I guess I'd say I can understand how someone could hate this game, but yeah, I kind of love it.
I think all those times seeking party during FFXI, I told myself I really just wish I could go out and kill shit. I always loved the game play but man oh man the downtime. This is really a great compromise.
FFXI is very uncompromising. For example the job system. Classes are specialists. You succeed by working together with a good mix of specialties. The result is you can't work alone, and you can't work with everybody. Here you can learn different skills from different areas, but everyone can learn everything. The result is that you can solo, but there's less tactical cooperation most of the time. It also means I can work with whatever 3 random people happen to want to group up instead of having to wait for the right group of people. Also because quests are set to specific times, people are constantly rolling in and out of the grouping areas.
I like the voice chat too. People seem to be actually using it, and it means you can communicate without having to stop.
As for the story, I'm not far into it but I don't think it's bad like a lot of you are saying. Maybe my opinion will change as I advance. I think it's pretty standard fare for a JRPG. Save the princess, save the world, full of cliches, yadda yadda. It's nice having that merged into good gameplay that feels both nostalgic and MODERNIZED. This is the direction I want RPGs to head, more action oriented like this and Demon Soul. I got bored playing through Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey.
Right now the only thing that could beat Demon Souls and WKC for me is if the next Tales game decided to break formula a bit and combine it's speed and gameplay and stuck it into an engine like WKC uses.
Like I said though, I can understand differing opinions. I've just been playing Demon Souls and Wipeout HD. Being challenged is great and WKC isn't exactly challenging, at least the single player. Me though, I have much less time to play games than I'd like. So I want to make lots of progress every time I sit down and have 3 hours to play. Osyris I suggest you play Demon Soul. It's subjectively the better game, and it's the only RPG I've ever considered challenging. This game though, is a bit more fun, because it lets me relax a little.
