This has been the problem with my numerous previous 360's. The way I've experienced it was as follows:
If your xbox encounters this problem within the warranty, you will have it repaired without the "send away charge", but will get NO warranty extension.
If your xbox encounters this problem outside the warranty, you will have it repaired ONLY if you sent it away, paying the rather substantial charge that comes with it (£60 here), but you get an extended warranty.
This fits in with what someone else said (I think Tag) about the payment actually covering the repair and the new warranty. Or, in another way, "Your machine broke outside your warranty, we'll fix it, but only if you pay us for fixing it, and we'll toss in another warranty because you just KNOW it's going to happen again.
That's how it works here in the UK, I'm unsure whether or not it's different elsewhere. Solution? Get a RRoD =/
