may be different.

One day a sissy, like many of you, will be in office and illegal border crossing will be lifted, so to speak, and the U.S. will be battered in disease, economic struggle, and all that comes with mass herding. One day a sissy, like many of you, will be in office and people will do some pretty awful things to our country. Maybe begin a war here or keep picking with terrorist tactics, I know you like that one... it makes you cry more than a baby when momma takes her tit off, and nothing will be done. America will be destroyed and all it stood for gone. I'm just waiting patiently and practicing my shot... for one day I'll be a sissy hunter.

Yes I did, I skimmed and thought it was a sarcastic comment, I didn't read it fully, I apologize.
I won't learn Spanish, I live in an English speaking country (currently...) and that's the only language I will speak in it. The fact I know enough french to get by, or that I will gladly learn another language is not the same as "YOU MUST"
Where are the people talking of freedoms being stomped on for that? Oh wait... the only time the media whines is when it attacks bush or whites or christianity :/

And Sculli, I agree. I love foreign language, but please notice the word "foreign". I will not be forced to learn ssome other language because the immigrants are too lazy too. (lol lazy immigrant, who'd EVER think that..) I know enough people who moved over here at 20+ 30+ even 40+ years old.... and guess what? They may not be PERFECT but they learned our language. That's not much to ask.

They don't just require Spanish. I live in West Virginia and just as many kids were learning Japanese and German as Spanish.

You're a bit "crude" so people are gonna bitch about that but...... you're right.

I would put money that if Kerry would have won, we'd have gotten hit with terror attacks that put any previous to shame.... but he didn't so meh.... Next president is fucked. 90% likely it will be some sissy spineless left wing twat who will bend over for EVERYONE to be happy... and watch the bombs fall.
It will be an....... interesting experience.

As for the call to prayer, i can guarentee you that it comes from privately owned land. And mokk is right. The worst people on air these days are hypocrites like rush 'jail the drug users' limbaugh who preach nothing but hate.

Now .. while i agree with the fact that knowing multiple languages is intrensically a good thing i think the motivations for this are quite possibly the most stupid i've ever heard.

I fail to see how a growing population of people who have every opportunity to learn to speak the language most commonly used in any area requires that area to change it's linguisitics to suit the influx on an immigratory or otherwise status.

Why not teach spanish kid's english as a secondary language, and i say secondary only because obviously a number of spanish speaking households are content to stare stupidly across the counter at me trying in vain to communicate that they want cigarettes and lotto tickets in spanish.

an rise in spanish speaking births should not be the precursor to compulsory language classes in a country that primarily speaks english. On an entirely seperate note: while speaking spanish may get you a higher paying job in some locations i garuntee that the numbers speak to themselves about english skills and employment availability in this country. I daresay i could find a job faster speaking english than throwing it out there that i know spanish as well.

At least you went back to the original topic even though it has nothing to do what's been discussed the last couple pages. Hunt sissys all you want, I don't give a shit. I'm on the side that they should be kicked out.

I hate PC+1... seriously but I gotta respond to this before I go....

I was offered Spanish, French, German, or Italian.
My mother is Italian... we don't get along... and I've heard her screaming at me in Italian enough to know I don't have a passion for the language ;p
German? I don't like Gaelic language, too coarse.
Spanish? I hate the language, period. It's sound is WAY too common here in the city and it makes my teeth grind.
French? Government sucks... but I love the language and a bit of the culture... Nothing is sexier than a woman's French accent.. plus it flows, it's a beautiful language.
So I took French.

I am saying a school (if not many) are -forcing- children to learn Spanish fluently. I think this is wrong.

Learning a foreign language is about a lot more than simple communication. Anyone can learn how to ask for directions to the bathroom, but depending on how good your teacher is, you can learn a lot about how your own language is structured gain insights about culture and lots of other great things wrapped up in that whole "education" thing.

To bring this back around to immigration (and I apologize for helping the thread derailment), learning English is an expected part of our assimilation process. The "melting pot" isn't just about reshaping immigrants, but also about reshaping the natives as well. Learning a foreign language is good for our kids; sorry you don't see that.

Schooling is mandatory, school boards, which are elected officials, decide what's on the program. That's where the "you must" comes in.

The people in that state, country, city, whatever decided to make Spanish mandatory.

I don't think it's so much not seeing it as not being entirely comfortable with
A.) Which language(s) seem to be getting singled out.
B.) Why said language(s) are being singled out.
C.) The motivations behind pushing for said education on the hotbutton language of the hour.

Why not be all inclusive like the post-office? aside from the lack of resources to offer all that educational content..

If it was honestly an educational movement that'd be one thing but it seems to me alot of the policies are being adjusted due to massive spanish immigration both legal and illegal and an unwillingness to adapt to the society in which they chose to make residence.

Now .. around here it's a different story on the local level as i live in the south ... either you speak english or go fuck off in a corner somewhere. Folks around here know enough about the outside world to pass them through HS and get pissed off about the news.

As with any other school topic, you'll keep the knowledge that's useful to you and eventually lose the rest. These poor innocent babies being forced forced forced to learn Spanish before they can graduate will get their revenge by never using it again.

And of course some of us on this board could stand a few English lessons.
