Lv70 SMN

Well Healing Staff raped light staff into the ground...but apart from that i think you are right about it being the best main weapon for cure spells.

Healing Staff is indeed better than the Light Staff. It gives +50 MP. It's very impressive, yes. However, it's 3,000,000 gil, and 50 MP is kind of useless without the aid of the Dark Staff to give it to you anyway. You can only use Dark OR Healing Staff. Without Dark Staff, the Healing Staff's 50 MP just takes that much longer to gain anyway.

That's like saying Cure Clogs and Strider Boots are worth their sick amount of money. Your character runs at like 5 mph (Elvaan and Galka jog). Strider boots give you like 12% running speed. In total, is around 5.6 mph. It's a nice extra boost to speed, but you'd be better off with Leaping or Winged Boots or something. Cure Clogs decrease "Cure" cast time by 15%. You might think "hey, that's awesome". It is pretty good. But looking at how quick the Cures cast anyway, Cure 1 loses 0.3 seconds to it. Cure 5 loses 0.375 seconds. In my opinion, losing just over a 1/3'rd of a second off of Cure V isn't worth 900-1,000k gil.

it might not be good alone, but its like NIN paying 7mil for haste+3%. You stack -cure cast time and couple that with capped merits and your cures will go off at a very noticible difference.

And on the healing staff darkstaff arguement? what the hell are u talking about. I cure with HS, rest with DS, and swap as u need. Your refresh will pick up your 50MP really fast, especially with Nobles/dalmatica + refresh + ballad + /smn you have 8MP tick refresh -_-

You know... you can macro in your Dark Staff for when you rest and Healing Staff/Light Staff for when you'e curing. Doesn't Dark Staff lower rhe potency of cure or something? Or it lessens the chance of white magic enfeebles landing? Anyway, you should have both Dark Staff and Light Staff/Healing Staff.

I have both of those macros. I'm saying that when you're resting MP, you're not going to be getting the +50 MP with the Dark Staff from the Healing Staff. When you change it, your MP's gonna still be the same, regardless of equipping or unequipping your Healing Staff.
And Evo, I don't have a lot of gil. Sorry for not having Refresh spell on my WHM/BLM, and not subbing SMN for the Auto-Refresh (1 mp/t). I don't level up much anyway, so RDM Refresh or BRD Ballad isn't going to happen. I'm just saying that I can't play God and have both the Healing Staff's +50 MP and the Dark Staff's HMP at the same time.

and i wouldnt expect any1 leveling their first job as whm to have cure clogs or a healing staff. as long as they have erase and are good at the whm job, you dont need those things to be successful

Thank you. This kind of goes along with the whole SMN thing too. It all depends how well you play, not what you have. However, any Mage without Dark Staff by Lv52 minimum deserves to be deleted. (Kinda off topic, but whatev)

This thread makes me giggle.

Personally when I solo I use WHM/WAR or WHM/THF. I don't really like DRG too much. SAM is better. I'm not complaining about cookie-cutter tactics, I just hate when people tell me I'm doing my job wrong because I'm not using them. Well I use WHM/BLM in parties for Warp only pretty much. I was using /SMN for awhile there till I out leveled that sub and I don't know what is better really. With one you have an insane amount of MP, but with the other you have the conserve MP trait. Now I never did any research on what is better but it always seemed to me that at the end of a battle I would have more MP with /BLM than with /SMN. With /SMN you get it back faster but I don't know, I'll have to level my SMN up if I ever wanted to parse it. Of course I also Flash the mobs too. Some people really flip out about that one, yet they say nothing when I cast Blind? On to the light staff issue. With my Light Staff equipped my cure IIs do like 105-110, without it they do 100. Now too me that isn't really that much of a difference to get all excited about and I deffinatly feel it was not worth to 150k or so that I payed for the thing. I'm not sure but I thought that it was agreed that MND isn't even really that important for a WHM to have and MP was the #1 factor. It's on these boards somewhere I think. Plus with my club I get to use my cool ass sheild. Along with the Holy Breastplate that is the coolest looking armor in the game.

Just so it's clear.... BLM is subbed for Conserve MP over any of it's spells, when subbed by a WHM. Escape is nice, but that is for the BLM or RDM/BLM to cast. The same can be said for sleep, only then you add a BRD and DRK to the mix of people as well.

From the numbers I've seen, but don't care to dig up right now, WHM are more likely to benefit from Conserve MP than they are from /SMN Auto-Refresh. Not to say it doesn't have it's merits, but most parties move so quickly that far more MP is saved than auto-refresh grants over the same period of time. Of course /SMN is useful for many other situations and offers increased MP pool as well, but that may not even last as long casting every spell for full cost.

It is important to understand why you are using a particular subjob over another in each situation (rather than just grabbing BLM for warp or SMN for auto-refresh without understanding the impact of each).

Just a note to Shaunessy: I don't think comparing the difference that a light staff makes when casting Cure II means anything to anyone who has leveled a job to levels that can use one. Thats like a BLM comparing the bonus of an Ice Staff to any of his tier 1 nukes, when the difference should be measured on spells he would actually being using at his level. The frequency at which you would be casting cure II in a PT is most likely very low, especially considering that by the level you could be using a light staff you would have regen 2 along with both cure 3 and 4. Not to say your opinion of the staff isn't valid, but I felt the example you gave was very misleading to anyone else who might not be aware of the function of the staff.

Cure II is my main cast spell at 53. In fact I never once casted Cure IV in a fight. I don't even have it macroed yet. It's not really needed at my level. I do understand the reason I use /BLM over /SMN. Warp and I seem to have more MP at the end of a fight. If I felt differently then my SMN would be 32 or higher and my BLM would be 20.

Cure III is more common for your level, but hey, if you can work it at that level, so be it. I'll just assume you are using regen II to pick up the slack, either that or your tanks are some of the most talented to grace the server, which is doubtfull considering that they would be lacking a mojority of their AF and any equipment that would be replacing pieces of their AF at that point. You will notice that both cure III and Cure IV have much more noticable effects when accompanied by your light staff. That will make you glad you spent the money on it. ^^

u do realize that cure2 is much worst HP healed = MP used ratio than cure 3 right? I think if u switched u would find yourself with more MP to work with through the course of an xp chain.

Everyone has their dream list of items they would want to have before they lvl a certain job. But not everyone can get ahold of the items. But ill be damned before i let then hold me back from enjoying this game, and ill lvl the job i want to lvl when i want to lvl it. Its sad to see so many people think that gear makes the player, when i seen alot of players who lack the godly gear play damn well. Id much rather have a normal player then some jackass with a bunch of high gear who comes to the party thinking he is gods gift to this game.

Yeah, Cure II only gives you 110 if you normally cure 100 with Light Staff. But if you think about it, if you use Cure IV, which normally cures like 400, you can get 440. In turn, 40 free HP for a cure. I've never had to actually use Cure V yet, so I don't know how much it cures max for me yet, but that's just extra help. And if you have the Light Staff, the higher level the cure you use, the more MP you actually conserve, because you're using generally the same MP, but you're getting more HP out of it. And when you said WHM/WAR and WHM/THF I sure hope you don't use that in xp parties. However, I do agree with WHM/BLM being one of the better subjobs. WHM/SMN is awesome, too, but I like Warp, Escape, Aspir, Drain, etc.

Since you really don't need to use avatars in pt's, and since fenrir is usless until the all stat + move and the accu and evasion up move (I forget names>.>) That smn is doing fine. Most smn like myself main heal (only way for a smn to get pt's these days) and buff only when we can spare the mp, which happens a lot with a nin tank and at higher levels when we just end up having so much mp left over.

Btw, the stuff on your wishlist? You wouldn't be gimp without them. Without them you'd be a normal summoner, with them you'd be an elitist summoner. (nothing wrong with that. We all want to be elite, I want to be elite;-; ) When you wear gear that is sad even for a poor man for your class, you are gimp. I've seen too many rdm without AF at 67+. That is gimp, since AF is one of the best things we can wear. (namly el hat). Being a warrior without huaberk is normal. Being a warrior who thinks he's garbage without a huabergon or huaberk is being elitist.

Im currently a lvl 68 SMN who, sadly, still doesnt have his carby mits -.-. My last three attempts have ended in my losing of my offering. I have Full AF, the Austere Hat and Body, and all elemental staves (+ a Plutos) but iv had the worst luck in my attempts at trying to get Fenrir and Carby gloves >< Iv decided to wait till lvl 70 to get fenri so im actually a real asset to my party~ and im hoping a carby glove run will show up here, on QCDN, soon. I REALLY want free carby ~.~

btw, nicely said fire and sabs :P I would of posted my opinions but I get tired of being called a smn hater.

Yeah i never said that healing staff isn't expensive. I just said it's better than light staff (which it is).

And its not that hard to heal the 50 MP without the dark staff.

Like I said before, I feel I've played with some of the best tanks on the server. I wish I could remember their names but I can't, their weird JP names. Some of them weren't even really tanks per say. One party I was in was a MNK/WAR and a SAM/WAR bouncing hate back and forth on ants in the caves at level 51, and we all leveled that day. I can't see Cure III being the main cast spell though at 53, and Cure IV even needed, unless your WHM is asleep at the wheel. With a NIN all you'll do is rip hate by curing so much at one time, and with a PLD he should Cure III himself before you do. Maybe soon though I get to slide my cure macros down and drop II and add IV.
