Metal Gear Solid 4 - Official Thread

Yhatzee's review was half-expected, but he made a few points I disagree with. It must also be viewed in the light that he's playing it from the perspective of the general gamer.

First, cinematics: Yes, they're long. But they were a) needed to finish off the series and b) greatly wanted by fans, because they (and myself) really really like the story of Metal Gear, and want as much of it as we can cram into our brains. Yes, on average they're a little long (Especially with the mission briefings, but they can be viewed at any time, plus have an interactive component to them)

Now, what I wasn't expecting was his critique of the gameplay, which to me was superb. I think the only way you can find a problem with the controls is if you treat the game like a shooter, which it is very much not. Sure, on the easy modes you can just blast your way through the levels in a fashion which would make Master Chief of Nathan Hale proud, but if you're playing it that way you're, to quote the internet, doing it wrong. After playing on BBE, I can safely say that the controls are indeed perfect, and that you do in fact use every single stealth ability in his toolbox, and wish you had more.

Also, the story itself was epic, and everyone who doesn't think so can go suck a lemon.

I'm still surprised he didn't talk about the BB Unit.. I'm sorry.. they were really cool and all but they felt tacked on :\ Other than their intro and the fights themselves, they were barely mentioned and barely relevant to the stories. At least in other MGS games the bosses were mentioned earlier, more frequently, and more important in the story.

well honestly you have to consider what the BB unit truly where, mercenaries

they where just hired guns enticed to kill snake by the thought of their own personal freedom, yea it was kinda cheesy that drebin gave snake their life history after you beat them, but thats what you come to expect from metal gear bosses (at least i did) you beat them then they tell you why they did what they did and they where at peace

i dont find anything wrong with the BB unit, personally i think they are the best bosses of all 4 games

Octapus was a bitch, Raven was annoying, Wolf scared me, and Mantis was fucking awesome.

And since I can't watch the new Yahtzee video I have no idea what he said but I already expect what he'll say just from watching his other videos.

Also, anyone know a good/easy way to get past act 2 zone 1 on 6 tranq bullets? <_< Before I became ill I couldn't for the life of me get past that fucking zone. That damn hill screwed me everytime.

I mean the BB Unit was barely mentioned outside of their boss fights. Even the other games had a bit more importance to the story with their bosses :P I dunno.. I really liked the BB Unit but I didn't like that they felt really far more tacked on than any importance overall in the game. Everything else people have a problem with, I don't. Cutscenes, Product Placement, whatever... never bothered me.

I thought lolSonyEriccsson etc until Triumph. Triumph ftw!

just beat the game today. I was a little slow to get used to for me, mainly cause i never played MGS3. But i still liked it once i got the hang of it.

Bosses were annoyingly great. i fuckin hated raven cause by the time i found where she was hovering she already fired. Octo was rather easy for me, gotta love the snake eye. Mantis had me crackin up laughing once i got my hand on that doll. as for wolf, i made the truck my friend but actually took her out with a javelin missile. she was standing out in the field and had about 1/3 of her life left. i got lucky and crept up behind her and thought to go out with a bang. :P

Spoiler:
Now to irritate Limecat, i would like to express my joy of Raiden's role in the game. I'm happy he was the one that finished Vamp off for good and that he got back together with his woman. But how in the hell is ne not afraid of knives after all the times he got stabbed in that game, lol. the frogs even stabbed him "immortals" style at the end. his intro was badass too.

i'll probably be playing through it again after all.

I wanna know how the hell Raiden's body is back to normal >.>

Completed it tonight (only got it on Tues)

Got to say that's the best game i've ever played. Absolutely loved every second of it. Shame the items it said I unlocked and would get when I met with Mk II I never got >.>

I imagine his body at the end of the game is totally reconstructed and probably not even real tissue. There is that crease that goes all the way around his body, which at first I thought was a scar, but as I watch it again, it looks like they made that body for him.

You checked through your entire weapon list in the start menu? You have to equip them first before you can use them.

hmm.. that makes sense :P they do seem technologically superior in that way in the MGS universe, so understandable.

Also, you start a new game by loading your saved data. I started a new game without doing that and was confused.

thats never to hard to do.

Another thing i forgot to mention. the Metal Gear Rex VS Metal Gear Ray fight was one of the most enjoyable boss fights i've ever played. i used the bite move whenever i could just for the sake of doing it. that was fun as hell.

the fist fight at the end was a close second. the closeups when someone landed a good hit made it look like you're watching a good brawler movie.

Ya, those two fights were just.. so perfect. I think the final battle is the best battle possible for the last game in the MGS series :P or at least the last game for Solid Snake.

I doubt i'd of got through the game if I didn't know that. I didn't save it so I reloaded it and tried again and it worked :S.

lol Just making sure. ^^

when going through on Big Boss Extreme for the emblem, does Syringe count as a medical item? (cause it's kinda needed for like.. Mantis fight and such >.>)

I'm told it doesn't count but I haven't had a chance to try it. I'd assume it doesn't count just like how killing Mantis doesn't count as a kill.
