QCDN's future without a Flameboard

Which will result in the ban of both when it comes down to it.

You guys need to get out of my thread before I lose patience. This is about the QCDN FB, not about QCDN vs. Pere.

Bingo
*edit*
Not bingo >.< I doubt any of this would go on ad nauseum if there weren't a flameboard.

If we are all for "improving the quality," then charge for membership and watch the quality skyrocket. I belong to 3-5 pay sites and they are probably the sites worth visiting most of the day.
I don't want to make QCDN a membership only site. I don't see that it provides enough content to warrant a mandatory subscription fee. Most pay sites rely on their membership contributing content the membership is paying to access. Often that results in 749406306436428 people posting "someone post something useful!" and the guy who runs the site counting his 49493629 * $20/year.

I am considering to add another subscription level (maybe like $4.99/year) and limit access to the AH and the ES to those who are subscribed at that level. For now that's just a thought though.

Anyway, I am for improving quality, not everyone is though. Many of those who are, are also not willing to put in effort to improve QCDN for those who are not, and who could blame them? I certainly don't.
See: QCDN [How-To] tutorials wanted - a simple request, not much work would have to go into it, 30 minutes per tut tops, yet there are none. Considering that, I just don't see how a mandatory membership would produce enough content to warrant a membership fee.

My goal used to be to increase traffic, and user count, and whatnot. This has changed. I would rather have 100 users who get along and engage in forum activity for mutual benefit, than 10,000 users who turn QCDN into zero information content a la offtopic.com and like.

There is another angle to this that is worth mentioning. The FB produces significant traffic, thus consuming considerable server resources (memory, anyone?), while producing very little content. In addition those who are FB campers, are most all of the time those who do not financially contribute to running this service. To sum this up, resources are consumed, but no reasonable offset is provided (either content worth reading, or financial contributions). While I didn't have that in mind when I first brought the question up, it was pointed out to me by PM, and I couldn't escape the logic, thus here it is.

Well Sculli - a quick way of fixing the Flameboard. Add FB to that $4.99 subscription fee.

People that normally would post would need a real good reason to warrant a subscription - AND the people that pay, are paying you to moderate THEIR invalid FB posts. ^-^

Well what about adding the FB to the subscription that you mention?

I would love it if you stole SA's avatar $$$ system though .

Great minds think alike!

this is an example of what would happen without a flameboard. things in general discussion COULD be flamed. if you have seen the blue gartr forums, you would see that they have 2 sections for ffxi and one for crafting in ffxi. both of the sections get flamed constantly because its free reign. there is no segregated area for flames

Rules or no, flames would spill into the other sections without somewhere else to be. You cant just make the stupid people go away (the people who get flamed, ect)
Sure you can expose a scammer or a retarded player without using offencive words or "flaming" them, but it never comes across right.

QCDN doesnt cause the drama in the game, its just a reflection of it.

That seems to be the predominant problem at hand. However, if the rules are enforced - wouldn't this seemingly become an information center as it is intended to be, and NOT a internet pissing contest? I am not saying people won't get mad at other people, especially when perspectives vary as widely as they do over the generalized internet. When people post, they need to be very careful to ensure their post is not to be taken the wrong way. In the same breath, people reading posts need to do so objectively and not jump to conclusions.

I would love to see some of what Sculli wants for this site implemented. The only problem with that is, I don't see any kinda request for this information. I don't know what he wants contributed to this site. All I see would be the QCDN of old with a few new rules. IE... I see no guides/walkthroughs section (because these needs are met by other sites like alla, somepage, and various other places), no significant exp area lists per level or anything. THis information could all be here, but I have no idea what to supply and I certainly don't want to waste my time.

Stop bringing up other forums which have horrible modding and admining... I would like to think that QCDN has some of the best maintenance around and could handle life without a flameboard.

Well, we do finally have an admin a bit more active than Pupusa - course that doesn't say much considering how long this site ran rampant.

Ideally I'd like to think it is possible.

re: requesting info
It is difficult, if not impossible, to compete with FFXI content sites. Places like alla or somepage simply have vastly superior resources when it comes to information collection.

However, that doesn't mean that there is no reason to come up with your own AF guide (for example). It could be well illustrated with screenshots or something. It could be an accout of one's experience, rather than a how-to it could be a how-I-did-it. The purpose of writing it could be simply to practice writing, and hope that someone will find it useful, without that anyone specifically requested the info.

I personally do not want to request game related info because I have very little understanding as to what aspects could be important to others at this time. I have not seriously played FFXI in a long time, and I am simply out of touch. I think that considering the X360 release, a solid noob guide would be very helpful. One that goes beyond from 1-5 go here, then from 5-10 there, get to 15 and hit the Dunes. One that includes details that are useful to noobs. Perhaps talking about where to acquire maps, where to look up quest info, which quests are worth doing as noob because they result in useful gear, whether to pick up a craft early on, which mobs link and which don't, etc. I mean there are lots of things out there that will save noobs from certain frequent death, will put a little coin in their pocket, and will enrich their game experience.

I am going to take this as a compliment, even though it could easily be read otherwise.

Heh, if someone writes a worthy guide and is approved by peers, give the author a free year and a fancy title. There's your carrot.

I'm not sure people even think of QCDN as an information resource. QCDN is like FFXI's largest linkshell. QCDN to me is a purely social website. QCDN gives players on the Quetzalcoatl server two means of acquiring a good reputation - two ways to get noticed and stand out from the hoard. It's created server celebrities like Sabia, Cubswoo, Asiamise, and server villains that it wouldn't be right to name here and throw the thread off track. If we accept QCDN for what it is, and try to enhance the reasons people visit and enjoy the site, it'll be much easier and more effective than trying to become another information depot like Allakazham, where the combined community IQ barely matches that of a loaf of bread. FFXI websites are like FFXI jobs. Each should cater to their strengths for optimal results. Trying to be well rounded tends to make a website mediocre. Take a look at what makes people enjoy QCDN and optimize it.

God forbid people have opinions or express them; I really wouldn't want to be associated with people who discriminate based on the fact that you participate in an online forum for a game they play. I'd be surprised if you're allowed to talk in the LS, for fear of expressing a dissenting opinion.
I'm sorry but this just made me laugh. You really have no ground under your feet to make a statment like that. Considering that everytime someone says something different than how you think something should be done, you have some dumbass remark to make and about how they are an idiot.

The difference is that, Baja is talking about LS leadership, while you're talking about a single member of a fourm.
If Sculli walked around calling people morons for posting stuff, then it'd be the same.

Well, how can you consider this place an information source when everytime someone tries to come up with an idea, there are forces that scream and yell how people are lazy, worthless and noobs for not doing it themselves. I look to the ToD thread, the crafting advice requests, the stale and repeated places to level and why someone is an idiot for not using the socially accepted "uber" sub/gear for thier job. I look to my days in DAoC when people would actually stop and give you advice and unless there was a big RvR match going on, wander all over the face of the realm with you doing quests, missions, getting supplies. That just seems to be the way this game is though. It's a shame I like playing it so much.

Asking for someone to simply hand you a ToD is being lazy. You're taking away from the work that they did to get said ToD.
The crafting, most crafters are willing to make a synth for you. The ones that get shot down are the "Make me an HQ prz" people who want a HQ, but dont want to pay full price for it, or assume any risks.
subjob/gear. If you dont want to play to your full potential, then we dont want to play with YOU. Different subjobs for different occasions. And i'm sorry, Warrior/Whitemage wont ever be a good party member for exp.

DAoC didnt require half the effort that FFXI needs. People who simply have everything handed to them in FFXI tend to be useless, unable to deal with what it takes to play. You'll find tons of people willing to help on missions and quests, they're all over this board. Just dont be a stubborn idiot and maybe it'll be easier.

Did you even play DAoC? It is almost the same game as FFXI. FFXI just looks a little better and has different names for things. Didn't require half the effort. Please.

Even right there, in your last post to counter what I said, elitism ensues. Thus proving what I said right about why this site isn't looked at as more than and entertaining read.
