Man bursts into flames after Taser shock

While it's unfortunate he died... he had his chance to act reasonable.

"Airport security called the Mounties for assistance after an unidentified man began pounding on windows and throwing chairs and computer equipment in the customs area shortly after arriving on an international flight at 1:30 a.m., Richmond RCMP Sgt. Pierre Lemaitre told CBC News.

"We arrived and tried to calm the man," Lemaitre said. "We tried through gestures to get him to put his hands down on the desk … to no avail."

When he ignored orders to calm down, police used a stun gun on the man. "

Should the officers have to take a monitor to the face, or a chair to the head to defend themselves or others? Why is it people only care about the 'victims'? They gave him a chance to be reasonable, when he wouldn't they took action. It's too bad he died but if you don't want to take the chance with being tasered, don't act out and be unreasonable.

That was a couple years ago, it has since been found that it was premeditated and the police officers are under scrutiny from their own department. So no, the man did not deserve to be tasered numerous times.

"The documents that have just come to our attention include a critical e-mail from very high up in the RCMP chain of command, disclosing that the officers decided in a premeditated way, 'enroute' to the scene, to use the Taser if Mr. Dziekanski did not comply."

They tasered him 5 times.

Im sorry but crazy fucks who pour gasoline on themselves and are crazy enough to charge at officers and throw rocks at them are the reason Law Enforcement use tazers.

You could argue that the cop shouldve shot him instead, but if a guy is charging at me with gasoline and a lighter, he can be a human bomb and take us all out. Not to mention i assume the officers were around their vehicles. Hes lucky he wasnt shot imo.

Wait it was premeditated? How so? They premeditated an attack on this man, and it was just a happy accident that he had a temper tantrum and started throwing chairs and computer equipment?

I've already added the quote if you care to go back and read it, or the whole story for that matter.

Psh, if I was on the way to someone who was throwing chairs and computer equipment, I'd decide I would tazer his ass too if he decides to resist me. Flat out, guy was stupid he caused them to use force, and they did. Too bad he died, but he brought it upon himself.

Topic is tasering. It's hardly off topic.

And the fact that police tasered the man *who was visiting his mother from Poland - he couldn't speak English* 5 times... is not acceptable. He was tasered 24 seconds after being confronted by the police.

I'll say it again;

On June 20, 2009, the proceedings were suspended until September, after it was discovered that an e-mail contained information indicating that the RCMP officers had already determined that they would use tasers even before encountering Dziekanski. This contradicts the officers' testimony that they only decided upon the use of tasers at the last minute

That is not fucking ok. Not in the slightest.

The RCMP officers involved in the Dziekański death have been widely criticized for their handling of the incident. A retired Vancouver Police superintendent commented after viewing the video that Dziekański did not appear to be making "any threatening gestures" towards the police and he did not see why it became a police incident. Particularly contentious is that the RCMP officers made no attempt to defuse or gain control of the situation before resorting to the Taser.

Rubber bullets, particularly fired at close range, at considerably more dangerous than a taser shock. Striking soft areas of the body, particularly ones not covered in clothing, can result in penetration of the flesh and serious, potentially fatal, injury.

Subduing a suspect with direct physical force is also extremely dangerous, both to the suspect and the officer.

I realize, the taser looks nasty, and painful. It most assuredly is both of these. But the level of stress placed on the body is no worse than, say, having a 200lb officer tackle you to the ground, place you in a submission hold while other officers attempt to control your legs, while yet another officer attempts to handcuff you.

Some officers overuse their tasers, no doubt. They're terribly convenient. But in this instance, I can't find fault with the officers in question. The suspect is carrying a highly flammable liquid, and a lighter. He's armed with a deadly weapon. Now, had they known he was quite as saturated as he was, I'm sure that someone might have realized that tasering him could have secondary effects, but to be brutally honest, better that one man get set on fire by himself, than take several officers with him.

They tasered him 5 times.

Of course, cops should always just go in and wing it, who needs to decide what to do ahead of time, that's just crazy talk.

My bad, thought the thread as about a man bursting into flames after being tasered, not about how many times cops tasering people has been "Unacceptable"

Obviously you aren't actually reading everything. They tasered him after 24 seconds. In my opinion, making up your mind on what you're going to do without assessing the situation is what was "crazy".

And this has pretty much been about whether or not tasering was acceptable since the first page.

In some instances maybe, but not all.

1.) I agree with kairi - the bad seeds need to be weeded out. Tasers don't kill people, overzealous assholes do.

2.) Hey thanks GBB - I didn't know I couldn't read. I'm still against tasers though. I hold an opinion similar to Halifirien's there - it's too easy to say "the taser is safe, it won't kill them", but if they (the cops) were using their heads while holding their pieces, maybe they wouldn't be so fast to draw.

Hell, I'd be more afraid of a drawn gun than I would of a taser. The business end of a gun simply means "game over" as opposed to "pause".

lol the guy doused himself in fucking gasoline and people on here are all like "oh tasers are dangerous" and "body physiology and electricty". what a crock of shit. only in america could this story be turned on the taser and not the complete retard, who probably should have died due to darwin's law, who covered himself in gas and kamikaze rushed a cop

I don't get it, how was it a shock that he burst in to flame when he got tased? The guy was drowsed in gasoline.

It was the taser that shocked him.

Ummm I think he ment, "Why was anyone surprised he lit fire, he was dowsed in gasoline." Or something to that effect, I don't think it was an actual question.
