Monk. Bandwagon Job of 2006

The first job I played when I got this game on PS2 release was MNK. I think I postponed leveling it like, 4 times (quit, if you will) due to seeking for a month without an invite (got a few uninvites though). Now, I know some people try to stick it out longer, but I just don't have that kind of time. So I started leveling WAR 'cuz I remembered it being pretty fun (was 25) and I wanted to get the (at the time) new Eisenplatte set.

I remember always thinking the same thing whenever I take up a job I didn't think a lot of people were playing. "Jeez, now that I'm playing this job there seem to be a lot more people." Naturally, I thought I was just being paranoid, though I suppose it turned out everyone else WAS leveling WAR. =P

Anyway, last time I "quit" MNK was at 59, then my girlfriend (Mishaela) was leveling her BST around 60 so I decided to come join her with MNK to keep her company. So in that duo my MNK hit 60, and I realized that now I can finally get some faster parties since I can use Howling Fist (had to get the WS in my next real party, of course). Well, as I started leveling (and doing some off and on Brenner) I remembered why I played MNK to begin with. Punching crap like a madman and countering every friggin' hit that came my way. Of course, I learned the hard way not to use Counterstance in Brenner (SAM hit me with Sidewinder for like, 1k.) So does that make me a bandwagon MNK?

Speaking of gear, where's the monk JSE? Darks have that plastron set, pld's have a few sets . . . is Rasetsu gear supposed to cover this?

I'd always wondered that myself, actually. I mean, NIN and SAM have JSE on top of Rasetsu gear, so why is it MNK is litterally the only job with no JSE for 70/71?

Yeah, they're not always correct, but saying that they're always wrong and just show that the owner is the best is completely wrong. He's implying that anyone who parses anything is lying which isn't the case.
Are you slackin on your pills or something? Sheeesh kitty go read my post again i said "Aren't always right" and DID NOT Say "Are always wrong".See the difference? don't sweat ur self too much by trying to figure out what i'm "implying".I have a good experience with parsers and it goes back to WoW.If you forget to reset some stuff it always shows the owner at first. And i don't usually buy parser results unless all party has parser either.
ANd to the out parsing me part.... lawl@ mithra monk.K now you and blackchaosactionpokemonterminator can thank each other for some more posts!.

I always loved Monk for certain reasons (especially like the AF) - I would've gone Monk myself, but since Klank already had the job going, I didn't feel the real urge to take the same path...I sortof enjoy playing support roles more anyways, so..

Sorry, couldn't read any further than this... big ol' LOL at you Mr. Ignorant Uninformed (his IRL name for anyone that didn't know) :)

...so in short you're saying that parsers are always wrong unless they're your parser. Look, anyone who knows anything about how to work Spyle's parser knows that you just need to restart the parse before each party. That's all it takes. And if you forget to do that, you can edit and recalculate after. It's not hard to do. The most mistakes I've had are the parser not counting a small portion of my own damage and instead having bits of damage done by players named "countered by Ikari. The Spartoi Warrior takes" and "b."

And the only, I repeat, only people that outparse me are Axe/Ridill WARs, and better MNKs. Not just from my parser, but from other people in the party. And I'm a mithra too. Get used to it, MNK/WAR with the right gear is hideously powerful, which is why it's a bandwagon job. WAR/NIN is more popular bandwagon only because it gets Utsusemi. That's the balance between the two. MNK/WAR does more damage, and takes more. WAR/NIN does less damage, and takes less. Unless, again, said WAR/NIN has a Ridill. K-club is way overrated, and is suicide against mobs with real TP moves (Smite of Rage doesn't count).

Oh, and as to WAR's effectiveness end-game... WAR/SAM or WAR/THF with a Great Axe. Closes Darkness like a DRK. But since a lot of people are stupid and don't want to do skillchains and just BLM/SMN/MNK(/BLU?) zerg everything, they don't see a job that does skillchains as worth anything.

I think WSM was saying you can't trust everyone 100% and the only person you can entirely trust is yourself. Not every situation is perfect and not everyone fits into a cookie cutter scenario. Not to mention what he says about parsers is true. They are only as accurate as the person using them. A parser does not tell you how many times a person DC'ed, how many times they went afk, how many times they died, or anything else relevant besides the damage/acc output. Does the person parsing that info always include it? No. They don't always directly state everything and you may or may not be privy to the whole truth. There is a reason scientists test theories that have been "proven". They do that because some people falsify facts/data (Hwang Woo-suk). I'm not saying never trust a parser or the person parsing, but at the very least you should question it's validity and see for the truth for yourself.

Apparently you're the one who took the stupid pills. It's not hard to figure out what you're implying when you're only just short of outright saying it. You're experience with parsers goes back to WoW, that's hardly impressive, since there's been parsers for long before WoW was created. Your experience with parsers is pretty much irrelevant too. I've been using a parser for a long time and I am well aware that they occasionally miss something; but your rhetoric in your previous post implies that they're wrong alot or they're skewed so that the owner of the parser is always the one on top. Sounds like you just can't accept when people school you in damage and they have the proof to back it up.

A parser is the only way to legitmately and sanely measure game statistics. Yeah, you could just count your chat logs and figure all of the information out, but that would take forever and there'd be a decent margin of error in your counting. The program that does it for you isn't perfect, but it doesn't have to be, there's only a small margin of error so parser results are perfectly fine.

I'll take the challenge, let's go pit my monk against your war. Have some 3rd party member running a parser so that way you won't whine when I beat you. He'll let's have Ikari there too so you can get beat by TWO mithra monks, to further the humiliation.

The only thing that's relevant to the parser, the whole reason for even running the parser, is the damage output; so all of this superfluous information doesn't really effect the results. If someone's dead or disconnected or afk, you don't normally start a fight so the fact that they can't participate rarely comes up. Even if they did fight without the other person, those missed fights ARE shown in the parser data. There is a counter for the number of fights that party member has participated in, if they don't do anything they don't get credit; so the data is there.

Any discrepancies of participation are completely nullified by the simple fact that nobody gives a damn about the total damage each person deals. In my last party, I had two WARs that were parsing almost exactly equal... 25.46% and 25.76% of each fight's damage, or so. WAR A disconnected for about 10 fights. At the end of the parse, 180 battles or so, those two WARs were at 25.36 and 25.87%. I dont' remember the exact numbers, but those are very close. WAR B had several thousand total damage more than WAR A, but the numbers were very close, because it's the percent-damage-per-fight that matters. My numbers were skewed too, because I cheated with Hundred Fists towards the end, giving me a bunch extra total damage. But my per-fight damage didn't move even .1%.

Moral of the story: Large samples = somebody needs to DIE, and I mean IRL, to throw off the parser to any large degree.

Of course a parser will be slightly in someone's favor, because you can't garuntee the log will contain every hit done by other people. But it'll be damn close. And as for the argument of "well they could just pull some bullshit numbers out of their ass and post those"... well, those are bullshit numbers. Posting a parser file, on the other hand, is as close to fact as you can get. There's no fuckin' way somebody's going to recreate the volumes of data that a parser file has, all for the sake of making their e-wang feel bigger, and if somehow they do, it's gonna be obvious.

November 2003 is when i began MNK. Took it to level 24 and stopped cuz I thought it sucked.

I leveled pally to level 62, and then I took a JP monk in my party and for the first time, i saw kick attacks. I quit pally and went MNK to 75.

Leveling MNK at 32 I saw another MNK in Crawlers nest poping those Rolanberry thingamabobbers and witnessed Asuran Fists for the first time. I was in awe.

I did monk because of kick attacks and loved the job because of Asuran Fists. I want to level DRG to 37 so I can punch, kick, and jump. I think that's something not to laugh about cuz i think the coolness factor just kicks butt. I didn't even know anything about chi-blasts or any of the sort.

I just think it's just one of the funnest jobs to play in the game. I do think DRKs and SAMs look pretty cool too cuz they have all the nice looking armor. Pally armor is quite nice as well.

I just wish that at end-game, we could better distinguish ourselves from other melee. It seems we all have an osode, shura togi, or AF2.

Other melee have much nicer pieces of armor ><

Bandwagon job? Maybe. We do suck until level 60, and yes we suffer because of the inability to complete distortion. The level grind is hard from 1-60, though I'm not sure how it is now. I don't really know if you can really call it a bandwagon job because of the amount of time you have to put into it to play it (i.e. armor, weapons, gil, low-invite % from level 1-60). In my opinion I would say MNK have the reputation from 1-60 that DRG have 55+. If that's changed, I'm not sure.

WoW lol how can you tell what i was implying? can you read my mind?.Learn now to jump at peoples ***s.If you don't like an opinion post a response worth reading instead of trying to figure out what someone is implying n what he actually says

"War/nin is more popular job because it gets utsusemi" ... lol.Hello? Any job can get utsusemi if you sub ninja. But yea nin sub goes the best with war because you get berserk aggressor n on top of that you get an extra swing on rampage + the duel wield speed without the tp nerf. And if i'm correct the tp nerf did hit monks unlike war last patch - or atleast thats what i heard
Only warrior gets to use a weapon with 30 attack 3 str and main hand something with 18 attack 10 accuracy. If i remember correct most relic weapons have 20 attack... so thats some huge stats right there. On top of that warrior also has a B+ in club and around the same rating in multi hit weapons which makes it easy to do more dmg on ws with a heavy main hander and have a multi hit weapon in offhand. Can you out dmg a warrior? yes you can.Can you out dmg me? maybe.... can you out dmg a decked out warrior with your decked out monk? No because warrior is the ultimate DD if u give it one of the best gear available for the job.It would have the most accuracy on gear given how you equip it.
And no i'm not really willing to accept someone else's parser's result unless i have my own thing running in the back too.People had parsers all over in WoW but to my knowledge the FFXi parser stuff is not such user friendly (Atleast wasn't when i last checked it).Reason i don't plan to get into it anytime soon
Also note that people using parsers are usually more careful about their dmg compared to a ordinary FFXI player.Like in a situation where a mob needs to die fast to keep chain, they might not ws it because it has like 400 hp left.On the other hand someone else might n right there ! he would go down in the parser chart.

Okay, if you're NOT implying what I said you were... what were you implying? Because that's the only conclusion I could see.

And as to WAR/NIN's popularity due to utsusemi... You stated exactly why I said that. And unlike other jobs that LOSE damage by subbing NIN, WAR GAINS damage. So no, not just any job can sub NIN for utsusemi if they want to keep their damage.

Let me tell you something WSM, two little words that keep MNK ahead of all other melee jobs. Black Belt. There is nothing in the entire game that can outdamage a fully pimped out MNK with Black Belt. Yes, a Ridill WAR can outdamage a MNK with Black Belt, but that's a pretty horribly equipped MNK otherwise.

If you think the parser isn't user friendly... you've apparently never used it.

http://www.frontiernet.net/~Spyle/FFXI/ffxi.html

Download the latest parser.

Install it.

Run it.

Click Okay to the popup to start the program.

File -> Gather/Parse Logs to Date

And it's running.

If you can't understand that, well, it ain't the parser's fault, lemme tell you.

And as for being more careful about my damage... That's what you're supposed to be doing anyway. If you've got a WS that can do 1.1k damage, why waste it on something with 400 HP left when one melee round from your party will kill it? And if it won't go down in that one melee round, well, the person running the parser is just plain stupid for not WS'ing it.

Even with blackbelt i think ur str won't reach an elvaan mnk's str? or maybe it would.Hey! ur comparing classes so i'm just comparing races no offense.
I don't understand what you mean, but i'll try to figure out what you were "Implying".You said a monk with a blackbelt would out dmg everything n then u said it wouldn't..... n thats a horrible monk otherwise. What the taco does that mean?.If you are giving monk its Black Belt (Best mnk item but relatively easy to acquire) then you better not be missing out ridill and all that adaman set stuff. With all those double and triple attacks the blackbelt is going to look like a toy.Add a defending ring in the ring slot n hey i'm taking less dmg than the freakin pld ><.... its army of one right hur

Anyone who sacrifices an exp chain to make themselves look better on a parser is an idiot; I don't know who you hang out with who does that but let me know so I don't have to party with them. Plus, if they use a single-hit weaponskill, they still get the added damage from using a weaponskill but also don't have to worry about the mob dying before all hits connect.

Even if I give your opinion that war > all in terms of DD some credence(note: I don't) that would only work if the war had literally the best possible gear, until then the monk would own them by your own logic. Ridill, Armada hauberk, whatever the hell else war's use that makes them uber. The thing is, that most of the gear that a WAR would use:

neck(spike/chivalrous/PCC)
back(Forager)
rings(flame/triumph/rajas)
earings(triumph/brutal)
throw(sachet depending on race)
legs(byakko)
head(turban probably)
feet(depending on race)
hands(gigas bracelett only otherwise, mnk > war easily)

monk can wear all of those as well as war. The only difference would come from body, weapon definitely. Even then, monk still has a black belt and would be using destroyers; and that 6% extra critical chance would be huge in terms of damage. So please show me how war would easily outclass a monk.

So now it's not that war > mnk, but that elvaan war > mithra monk, good job changing your position when there's some evidence thrown in your face. Black belt is not an easy thing to obtain, ridil and adaman hauberk are drops off of 1 mob, while black belt requires drops off of 3. That, and you have to do 2 quests before you can even get the black belt. A monk can get up to 30% haste in gear alone, while war is stuck with what, 20%? 10% haste would make a big difference in terms of DoT.

You're ignorance is laughable.Blackbelt has 5 more str and about 12 more haste than warewolf belt right ? you know that ridill hits for double attack about 50 percent of the time and triple attack for 25 percent of the time (According to this guy on KI) for the nice dmg it has on itself right? the double n triple attacks n the tp gain alone would blow the belt out of the water in matter of secs.Destroyers are 6 percent crit but so is the rampager axe from the same bcnm - which you can main hand and rampage. But hey then again you can use juggernaut for a whopping 30 attack! (10 more than a relic weapon) and 3 str.And body pieces make alot more difference than you think they do.10 accuracy and 20 attack is not gonna hold much of a resistance to 10 str 10 dex and 15 accuracy 15 attack.ANd i think i'd rather go with accuracy 4 and attack 10 on the armada mufflers than facing the dex penalty. And no Elvaan wars atleast don't use the job specific feet.Go with the adaman feet or the unicorn feet with 3 str 3 haste. Not to mention we can switch to the hetacomb set n get tons of str /dex n ws too =/

Ridill is like 1/40 drop rate on Fafnir and for the body u gotta kill a hard dragon. On the other hand you can get the blackbelt items from BCNM.And the quests before it are not hard -reason there are tons of NAs with quested brown belts. And what's the good use of haste when you're going to hit like a sissy

Can we actually a warrior with a ridil to comment on this? WSM is just going off of his intellect(lol) but I'd like to see someone with experience say something.

12% haste is a huge amount to have on a melee, it's practically broken to have in just one slot. You apparently don't get haste very often or don't have any +haste gear to know the effect that it has on your DoT.

As for you bringing up the Rampager, that's 6% crit chance on that weapon only, whereas destroyers could technically be 12% since that bonus applies to both fists. As for hands, Melee gloves(+16), Ochuido's kote(+20) and Bandomusha kote(+22) all beat out your adaman gloves; as I said, so war's behind in the hands department.

Ok, you've lost any shred of credibility you once had with this sentance alone. You're ignoring the whole basis of what a monk is, and just being an idiot to boot. Actually get some of the gear and then you can talk trash, but until then, this mithra monk will continue to own you in damage.

WSM... I give up.

You've obviously never paid attention while partying with a MNK, and apparently you're completely ignoring that you can kill Fafnir 40 times in the time it takes to get 297 Kindred Seals. And that's assuming you're lucky and all three drop first try. More likely it'll be 2 or 3 tries per KS99, and that's a -lot- of seals.

And to further that ignorance, you say MNK hits like a sissy. Here's some parser numbers. Which of course you'll completely ignore, but I'm putting them out so the rest of QCDN can see how wrong you are.

Johnnyb (Elvaan WAR/NIN) was missing some gear I'd consider important (decent offhand axe), but was using 3 or 4 of the Adaman peices you speak so highly of, including Adaberk. Artem (Hume WAR/NIN) was using Kirin's Osode and offhanding Joyeuse. Tymon was being his lovable gimp self. :p

As you can see, Johnnyb hit harder than me (M Avg), as would be expected of an Adaberk. I also had a lower average on weapon skills (Sk Avg). However, I had crit rate boost from Destroyers, and I hit faster. And it's that attack speed that put me ahead of him. Attack speed that would be even further boosted by a Black Belt. Also, the parser doesn't seem to include Counters anywhere, which means I'm missing 300-ish damage per fight from that. We were all eating sushi, hence the similar hit rates.

I've got a parse in here -somewhere- of a Ridill WAR outparsing me by a good amount. I know what they're like, they're absolute beasts... but they're not untouchable.

Anyone who sacrifices an exp chain to make themselves look better on a parser is an idiot
I'm sorry I just had to comment on this. Every WAR DRK MNK and DRG that I've ever partied with pisses me off. Sure there are some that will do a stun WS to get a good SC and MB. Those are the minority though. The ones that really piss me off though are the ones that don't even care about SCs and just do the most damaging WS every 100% TP. Then the BLM goes to waste, the fights last longer because WS don't always do the max DMG, and the tank and healer have to be up that much longer while the BLM does low DMG nukes and the melee just swing away.

If the SC you need to get a nice burst on a mob calls for you to do a stun WS, then freaking do it and shut the fuck up about how much DMG whatever uber WS you have does. That is all.
