MMA

Recapping on a bit.. Japanese NYE show was pretty sick, Aoki is a beast and even though I didn't like his celebration his armlock was sick.

UFC NYE show was good, though the main event kinda killed it for me due to Rashad being gunshy, which is understandable after a knockout loss, but he better not revert to his old ways. I am becoming more and more impressed with Dos Santos and I see him as a serious threat, though Yvel did look horrible Junior still put him away with great power.

WEC was amazing, Faber and Brown both looked good and while I don't really agree with giving Faber another title shot already I can understand why since he is the WEC's biggest draw and most likely Aldo v. Faber will be on WEC's first PPV. I actually dislike Varner more which I didn't think I could and not only was his comment afterwards uncalled for, it made no sense at all since he was the one who tried to initiate the grappling...I was impressed with Benson and was happy to see him win.

UFC Fight night was good all around, I don't agree with the Lawlor v. Simpson decision but what are ya gonna do. Diaz v. Maynard sucked and I'm glad that Maynard isn't getting the next title shot because BJ would tool him bad at this point, though I expect BJ to tool Edgar too. Dunham's armbar was fucking ill and was the highlight of the card imo.

Now onto the upcoming Cards.

Strikeforce Miami

MAIN CARD

* Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis (for vacant welterweight title)
* Champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos vs. Marloes Coenen (for women's featherweight title)
* Robbie Lawler vs. Melvin Manhoef
* Bobby Lashley vs. TBA
* Greg Nagy vs. Herschel Walker*

PRELIMINARY CARD (un-aired)

* Jay Hieron vs. Joe Riggs
* Pablo Alfonso vs. Marcos da Matta*
* Sabah Homasi vs. John Kelly*
* David Gomez vs. Craig Oxley*

Very excited for most of these fights. Diaz vs. Zaromskis should be a war and will be a nice step up in competition for Zaromskis, Zaromskis is such an exciting fighter to watch and a dynamic striker so I'm pulling for him.

Manhoef is one of my favorite fighters just due to the fact that he probably has the best standup in the MW division and most likely his fights going to end in a knockout.

I feel bad for Jay Hieron since he was supposed to be getting a title shot long ago and I hope after this win they let him have it.

Many people may see Lashley as how many viewed Brock for awhile as "Just a fake Wrestler", but Lashley shows real talent and also has freak strength such as Brock. I hope to see him do well.

UFC 109

MAIN CARD

* Mark Coleman vs. Randy Couture
* Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen
* Mike Swick vs. Paulo Thiago
* Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller
* Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg

PRELIMINARY CARD (Spike TV)

* Justin Buchholz vs. Mac Danzig
* Melvin Guillard vs. Ronnys Torres

PRELIMINARY CARD (Un-aired)

* Rob Emerson vs. Phillipe Nover
* Phil Davis vs. Brian Stann
* Tim Hague vs. Chris Tuchscherer
* Rolles Gracie vs. Mostapha Al Turk

109 is a very exciting card even without a title shot. A battle of legends with Mark Coleman and Randy Couture that I've been wanting to see for years now. I'm going to go with Coleman on this one, assuming he has a competant training camp and can fix his recent cardio issues.

I hate Chael Sonnen since he thinks he is the shit for some reason after his recent win over Okami and I'm looking forward to Nate the Grate humbling him.

I'm picking Paul Thiago over Mike Swick, Maia over Miller, and Serra over Trigg. I'm also excited to see Rolles debut, though sad that Al Turk is being fed to the wolves yet again.

UFC 110

MAIN CARD

* Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez
* Michael Bisping vs. Wanderlei Silva
* George Sotiropoulos vs. Joe Stevenson
* Ryan Bader vs. Keith Jardine
* Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs. Ben Rothwell

PRELIMINARY CARD

* Chris Haseman vs. Elvis Sinosic
* Stephan Bonnar vs. Krzysztof Soszynski
* C.B. Dollaway vs. Goran Reljic*
* Brian Foster vs. Chris Lytle*
* James Te Huna vs. Igor Pokrajac*

I am very very very excited for this card. I'm glad that Big Nog was sensible this time and pulled out of the earlier date when he got staff again and though I like Cain as a young prospect I see Nog catching him in a sub. I predict Cain takes him down like most of his fights, but I think hes too green to be in there with a submission expert like Big Nog.

I'm hoping that Wandy's surgery will help him with his recent cardio problems and he is able to get back on a winning streak since he is one of my favorite fighters and no matter what he always comes to bang and put on exciting fights, plus I hate Bisping and want to see another Hendo-like knockout.

I almost wish that Cro Cop wasn't fighting anymore because it makes me sad what he has been reduced to. He doesn't have "it" anymore and I can't stand seeing him lose anymore. I'll always root for him though and I hope he pulls off the win.

I became a fan of Jardine after I read an interview of his and he seemed like a great guy, but I don't know what it is with him he is very hit or miss. He shows great talent in some fights, but others I just don't know what he is doing. Regardless I'm hoping he wins.

The LW fight I'm not really too interested in, I like Joe but after seeing what BJ did to him I'm not excited about him getting close to another title shot, hopefully with Gomi in the UFC there may be a Gomi vs Penn II, provided Gomi re-motivates himself.

WEC 47

MAIN CARD

* Champ Brian Bowles vs. Dominick Cruz (for bantamweight title)
* Joseph Benavidez vs. Miguel Torres
* Jens Pulver vs. Javier Vazquez*
* Chad Mendes vs. TBA*

Bowles should great talent in his fight with Torres and his power seems very real. I'll be rooting for him in this fight.

I was happy when I saw Torres get humbled after the fight with Bowles due to the arrogance he had going into the fight. After his loss he has reworked his camps and seems like a new fighter, he is hungry again and is taking his training very seriously. I hope for the best with him.

I don't really want to see Pulver fight anymore after his recent losses and believe hes past his prime, but if he can come back to the old ways I'll be excited to see and I'll still be rooting for him.

Thats it for now and I'll start commenting on other cards as they approach.

I got tickets to SF: Miami and I'm hella stoked to go see my first event. Bobby Lashley is a freak and that guy can really brawl, not terribly excited for the women fight since I honestly think womens mma is inferior to mens from what I've seen, sloppy technique.

I'm at work now so ill comment on more when I'm off

Damn thats sweet and yeah I really have no interest in women's MMA but w/e.

My Picks

MAIN CARD
Nick Diaz vs. Marius Zaromskis (for vacant welterweight title)

Zaromskis has danger written all over him, but if anyone can take everything of what Zaromskis will dish, its Diaz. Ive been a fan of him for quite a bit and i wont count him out, i like him here.

Champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos vs. Marloes Coenen (for women's featherweight title)

Dude vs. Chick, who gives a shit

Robbie Lawler vs. Melvin Manhoef

Lawler all the way, while both are very experienced and have fought some good competition, Manhoef loses to all of them (Hi Cheick), while Lawler has beat some at least, Ill take the younger, hungrier Lawler

Bobby Lashley vs. Wes Sims

This one does not get past the 1st round, Wes Sims is a funny dude but come on, the guy lost to a mediocre wrestler in Justin Wren via Arm Triangle, can you imagine what Lashley will do to him?

Greg Nagy vs. Herschel Walker

This one is more of a gut feeling than anything. Everyone thinks Walker is some sort of circus act freak show, but man he has been saying all the right things. He has practiced martial arts all his live, hes in good shape, hes not doing this for money or fame imo, and hell if he wants to fight, let him do it, who are we to say hes too old? I think he will impress with his cardio against a relatively small HW in Nagy

PRELIMINARY CARD (un-aired)

Jay Hieron vs. Joe Riggs

Sucks this is a prelim, but who cares!? Im going to be there live! This has FotN potential all over it, and im pullin Hieron because i want to see Diaz v Hieron.

Lets hear it Auron! Tell me why im wrong!

Edit: Dont have the slightest idea on who the rest of the Prelim fighters are, so rather not throw out guesses

I'm going to disagree with you on Diaz vs Zaromskis just because I really want to see Zaromskis win. If either fighter wins though I won't be disappointed because I expect this to be a war.

Don't really care about the women either

Melvin KO'd Mark Hunt while backpedaling with a Jab I believe. If Robbie chooses to stand he is getting knocked the fuck out. Melvin's striking is on another level.

Although Wes Sims did look terrible on TUF he did beat Frank Mir at one point in his career so it all depends who shows up to fight Lashley. That said I'm still pulling for Lashley.

Hershel Walker is a genetic freak and has put in an insane amount of work into his training so I am rooting for him and think he wins.

Also agree with Hieron against Riggs

Sims never beat Mir, he loss both times (Though one was via DQ). On the show he said he was the only man to beat Mir on 2 seperate occassions, however, he would go on to say "Wes Sims never lets the truth get in the way of a good story" lol.

sims lost to wren because he didnt take wren seriously. i dunno if he woulda won if he didnt though.

I just dont see Lashley losing to ANYONE who cant remotely match his strength, Wes Sims isnt exactly the strongest dude around. Doesnt matter how good your Jiu Jitsu is, its incredibly hard to submit a guy whos so big, so strong, and relatively good on the ground (Wrestling). Wes Sims is a small heavyweight, hes just tall, and time and time again in MMA it has proved that being an overtly tall (yet thin) fighter has been detrimental to a weightclass with bigger guys. (See Struve v. JDS/Buentello), and Kendall Grove.

Grove has excellent Jiu Jitsu and is a good fighter, but he takes a BEATING before he can submit a guy, you can only do that for so long.

My girlfriend made me a shirt to wear tonight.

It has a picture of Hendo KOing Bisping and right on top of the picture it says:

"MMAn Up"

Lawlers ko of Manhoef was siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick! I lost my voice after that one haha watching this in person rocks!

Really wasn't expecting that KO from Lawler...he was getting his ass kicked up until that right hand. I didn't think Lawler was going to be able to do much against Manhoef since Manhoef seems to be the more versatile striker (and it still seems that way) but weathering the storm until he saw the opportunity was a good gameplan. That leg is probably going to feel horrible for a week or two though haha.

Liked that Diaz fight too. Would be nice to see him against a good wrestler with decent submission defense to see if he's grown in that area since I'm pretty sure that is where most of his losses have come from.

Yeah I was very impressed with the Strikeforce card. I used to dislike the organization, but since teaming with DREAM and picking up several other good fighters (See: Henderson) I have actually enjoyed their cards and don't see them rising up as a bad thing. Give some solid competition to the UFC to step their game up as well, I'm tired of the Randy Couture cards ever other month and just shitty cards in general.

Anyone else catch 109? I think thats about the worst card I've seen in quite awhile (101 or 103 was pretty shit too, or maybe it was 102? One of those early 100 cards was pretty shit too). Out of all the fights, the only fight that went the way I wanted it to was the Couture fight, and to be honest I really didnt give a shit about that one. Maybe if he had lost they'd stop having these WTF cards, I just don't really like Coleman. And don't get me wrong, I like couture and he seems like a pretty good guy and hes still a beast fighter for his age, I just think alot of the cards he headlines usually blow. The Marquardt fight fucking blew and was pretty disappointing. I like swick alot and seeing him lose his second in a row blows as well. Didn't really care about Trigg/Serra but I think Serra is a douche and would have liked to see Trigg rock him, but Trigg didn't look that good in there. Overall just a not so great card IMO.

Atleast the UFC has some sick cards coming up. The one on the 20th should be decent, hopefully Silva/Bisping is a slug fest. Can't wait for Mir/Carwin fight next month and the Silva/Belfort and Penn/Edgar fight card in mid April. Also really looking forward to Hendo/Shield w/ strikeforce in march as well. I know Shields is pretty good on the ground and maybe I haven't seen enough of him. But the couple fights of his I have watched have been pretty boring so I hope Hendo knocks the shit out of him and makes his jump to Strikeforce not completely worthless.

Yeah I really didn't enjoy this cad. Couture v. Coleman was a terrible fight and I was sad when I saw Coleman lose, but he had a retarded gameplan. Coleman is known for his amazing double leg and GnP and he didn't even attempt to bring it to the ground. I was so fucking pissed to see Nate lose to Chael and was screaming when Nate had that tight guillotine at the end. I was pulling for Thiago and that sub was slick as fuck, Swick went out fast. I've trained at Serra's gym and hes a really nice guy and is super polite when off camera so seeing him comeback in impressive fashion after the Hughes lost is really nice. I wish he would move back down to 155 because I would rather see Penn vs Serra over Penn vs Edgar, just because I think Edgar is too small and Penn will ragdoll him.

Yea after seeing what BJ did to Diego I think Edgar needs to stop and eat about 20lbs of food and hope that BJ does the same thing. I don't care for BJ but he's the best in that wieght and deserves the credit. I will be rooting for someone to take him out everytime, but I just don't know Edgar atm.

Did even mention anything about Nate . . Auron that was nasty and unexpected he was close to another shot at the title, but good to know that it would have just been another repeat of what happened last time :P

Serra and BJ have fought before and that fight was pretty entertaining. I think the problem with Serra is he just doesnt feel comfortable at 155 anymore due to his age, and having to cut weight and diet harder leaves him more drained. At the same time hes too short to legitimately compete at 170. Ive never been a fan of Trigg and ive thought he was highly overrated, what is he 2-5 in the UFC? I get hes competed against top competition but whatever.

UFC 109: Decisioness was pretty meh, Sonnen looked sort of impressive, he seems like that really annoying type of figher that might not be stronger/faster/technical than you, but so gritty and frustrating that it takes you out of your element which was clearly the case.

Havent been a fan of swick either, i dont think hes that good of a fighter.

How about Rolles Gracie? Holy crap performance set the Gracies back decades. That was one of the worst (top 5) gassing performances ive ever seen.

Also, i dont know why people are thinking Couture is moving into the title picture, I really think he will get smahed by the top tier heavyweights unless they keep trying to match him up with favorable styles. Id like to see him fight Griffin, Rashad (I think rampage will destroy Couture), Maybe Bones or Lil Nog before i consider him a contender
