but I wouldn't expect a country or a town or even state to discriminate against me because I didn't speak their language, that is Fascist
If not speaking their national language put their citizens at risk why wouldn't you expect it?
And it's not so much discrimination, there are immigrants who learn the language, you can't work in a warehouse if you can't understand the instructions given by your superior. It's a health and safety issue. This discussion is about handing people their licenses who can't understand the language... still a health and safety issue but for all of us. No committee is going to step in and put a stop to 'hiring' inadequate associates.
And like someone mentioned earlier, it's as simple as saying 'if you'd like to drive a 3000+lb metal killing machine on our roads then here are the qualifications you will need in order to get a passing grade..1, complete this test in English." That gives them the option. They can take public transit, car pool with co-workers or educate themselves well enough to get a pass.
If they cannot read english well enough to understand the questions asked in a multiple choice (stupid easy) test, then how are they supposed to understand written signs?
Airou, I totally get what you're saying, and I believe you 150% when you say your father is a great driver, and obviously well enough to have held positions as a driver. Most companies require an abstract before they even consider you. And I do understand that english can be very difficult and confusing for a foreigner to learn as it's one of the most complex and contradicting languages out there. But if he can understand some written, then it would just be a matter of him asking for assistance in the meaning (this is an example) of a question if that's what has him stumped. Any tests, especially multiple choice, can leave the most brilliant of people scratching their heads. And often times it's as simple as vague terminology.
No he's right, in England they have the mindset "In England we speak English if you don't like it, pip pip and GTFO"
And there are several countries where the majority feel that way. I know I do.
Not so much that they can GTFO, but I find it highly insulting when immigrants come here and start demanding changes to allow for exemptions because they're 'different'. Religion especially.
